I understand that HP has delayed the release of the next generation of models due to Intel chip problems. Does anyone have any decent information as to when HP expects to release the newest model?

I understand that the new models will be very sweet with unibody construction and a titanium deck

Business models always come out a few months after consumer notebooks for the exact reason of working out kinks from other sources (ie. Intel), so I doubt there will be much delay (though this really depends on Intel). Not sure if I'd like a unibody construction, especially if it's similar to the crap MBP has (yes, I have one so I do have experience on this). I also believe it will have a chiclet keyboard which I'm not a fan of.

Yes, well you'll notice the discussion took place before the announcement. Also, the announcement indicates availability of March 15. As I pointed out, HP is behind last years roll-out by what now appears to be 1 month. I expect the p models to be in real hands by late March to early April. Of course the w models have yet to be announced and will have a staggered release as always.

i cannot continue the company's preorder of the new W range, it's just been put to TBC, we were last told June Availabilty before then.

however, the company now are going to wait for ivybridge - as they are going to stock up on 8740w's because of the death of 1200p.

Is it official that 1200p is dead :( I dont want 16:9 format laptop, might need to get a MBP at some point (Unless they also stop supporting 16:10)

its been official since the original announcement of sandy bridge.

Intel did not want 1200p because it's not a standard for HDTV video.

1920x1080 is for HDTV 'acceleration' so thats why we have it now.

Intel did not want to have to accelerate video on a non video standard screen.

(and the fact it's cheaper to manufacture 1080p screens)

Apple still has 1920x1200 and my friend just bought a Sandy Bridge MBP yesterday (the new MBP launched this week), so I assume Sandy Bridge is already good to go (or Apple is making a big mistake?!)

:) you mean that ivy bridge will support 1200p? As a result so many company prefer 1200p, will Intel still force user to custom? I think users of the W series of elitebook will not often see HDTV, as HDTV is enough with series like envy or dell XPS. 1080p is not bad to laptop above 15 inch, but 1200p is better, Hoping hp will not let us wait for several month.

well it's what the guys at the high end tech side say. i just do installation/management/configuration, so don't know completely.

the company do have about 35 8740w's now though, and have no plans to buy the new one, we're skipping this generation it seems.

Yes, the MBP is the exception though and not the rule.

The thing with Sandy Bridge allegedly restricting resolution to 1080p - it's still possible to use an external monitor with Sandy Bridge laptops and I doubt they are blocking monitors that have 1200p or 1600p resolution, so it must support those resolutions. What is really the deal is panel manufactures themselves are not producing 1200p or for 16:10 anymore, so manufactures are choosing it themselves most likely. The rumor is HP "8760w" uses the 17.3" form factor and it was mentioned in some HP support docs, which does pretty much confirm HP has switched to 16:9 though. :/

And the iPad has a 4:3 screen aspect ratio. Apple seems to have a source for such things that noone else does.
