Since your computer must be empty, with no personal files on it yet, I think a clean reinstall is the best choice.

Get a copy of Windows 7 from here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html
Scroll down to ISO Method, and pick a file there. Read the rest of the post, especially regarding ei.cfg (IMPORTANT) and what it does.

Here's a good guide for the installation process: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-compaq/432564-hp-laptop-out-box-guide-2-0-windows-7-a.html
Press F9 when you start the computer to choose which device to boot from.

Remember to pick Custom/Advanced method (IMPORTANT), and remove ALL partitions (IMPORTANT) on the HDD before installing.
Basically, do exactly as this guy: YouTube - How to Format and Reinstall Windows 7

Here are all drivers: HP EliteBook 8740w Mobile Workstation- Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

    Good luck! :)

    wrong thread?

anyway, thnx for the info mats. i read it over and prepared myself for the challenge. but then just for the hell of it, i called HP tech. i gave him my serial number and he told me that I'm entitled to a 64 bit OS for free with the recovery CD containing all 64bit drivers as well! that way there's no guesswork as to which ones to install. thnx agn.
    love this laptop so far!

Exactly, my second post shouldn't be there.

Anyway, if you use the recovery discs you fill the computer with a lot of bloatware, unless you find a "minimal install" option during the process.

There is no guesswork involved when reinstalling with a retail disc.

    Do as you wish.

HP business machines are usually pretty free of bloatware. When I clean installed to my SSD using the provided discs, they provided plenty of chances to opt out of optional software.
