To my big surprise I just found out through official HP sources that backlit keyboards for Elitebooks 8560w and 8760w are not available in the EMEA region (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) even though the partnumbers are available (check below), can anyone here confirm this?

    Thanks a lot

I cannot confirm but it is possible they do not exist. I have never seen one non-US backlit keyboard for the 8760w or 8560w

    Have you tried ebay?

I think they have supplier or quality problems but who knows? Or there are not enough people who want them and it is too expensive to produce them.

For the 8770w it still is only an option to get a backlit keyboard in Europe (no pre-configured model with it, as I know by now).

But maybe the 8770w backlit keyboard will fit in the 8760w. However, until now the 8770w is not available in Europe so the backlit keyboards will not be available for a while, too (if the will get them at all ;) )

Try your official local HP parts supplier. I've got my Belgian Backlit from the belgian HP partsurfer website, even while google turned me up with nothing.

and have you tried to buy it at your hp shop? I tried my country version and it is not available from hp part shop at the moment. I guess it still depends on version and country (where your hp part shop is localized)

Many thanks for this link, will definitely come in handy.

Is it possible that a HP engineer could make upgrades for you like the keyboard if you have 3 year next business day on-site warranty? (this free of charge off course)

I can do it myself, but with this I wanna make sure they can't tell me the laptop was opened in the past when there's something wrong with it and need to claim warranty.

    Hello there,

Are you really sure that the backlit keyboards for 8770w are compatible with 8760w?

I have spoken with the HP tech support and they have told me that this is not the case:-(

Have you bought and fitted the backlit keyboard for the 8770w into your 8760w successfully?

Thanks a lot in advance for any feedback.

    Best Regards,

    Max

I'm also particularly interested in this, so much so that I am very much tempted to spend the £90 for the 8770 keyboard and attempt to install it in my 8760.

They never had a british backlit version and even higher up in the B2B Sales channels all HP staff were skipping beats when you tried to get a solid answer out of them prior to ordering.

The PN exists on the quickspecs and maintenance sheets they issued for the 8760w but absolutely nowhere could I find a distributor/reseller/HP B2B Sales person able to actually place an order on the part number.

VeeMan, exactly, I think EMEA was skipped completely, but if the 8770w keyboard part fits the 8760w, then the problem is solved.

Let me know if you do this

I finally got it working - WOW it was a real quest...;-)
    On my 8760W - the keyboard designed for ( 8770W ) - 688738-031 is working Fine !!
I managed to install the driver as well - can set the time the lights fade...5s 15s 30 etc...
I thought there were two brightness settings for the keys but I cannot figure out how to control it...

    Anyway,

    Hi, I have Windows 7 x64 ....
At first I couldn't make it work...Updated windows most updates and suddenly started working...its just a setting where you set the time the keys dim...keyboard drivers panel...
or you can set the time in BIOS...
most of the time I just switch the illumination on and off using the F key with Fn...

    Cheers for the brave..;-)

As this thread is dead for almost a year let me at least tell where the backlit keyboards are available at the moment. I discovered them at ebay. all sellers from China or Hongkong. Both types 652554-001 (8760w) and 688738-001 (8770w) are available.
As I want to sell my 8760w within coming months in India I will try to replace my non-backlit german keyboard by the appropriate US backlit keyboard 652554-001.
Will give a short post regarding the result of my try at this years end.
