When I purchased my Elitebook 8540w, I was told in a forum post here that it was possible to get audio out of the DisplayPort hen connecting to a TV using a DisplayPort > HDMI cable. I recently purchased one of these cables and while the video outputs fine, I cant figure out where to specify to redirect audio through the DisplayPort rather than the laptop speakers. If it matters, Im running Win7 x64
Has anyone been able to successfully do this?
Thanks!

If you go to the Sound settings in the Control panel, you should see an HDMI audio output device. You should be able to set that as the default device when you hook up the tv.
Some cables don't pass audio (the first one I got looked like a DVI cable to the laptop so it wouldn't send audio through the HDMI cable). I had to buy a different adapter that the computer recognized as HDMI to get audio working. -
hi
I have the 2450p and sound over displayport works fine for me.
I just plugged in the siplayport > hdmi adapter and sound worked out of the box.

Sorry for the late response on this.. I only use this with my work computer when I travel and havent been on the road for a bit. Anyway...
I cant seem to get any other playback devices to show regardless of whether the cable is plugged in or not in the sound control panel. I also dont checked the nVidia control panel and dont see anything there either.
I bought this cable from monoprice, which many of the reviews say it does do audio passthrough.
I should also note that under "Sound, video and game controllers" in device manager I do see 4 entries of " NVIDIA High Definition Audio".... which I would assume would mean what Im trying to use. So it seems like it should have the capability to do this.
Any other thoughts??
Thanks again guys. -
I believe the adapter has to be adaptive and support displayport 1.1a for sound to be passed through.
Audio from DisplayPort?
