Assuming your 8530w has nVIDIA graphics, when you use a HDMI cable the GPU core runs at full clock and it seems that it's too much. Could you download HWMonitor and check CPU GPU and HDD temps when this happens? (you could post a screenshot)

Thank you for the reply, namaiki.

I have not check GPU/HDD temperature yet but the only way to avoid the freezing is to lift the bottom of the notebook up and allow ample space under the vents. If I were to let the laptop sit on the desk or use the external battery that semi blocks the vent then the freezing is unavoidable.

I'll do that tonight. I also have a 8730w with HDMI but with Radeon and this does not occur. It could be there is slightly more room for circulation in the 8730w. I've updated the bios, drivers etc....

Does anyone else have this issue? I wonder if this is common in the 8530w and if HP has a solution since mine is still under warranty.

How is the CPU/GPU heatsink, has it been cleaned? Also thermal paste could be replaced for greater effect. Those could keep it under the critical temp.

However, since it's still covered by warranty... I'd contact HP for service :)

    KLF,

Fan is clean, already sprayed with 100 PSI air gun, no dust visible. I have not removed the bay to access the CPU yet (anyone have good instructions).

I found instructions and will reapply the thermal grease. On this same forum, I read someone reapplied the heatsink with fresh thermal paste and lowered the GPU by 4C and CPU by 1C. This is quite an improvement.

    idling temperatures with WIFI on:

    8530W T9400 CPU: 42C, NVIDIA 770M: 52C
    8730W T9600 CPU: 33C, Radeon 3670: 43C

    Hm..quite a difference.

Those tempsare completly fine, and even quite good. What are the temps when it is hooked up to hdmi and seems to be overheating?
