One simple question- can I connect 2 monitors on this notebook- 1 on VGA and 1 on HDMI...

yes should do. you can use a HDMI->DVI cable to run a DVI monitor with no problems.

    Yes and no.

It will not work with 8510p, since it's graphics card does not support more than 2 outputs. Two externals are okay but no internal display at the same time.

It would work with some newer models if they are equipped with newest ATI VGA cards that have the Eyefinity feature (among other things, Eyefinity means you can have three monitors at the same time). Good examples are Envy 17 and Asus G73 gaming laptops.

Can do a $114 DIY ViDock using a HD5450 + 12V AC adapter. Connects up using your expresscard slot.

    $65-shipped PE4L+EC2C
    $40-HD5450
    $9 12V/72W AC adapter

Can even add a third monitor if get a displayport to DVI adapter. Eyefinity supported on HD54xx or newer cards.

There's USB 2.0 DisplayLink solutions as well, but don't expect any decent framerates even for basic web browsing.

There is no expresscard slot in 8510-series, only pcmcia. Unless 8510p is a lot more different from my 8510w than I know.

Just did a quick search. Seems neither 8510P nor 8510w has an expresscard slot. Only way to get one is by puchasing the Advanced Dock.

Other alternative is to do a mPCIe-based DIY ViDock. I do that on my 2510P. Means having a mini HDMI cable protruding out of your system. Would need a USB dongle to provide concurrent wifi use.

When Vidock was released, I did some searching and found this:
ViDock Gfx: High Performance Dual Display Notebook Expansion

In the bottom it says 8510w not compatible even with adv. dock that I have. However I don't know the reason why it doesn't work or if the diy solution would be better compatibility-wise.

Villagetronic would have listed their Vidock2 as incompatible due them seeing the error12: cannot allocate resources issue. That is something that is resolved by the DIY ViDock Setup 1.x software. So yes, you could do a expresscard implementation via the Advanced Dock, or use the wifi mPCIe slot. The latter only possible with the DIY solution.
