Seeing that mr. @mirage_bg is still keeping tabs on this popular model, I have decided to take my trusty 8770w from the drawer.

What is the current "state of art" for 8770w? Things that come to mind:
    • 3820QM CPU. XMs run hotter and further restrict GPU due to the shared fan.
    • LP173WF3-SLB3 screen, assuming one has the DC converted / assy.
    • 32Gb RAM
    • ??? GPU, there were some passing reports of 1070 / M5000 working though. I personally run K4000M.
    • 2x SATA3 SSDs. Not sure about mSATA status with the latest BIOS, have to check.
DVD caddy is limited to SATA2 as far as I remember.
    • AX200 WIFI module. Reported to work with the installed antennas.
Am I missing something? Should it be SLB2 instead of SLB3?.. Let's keep the monster alive :)

Cant speak to the SLB3/2 (are those dreamcolor?). Mine doesn’t have the dreamcolor board for edp connection so I have never explored a screen swap.

That said - have replaced everything else. You’re correct on the CPU, everything from the 3820 up will about the same thanks to heat constraints. The M5000M is the Ultimate GPU for this in my opinion. Everything works correctly with it and it is less power hungry and hot than a 980m. Supposedly 1070/p4000/p5000 could work but you’ll need dreamcolor board to go beyond the maxwell based GPUs.

32gb ram, Blu-ray drive (if you’re into such things) - it is SATA 2 btw…, upgrading to wireless AC/AX, adding the HP secondary/extended battery packs if you can find them is also a good move. I have one the smaller ones and a BB09 for mine that adds an extra 100wh which actually makes these decent as portable systems. The downside with the BB09 pack is that you’ll block one of the intake vents a bit so I don’t do anything demanding with that one in place.
