To be honest I really like the old styling, and I don't really like the new styling. I am primarily going to be using a notebook for working around the house and outside the house, and showing clients design. For my work it's mostly designing websites and databases, and sometimes programming.

What are the pros/cons for each of the 17 inchers, and is it still possible to buy the 8740w if that's the one I want to get?

I haven't really looked into it, but one of the real perks of having the 8740w was the fact that of having 16:10 screen, especially when the display was configured to 1920x1200 (WUXGA). The newer, 8760w, is limited to 1920x1080. But also here are some obvious differences that you can expect between the two models:

Graphics Card: The 8740w is running on the Quadro 5000M while the 8760w is supporting the newly released Quadro 5010M. The newly released Quadro 5010M has the ability to provide more memory per second than it's predecessor and mainly due to the fact that it has 384 CUDA Cores as opposed to the 320 in the 5000M model.

Processors: The 8760w comes with the most recent processors, although you I'm not sure if you can go ahead and update the processors in the 8740w to the current line. I'm not sure if HP, because I know that Dell sets BIOS limitations against certain processors or just doesn't introduce an updated version for newer processors.

I would simply just get the 8740w, even though new Quadro is better than the older one, it's probably not that much of a difference, especially since you won't be doing any 3D Modelling. I would recommend trying to find an unused (brand-new) model on eBay and working on it yourself.

Yeah, that's what I meant by the current line, I wasn't sure if you could switch and swap.
