I have to say that you wrote one of the most comprehensive, informative and balanced review I have ever read! It also made me want to go out and buy an 8460w - NOW. But I won't, not yet. I would very much appreciate it if you would occasionally update your review (it's not really so "mini" as you have termed it!) with quality/reliability experience, particularly in the next 30-60 days. My biggest reluctance to buy an Elitebook product again is that the quality control has been quite poor for several models and HP tech support is uneven at best.

One other thing: would you mind giving us an idea what your net cost was for this computer? Did you purchase it as an individual or through a small business or large enterprise contract?

Thanks again for a really fine piece of work and a service to NBR members. :)

Nice review, I've been waiting for anything to show up about the new Elitebook line and you've given me exactly the fix I needed. Thanks!

Solid review. Makes choosing between a 14" and 15" so difficult. The GPU is half as powerful while the battery life is practically double the 15". The screen is decent but the 15" has the IPS option. The weight is pretty good though the thickness isn't that good, while the 15" is significantly heavier and still pretty thick (but not as much relative to other 15" models). Also, still not a fan of the chiclet keyboard, though to be fair I have not tried the ones on the new Elitebooks first hand. Tough decision!

Btw something to the cost. The 8460w is not available in Switzerland. So I ordered it in the US 1600$ which are something like 1328 swiss francs. which shipping and taxes the whole thing cost about 1600 swiss francs.

a good 8460p configuration costs in switzerland like 2000 swiss francs

    8460w (US) - i7-2630QM 2x4GB, 500GB, 14.0'' HD+, 9cell battery - 1328.00 swiss francs
    8460p (Swiss) - i7-2620M 1x4GB, 320GB, 14.0" HD+, 6cell battery - 2000.00 swiss francs

For those bringing a US Spec machine to the EU, be aware that in terms of the warranty fine print you're not covered for a US Model number in the EU.

I am not sure but you I think you can buy a travel warranty, which will cover repairs in the EU

Good review. HP should have opted to have a backlit keyboard on the 8640W instead of a backlit logo...

Really good review. Would it be possible for you to put it on a weighing scale to get an accurate idea of the weight. Hp lists the 8460p weight as starting at 4.6 lbs but laptopmag in their review say it's 5.4 lbs. I really wish laptop makers would list accurate weights based on diff configs
    Thanks in advance!

I believe that HP posts the weight with 6 cell battery and no cd drive. A realistic weight with the 9 cell is the 5.4

    A quick question:

is it possible to upgrade the CPU on the 8460p and say swap the 2620M for the 2630QM or is the CPU soldered to the motherboard??

I will try to post the weight with a 9-cell battery and a dvd-rom this weekend or next week.

They are no soldered in, so a CPU upgrade is possible. Whether or not there are differences in heatsinks with quad core models is a different story. But if you apply a good thermal paste well, then it should be fine.

    Hi all,

My first post, and directly a stupid question^^ :)
Even at the cost of repeating anybodys question.

Which kind of panel is installed in the 8460w?
Is it such as horribly as the 8460p panel?

Okay I´m aware that it is still a TN panel but maybe it´s a little bit better in terms of birghtness and color space...

I´m planning to buy one, unfortunately it isn´t launched in Germany so far, therefore I have to order via the US store.

    Cheers!

Whats the difference between 8460p and 8460w ? I can only find the p version in the UK.. Is there a difference?

Also, is the screen that bad?

And finally, I'm between this and Lenovo T420s.. any suggestions are welcome.

    Color and GPU.

I think it's better to compare 8460w/p to t420 because of more similar size and weight. T420s is much thinner, offers ~half battery life and people say that it's extremely loud under stress.

Thank you chrismc. Haven't heard about that loudness complain, is it something common? Anyway probably t420s is not really worth the extra cost compared to t420.
I don't care at all about the gpu, and the color of the p version seems fine, so I guess there's nothing different with the w version for me. Good to know that.

I should probably open a new thread to compare 8460p and T420. Looking into their prices with similar configurations now. I suppose you got the hp right?

Edit: opened the thread here : http://forum.notebookreview.com/wha...594700-lenovo-t420-vs-hp-elitebook-8460p.html
