    Hello there,
I've bought second hand Advanced docking station (the one with multibay, expresscard slot, but no HDD or cooling fan).

The problem is neither of my 90W or 180W (bought for the standard docking station) smart adapters won't fit the power jack. The jack looks like it has only 2 connectors, not 3 as the smart adapters do.

Any ideas how to solve this without buying a new adapter for this dock? Any working hack, mod, cable reduction, resoldering the jack, anything will do.
    Thank you!

HP has an adapter for that.

Help me choose - Power Accessories

It converts the new AC plugs to the old standard. In that link you can see the adapter included in couple first sets. I don't know if it's available separately, probably is but a part number would be needed.

thanks for the tip, however this part may be available only through second hand trade as I've alread contacted official hp support center and they've said there is not any available convertor for me.

That's possible, I don't remember seeing it sold separately altough that doesn't mean it wouldn't be. If you really want it and need a slimmer travel adapter too, get one that includes the plug converter.

just checked this but never noticed before, it is a little thicker than the one for my notebook (nw8240) (all newer plugs are the same for docking stations, laptops and so on, however, the output power is of course different of the different PSUs and that is also important)

But I wouldn't mess with the power adapter, get the right one, 2nd hand if it is no longer available, and make sure it has 30 watts more power than the one for your notebook.

so your nw8240 has just 2 pin power plug (the thin one)?

I'm not afraid with messing with this as I the PSU I got for docking stations has 90 more watts than the one for notebook.

If only I could get the thick female jack and thin male jack :(

yes, the nw8240 has the thin one. I never tried before to use the docking PSU with the laptop (I thought this works like with the newer docking stations for my 8730w)

maybe you can get a simple docking station EN488AA with 120 Watt PSU cheap (if 120W is enough) and use that PSU

A few versions of the docking stations from HP are looked after but most of the older ones I think you can get real cheap on the famous auction site...

actually I did get the docking station pretty cheaply, but as almost every local auction I've seen they are sold without the PSU completely. So I can't get that PSU.

I will go to local HP servis center and ask them for those power supply jacks.

so I've bought the adapter from old connector to 3 pin connector, however the other end was too slim, so I wanted to buy adapter for even older connector, but hp doesn't supply those. So it ended with DIY mod.

It doesn't look that bad IRL, copper wire is there just for added sturdiness. Both connectors are fully operational and work with either the old connector or the 3 pin.

    HAPPY END! :D
