Ok that's a lot of information haha... I'll see if I can address it in this post
I am somewhat amazed that HP improves an "old" (4/5 years is ancient for laptops) laptop by removing the whitelist...
TBH I think the Centrino Ultimate 6300 still is a very good WiFi adapter. It has 3 antenna's.
About the GPU, for DreamColor the HP card might work, can't exactly remember right now. But basically the card needs to have a BIOS chip. Some HP cards are ROMless (no BIOS) but that's mostly AMD from what I've seen.
If the card works correctly (unlike mine) then blind flashing is not difficult to do. Before replacing the card, just make sure you have the BIOS setup to boot to the USB key, and also you can prepare an autoexec.bat file so everything is done automatically for you. Then replace the card, and let it do it's thing. After that it should all work correctly.
Yes I think that is correct. So depending on the card flashing is not necessary. I don't have a DC panel so I didn't research in depth. DC is 50 pin LVDS instead of regular 40 pin LVDS.
I like the power of the EliteBook, but personally I prefer a less powerful but lighter laptop.
A good desktop PC is still unbeatable.
Regarding temps, the heatsink is not really that good on these laptops, because indeed HP is greedy. So repaste might help a little bit but those numbers are already quite good.

Since my ebay order was cancelled, I remained without my K2100M. I tried to find some on ebay and found, but I take into consideration also the Aliexpress. What is strange is that I see there "K2100M" with only 1GB VRAM. As far as I knew, the 2100 had only the 2GB variant... We will see, I never ordered anything from there and I hope they are reliable.

By the way, I do not see my Elitebook 8570W as an old product. The CPU is still a solid competitor (bigger score in CPU benchmark than 6700HQ Skylake), max 32GB DDR3 (which honestly has nothing less than DDR4) and the GPU is a decent one (from business perspective). With SSD/WifiAC and DC display I find it quite "top" in 2016. Mine is from 2013. Indeed, is heavy but also solid... It depends what you need to do.
If you need to browse you can use your smartphone instead of a lighter laptop. I prefer a workstation to have when doing something outside my house. -
Well 8570w is a bit better than 8560w in mobility because the power efficiency is better. And DC display is still really good by todays standards. The standard 1080p is OK but not wonderful.
I am going to return my K2100M and hope I get refund. -

Ok, so if I plug my Display Port to the monitor I am able to flash the vBIOS? I guess yes but better to check.
-
Today I ordered a K1100m from Taobao. A first for me, so we will see how it goes.
I expect it will take a long time because I will opt for the cheapest shipping, so I will be back in about a month hopefully. -

Why 1100 and not 2100? I still think if it makes sense for me to upgrade. It is more a project to see if I will manage, not because of need. Because I still game on my desktop 2x780 SLI and works fine.
Question is, how reliable is the "case" of the laptop? If you disassemble and re-assemble you take some risk to broke something? -
My english is so poor.

The GTX 965M can work for Dreamcolor display?

I think not, this works only for non-DC displays. For DC ones max is K2100M.

My K2100M arrived today from US. It looks nice.
I hope I will not have any problems, but please help me with blind flashing if I will not manage to do it. -

Everything seemed to work well, but when I started it I have black screen on the laptop's screen and on a monitor connected via VGA.
After a few seconds the fan starts to spin at 100% rotation.... -
So does it boot or not? Since you say the fan goes to 100%?
My 8560w has very strange problems now.
One problem is that I cant use windows in UEFI mode anymore. I can't install, and can't boot. Install hangs at 0%. Legacy always works 100% ok.
The other problem is that the keyboard randomly goes insane. Example, I type "abcdefg" and the result is something like "qabhc.dx5esf3g"
It is not due to the keyboard itself. I think the motherboard has some issues. It could be BIOS related, but since HP only provide partial BIOS updates , a full reflash is not possible. -
The black screen seems to be normal ( push me) you have to flash the Dell vBios to an MSI vBios (maybe blind flash, if its flashable) but i think its important that the notebook boot... correct me if im wrong...
sorry for my bad english -
Hallo to all of you guys
after helping in this thread for many years and beeing one of the few that was able to run 2 7970m in crossfire in a Alienware M17x R2 (as seen in this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...imate-installation-and-tweaking-guide.720908/ )
now i sold my alienware and got my hands in a free HP elitebook 8570w non dreamcolor. I got it for free from a client of mine. installed an ssd 256GB and the last days i started searching what i could do with its graphics.
so after seeing this video
i got ahead and ordered a gtx 965m from ebay.
when i receive it next week i will try to make this work. if it does it will be a keeper as the laptop will be able to cover my gaming needs and is actually a great chassis with its aluminum body.
i ordered from here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302126743306?_trksid=p2057872.m2748.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
the seller says they are new cards pulled from clevo laptops.
i dont know what bios it will have. i will have to flash it with the one tha t worked in the youtube video VBIOS: 84.06.52.00.27
what i want to know is if the card has a non compatible bios it wont let me get into dos so i can flash it yes? so i will have to install it in a compatible laptop to try and flash it... -
Good luck there. As far as I know late 15" EliteBooks (yours including) and the ZBooks (not sure about 17" ones) got their vBIOS into the system BIOS, which prevents upgrading. Otherwise as you already know, they are great machines and BTW the chassis is magnesium/aluminum combo with some plastic here and there
-
then how did soundoflenses upgrade his 8570w with a 965m?
i think that the elitebooks have vbios and they only use it when the card inserted doesnt have an onboard vbios. these 965m have a vbios chip onboardtriturbo likes this. -
That's interesting. Maybe most (all) of the people around here that tried to upgrade didn't get flashlight to the display and missed to note that it works. Can't really tell, but great news, none the less
Good luck with your upgrade! Oh and welcome to the club
-
thank you. !!
wish me luck i just paid 360 $ for it!!! -
Tons of good luck then! BTW if you ever feel that the 965m is not enough for your needs, you are always welcome to give a shot at what this topic was initially intended - fitting MXM-B
-
i keep the idea of a mxm-b card in the back of my head. i was thinking about it all night.
its a great experiment to do because i think in term of physical placement it can be done. i dont know if the vbios of the card will work . i will take it one step at a time. and start with the mxm-a upgrade -
By the way..... i think this heatsink would sit great on the 8560w mxm B card if we would install one.... it would just use the empty DVD drive tray, looks like its the perfect size

Looks good, but there are two issues that I see. Would it cover the core? I think that the VRMs would be on its way, or I'm missing something. The second - would it be enough? Routing additional pipe back to the stock fan assembly would nail it if you ask me - this is meant to cool about 50W, so is the on-board cooling solution. You can improve this little thing by fitting larger radiator and a fan with more blades. Let's see how the 965m would turn-out first
-
i see your points
if i dont try it i cant measure the physical dimensions of the above heatsink . so we have to wait until after i test and try the 965m -
Very interesting topic, i've got the 8570w too and i'm looking to upgrade the graphics on it so can't wait for your results
I wonder, is the 965m close enough physically to the official upgrades K1000m and K2000m, so the VRMs and such will settle nicely under the heatsink? -
Btw, how are your temps?
I found an article from Anandtech showing temps up to 98c on the CPU package (i7 3720QM) and 69c on the GPU (FirePro 4000), under AIDA64's stress test.
Mine max out at 91c CPU / 74c GPU under load (gaming, i7 3720QM, Quadro K1000m @ 954 / 1880 mhz) after i changed the original thermal paste to Arctic MX-4.
-
today i got the card but i have to prepare the drivers ini file edit etc.
my temps with the quadro k1000 are very cool actually. the cpu goes to 60C and the gpu is at 75 while playing BF4 or DOW 2
and these are without a fan undertray . if you use one it drops the temps almost 10 degrees
so i will have to install on the following days and see if it works. -
Cool, i wish you luck!
I wonder how the driver edit goes on Linux?
edit: Ah, thank you google: http://null-bin.blogspot.fi/2015/08/how-to-modify-nvidia-notebook-driver.html
" For Linux users you don't have to modify drivers to use upgraded GPU's in notebooks, everything just works as you would expect."
Regarding temps, i wonder why my cpu temps are so high... Could the heatpipe from cpu to heatsink be broken?
I think i'll order another heatsink and try to mod it a bit like in this link: https://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1677999 (its in dutch, use Google translate if interested)
Last edited: Dec 8, 2016 -
something is wrong with your temps. 98C in the cpu is very very high!!!
-
I know but that temp was from the Anandtech article, mine are "only" 91c/74c... Still pretty high, though.
-
its done!!!! i installed the 965 mxm card . as soundoflenses had mentioned until the drivers were installed the backlight didnt work. Also when the laptop boots (bios etc) the backligt doesnt work.
on the plus side. inside windows all is perfect . its fast , teh fan is working on auto. after gaming and benching it got to 84C and thats it. The CPU got to 92 . All these in a hot room of 25C and without a FAN base (i always use one with my alienware double sli 7970m laptop as it got HOT without it)
tomorow i will test with the fan laptop base.
some first pics on the next posttriturbo likes this. -
It would've been REALLY strange if it was otherwise, since drivers are loaded once the Windows logo shows-up. But yeah, I was looking forward to see confirmation. -
i dont understand why the backlight doesnt work out of windows, and why the drivers are needed to make it lightup . anyways, its a minor bug.
have been running unigine heaven benchmark for 10 mins now and the gpu temp is 82 stable. also the CPU max temp 85. and these are in a hot room without any underground fan tray for the laptop. thats so great!! score 2528 and 100.4 fps GREAT! -
Niccccceee!
Just to confirm, you used the K1000m heatsink? HP has 3 official options and i was wondering if it would align nicely. Did you replace any of the heat transfer pads with better ones? What thermal paste did you use? -
i used arctic silver ceramic (sadly i found my arctic silver 5 after i closed the laptop so just used ceramique .
i used the green pads from the 1100k and the heatsink of the 1100k
everything aligns super
i just had to swap the x brakets from the k1100 to the 965 -
i'm going now to buy a fan subtray for the laptop. i want to test the difference it makes in CPU & GPU temps
also i tested 3d mark firestrike and got a 4888 points. i think i can get more points out of it -
by the way, i am the only one that ever tested gtx 965m with the i7-3630qm cpu
http://www.3dmark.com/search?_ga=1....X 965M&cpuName=Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor -
Update guys. the current heatsinks and the small fan are not enough to handle the gtx 965m. although i dont have shutdowns when playing for a long time the temps reach 100-104C for the CPU and 90 for the gpu.
So i will go ahead and insert another heatsink and fan in the area of the dvd tray, as this thread says. if it succeds then probably it will also work for an MXM B card and if it does sky is the limittriturbo likes this. -
Congrats on the successful upgrade! Maybe you want to try with a new fan first. Measure the rotor's diameter and check how much larger fan can fit in there. Maybe the ZBook 15's fan could fit and cool better. Maybe even the ZBook 17's fan (68~69mm).
-
this is the fan and heatsink of the 8570w
as you can see the fan assebly is weird in shape because its inder the heatpipe.
do you think i could swap it with something else?
-
From the looks of yours, I don't think that the ZBook 15's fan would bring any improvement. Seems to be the same size, same number of blades, so no need to sweat on it.
-
i think the solution is ti add another heatpipe and fan from the other side (in the place of the dvd drive) . it will solve the problem .already ordered a heatsink fan that i think will fit
if it works on the mxm A 965 it will probably work on a MXM B card too.... ;-) -
Can you make a shot of the entire top without the keyboard (and probably the palm-rest) to make you a quick sketch how I see it? I'm certain that it can become pretty beasty machine, but it would require a lot of work.
8560w GPU upgrade - use empty DVD slot to fit MXM 3.0b (higher spec) video cards
