Here we go. Maybe being the very first person to get an 8460w wasn't a good idea.

Turned on laptop this morning, external mouse not functioning (it was plugged into USB3) Tried ext usb3 hdd computer locked up hard, couldn't use keyboard or touchpad, had to power off.

USB3 Controller in Device Mgr, yellow ! (device cannot start)

Rebooted a few times, same thing. BIOS wont get past HP logo with anything plugged into USB3.

Attempted to reload USB3 drivers from HP's website, computer blue screened.

Rebooted some more, USB3 controller is now gone from device mgr.

Pretty much seems like USB3 controller is burnt out. Off to call HP tech support! F*ck!!!! I just got this thing!

Update: India says the USB3 controller is a separate module that can be replaced instead of the entire motherboard. He is sending it along to an onsite service tech. We'll see what happens....

this was (and still is) an issue with the 8x40w's that have usb 3 as well.

there is no support pre windows for anything plugged into them.

in your case, it does look like you have a board failiure.
