I have a almost new 8730W. Do to a crash I upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit (had a copy laying around). Everything worked fine in the upgrade but the video card drivers would not take. The card drivers will not install and the systems dummies it down to basic VGA drivers. When I attempt to install the card drivers from Nvidia it comes back that the control center could not be installed and roles back the drivers. When I install the HP drivers the system freezes on boot with all lights on but a black screen. If I wait long enough (hours) the system will restart and flag the video card as the issue. It them roles the drivers down to basic VGA. The card in the system is the Nvidia 2700M. As mentioned I have tried the drivers from HP and from Nvidia. I have tried using the Nvidia software removal tool to see if there were some strange left over driver dirt but still nothing. The laptop will boot up to safe mode but it freezes with a black screen and will not complete boot with the HP video drivers installed. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the NBR forums. :)

What driver versions have you tried? I'm assuming you tried the HP-supplied version (189.18) and the NVIDIA-supplied version (197.16). You can try the newest WHQL version available from NVIDIA to see if your problem is solved.

    Version 197.44 from NVIDIA Developer - http://developer.download.nvidia.co...otebook_win7_winvista_32bit_international.exe

Make sure that all previous versions of the driver have been removed first. :) Just an FYI, version 197.45 is also available on Microsoft Update but try the version I posted for now.

    Hi justinkw1,

Thanks for your response I have tried the following drivers:
189.18 the driver included in the service pack form HP
    197.16
    197.45

and per your note I just completed installation of 197.44 with the same result. The computer boots I get the windows screen where the green bar is moving from left to right as it boots up. And then it goes to a black screen with all the lights on. The only way to reset from this is to push and hold the power button down. One last bit of history on this PC it was running windows XP perfectly with Nvidia drivers prior to the windows vista installation.

    thanks,

    Siggo
