    Hello,

A friend of mine owns this laptop, it's several years old now.
He was playing a game and got a BSOD complaining about an ATI related driver, and the system shutdown. After that, he started the laptop again, but there was no image or light on the screen, although the laptop's leds were working as usual.

I think the laptop had been suffering high temperatures for a long time, because he used to put it over soft surfaces such as his bed or sofa, and when i opened the laptop, there was a thick dust blanket between the fan and the heat sink. So i think the game caused the worst and fatal overheating.

To test it, I have connected an external LCD to the VGA-out port, and I can see POST screen with some visual errors (a pattern of 0's appearing along the screen and some thick vertical bars in the background), but when Windows Vista is finishing its start, before showing the desktop, it always throws the same BSOD. I can run Windows Vista into safe mode in this external LCD, but with the same vertical thick bars in the background. In this photos you can see what i mean:

I was going to buy an ATI Radeon HD 2600 second hand, but before doing that, I want to be sure the problem is not the motherboard or the processor. I will appreciate your advice.

    Thanks.

yes, most likely it´s the graphics card. your conclusions seem to be correct this far.

if you are about to buy another graphics card anyway, you might wanna try fixing the micro connections ( soldering) on the board of the hd 2600 first. google for " baking a graphics card" and maybe you are willing to try fixing the graphics card.

the result is temporary - might works for a short period, or for the rest of the 8510p´s life.

Fix Your Graphics Card By Baking In Oven

hope this will work for your friend´s notebook !

the vertical lines and odd display are signs of corruption, which thankfully as it displays through the external, just means the card is a bit damaged indeed.

You can sometimes get this due to a bad driver, (stop 0x116 is GPU timeout, which can be caused by several factors) but in this case, it is almost certainly heat damage.

Oh, I forgot about the oven method...

Awesome! Now it is working after 9 minutes of baking it in the oven at 190ºC!

    Let's see for how long...

    Thanks schoko!

@Siorah: Now we are sure the card is damaged. Thanks for helping.

Good to hear you got it working again.

Some people have had luck and used their "new"-baked cards for a few month, some even for more than a year. Hope your friend will have some more pleasure with his 8510P. I´m just typing on my good old, and i have to say i really like this notebook. I am sure i would miss it once it would break.

    best

    Thanks.

The laptop is up and running since a few hours ago, but I haven't stressed the graphics card running games or similar software, I have just used it for reading documents and browsing the web.

Whenever it fails again, I will try to update this topic (maybe never)

    Cheers.
