    EliteBook Mobile Workstation - Laptops

Just ordered my 8460w: 2.2 quad core, 8gb ram. Should be a nice fast machine in a relatively small package.

FYI, the discount code CTO8460w didn't work online so I called into a sales rep who put the code in manually to get me a 25% discount.

Doesn't look the backlit keyboards come on any of the models listed - even the $3,499 8760W. Anyone know how long it usually takes before custom ordering is available?

Forget the code, you'll do better calling it in or calling/emailing a rep who has given good discounts to other forum members. Last generation the best discounts given were 28% (assuming no extra discounts for delays/problems/inside connections).

Is this the correct URL for configurable 8760w? I just got it by tinkering...I'm trying to shop an 8760W against an M6600 and the listed (custom config) price is favoring the Dell by ~$600 (w/o dreamcolor).

I configured a 8560w to as close specs as the M4600 I ordered and with 28% off, it comes out to almost the same as price I paid Dell after discounts.

hmm, too bad no preconfig has ATI+DreamColor+2720QM, and customizing it increases the price drastically.

I'm still thinking I'll wait for Ivy Bridge. I also hope HP will consider putting a 3D display in the workstation one, by then. Why have a GPU that supports quad-buffered stereo, and not offer a stereo-capable display?

I too, am also very interested in locating a reliable sales representative. Or is getting the 28% discount as simple as calling 866-625-0242?

One more question, are you guys using the discount on configured notebooks only? I'm a student and it'd be very nice for me to use the discount on a cheaper, preconfigured notebook.

Unfortunately, that is only a dual core (i7 2630 QM), not a quad. Also, as a pre-configured, there is no way to upgrade the CPU. Or get an SSD. Or Broadband. OK, you can upgrade to SSD fairly easily, but the CPU and no broadband option is a deal-killer for me. Screen is right. 8 GB of ram is right. But CPU is not.

The 2630QM is a quad. It's a bit confusing because Intel also sells the 2620M which is dual-core, but you can always tell by the "Q".

As stated above, QM = quad core. Also, it's very easy and typically substantially cheaper to upgrade the memory, broadband, SSD, or CPU (in that order) for most systems. Unless you really need a high end CPU, you won't notice much difference between the quads (except lack of virtualization support).

Well, so it is. I stand duly corrected. I had not seen the *30QM promoted before, only the *20M. I've been educated today, so thank you, gents.

Now, as to solving the broadband vacancy, won't that require some fairly major surgery to install wiring inside the top/frame/display area?? Or can that be taken care of more simply?

No problem. Debating whether to order this and cancel my Lenovo x220 order. I know they don't sound very similar, but for me the attraction is a great screen on a laptop.

not in any of the German distributor TopConfig portals.

Ingram and Actebis started listing the LW924AW#ABD (8560W CI5-2540M 4GB 320GB 15.6HD+ W7P-64 BR-COMBO WL BT) yesterday, but no ETA and no other models listed sofar.

I actually purchased an x220 for the same reason (fantastic screen). The IPS screen really is fantastic on the x220.

However, I ended up returning the x220 because of heat/noise problems and the fact that it didn't perform well in games (in many cases it was worse than the Radeon 3470 in my old T400, which is considerably slower than the HD Graphics 3000 according to 3DMark). The clickpad also sucks.

4G/NGMN? interesting of course. Here in Germany (Metro-Area Hamburg a good 3G) is still not available everywhere... and even worse when getting into rural areas. So 4G is nice, but quite a while away over here.
