Elitebooks and Thinkpads are not two monolithic categories; there are more durable members of each family. Both are high quality business notebooks and each have strengths and weaknesses. What particular models or size/weight range were you interested in?

At least a 14inch and above. No need for a good battery or anything fancy. My t400 died after 2 years of domestic abuse. I don't do anything besides web surfing and office work.

I'd choose the latest Elitebook 840 G1, very nice appearance, and excellent performance.

Plus drives for Win7, Win8 and Win8.1, pretty much can fit all kind of usage.

This being said, I'd rate the Elitebook series consistently above the T and W lines of the Thinkpad. Materials, torsional strength, sheer ruggedness. (Other advantages too, such as upgradeability - access to components.) This being said, the Lenovos are above average on these counts, as well as lighter and cheaper than the EBs.
