Can I upgrade the chipset of my notebook 8740w to accomodate the 2nd generation core i7 processors. Thanks.

no, I think you need a different mother board (but there is no such mother board available until now and I don't think it will be)

Imo its smarter to sell the old laptop and buy new one than upgrading motherboard. Upgrading motherboard might be worth doing only if old mobo is dead and not refurbishable. That is my subjective opinion.

Indeed, I didnt think of this fact.
Anyway, 16x10 supporters will quite fast get used to 16x9 either. As I have noticed, that there are few people working with graphics, that require 16x10, but they usually use external screens or desktop PCs for that. -
external screens are almost all 16:9 already?
I think Apple still sticks to 16:10, so it must be something different as a reason. -
I have a 16:9 model laptop, the G73JH. I can't work on it with 3D because i'm not used to having to shrink images to 720p so they are in the right Aspect Ratio!
This is the same for steroscopic images, 16:10 screen can display the full 1080p picture, without me having to resize it to 720p where the 'effect' of the 3D image is lost.
But i guess i'm an old stickler and stuck in my way, but my company are keeping ahold of their 8740s for the time being! especially if hp moves to 16:9 -
^^ You're not the only one, Bro. 16:10 FTW.
Back on topic, there's hardly any need to upgrade to 2gen core i7, 99% software is still lagging way behind to effectively utilize a more powerful CPU. -
Well, maybe if you want the upgraded battery life of Sandy Bridge... but if you have an 8740w, you could just get one of those extended batteries that attaches to the bottom... that might get us up to, what, 4-6 hours?
