I have contacted HP asking about the possibility to output UHD content to my external Monitor.
The graphic card I have on my 8770 is a NVIDIA K3000M (capable of playing and outputting 4K)
This was confirmed by Nvidia. But the answer from HP is that it's not possible to have 4K output
due to hardware restrictions on the laptop
I was wondering if there is any modification, hardware upgrade, trick, or change that would make
it possible to output 4k as this laptop is playing 4K videos very smooth and the graphic card is able
to do the job?
Any thoughts?

Have you tried it? I haven't looked at the 8770w's schematics, but I have looked at 8740w's ones and I can tell that the DP is pass through. It means that it doesn't go into any chips/muxes/whatever. So whatever comes out from the GPU, goes to the DP connector. The question is, how is the DP output wired at GPU level.

Yes I have tried. I connected it to a 4K TV and while nvidia control panel detects the TV as 4K UHD but you don't get the choice to get the resolution
higher the full HD -
What cable you've used?
-
4K HDMI Cable! but of course it should go through the display port adapter as the laptop dose not have
HDMI out. -
It might be the adapter.

I was hoping that this is the case, but I called HP. They opened a case and told me that they need an official response and then called me a week later to let me know
that because of hardware restriction it will not be possible to have 4k output from this port! I hope they are wrong! But I doubt it! -
Check this, there are others, but I'll leave the research to you. Good luck!

Thank you very much for your replies tritubo. I just checked the page out and I think the problem is that hp has DisplayPort revision 1.1 installed on these models.
As a result all you get even with the adapter is 1080p. I'm hoping someone in this forum could figure out a way ! Maybe we could replace the display port! For this
to work we need DisplayPort revision 1.2 -
Actually giving it a second thought, yours has switchable graphics, right? In this case, you are so out of luck, since the dedicated GPU (dGPU) is routed through the integrated GPU (iGPU), which is POS and wont output anything more than 1080p I think, 4K wont cut it for sure. This is unfixable as far as I know. Older systems, would do fine (on theory), as long as one has 4K capable GPU in there. If I ever come across the 8770w's schematics, I'll give it a look, but yes, for once HP might know their stuff and gave you the right answer.
