My HP Elitebook 8770W GPU seem to be faulty and unfortunately it's not a right time for me to buy a new laptop. The problem started with a freeze during a game and then when I restarted the laptop there is a red cross on the Display adapter in device manager. Only way to have the laptop work is to use "Microsoft basic display driver" and if I install the nvidia drivers pc will freeze at next boot.

I really need to get this laptop work for me for few more months. So I need to replace the graphic card. I read the forum and see that there are some compatible GPUs. I prefer not to take an expensive one as I also am afraid that the laptop is old and is not going to live long enough to justify any big investment.

So could you please kindly guide me and tell me what choices I have (preferably most easy and less risky choices). Ideal situation for me would be to find a card that will not require heat sink change and bios flash.

I am running windows 10 pro and have the latest HP Bios flash installed.

I saw this card on ebay France: GTX 970M Graphics Card 6GB MXM for DELL Alienware 15X 17X 18X HP MSI GT70 GT60. The price is reasonable and the seller is located near me. Do you think that it will work with my laptop? Or are there better choices in same price range?

here is an attached picture of the card:

There is also a Nvidia Quadro k5000m 4 Go GDDR 5 Carte Graphique Ordinateur Portable 699-52051-0502-100 which cost 200 euros (30 euros more then 970M)
I don't even know which one is better!

Thank you very much for you reply skflsdkjfld. It's very nice to know that a solution is here and that you are located in Germany as I am
in France and it's much easier for me to pay in euros and shipment is not going to take long. But now that I have to change the GPU I
was hoping that I could upgrade to a better GPU as K3000M was not good with games. Do you by any chance have a GPU that could
be an upgrade? Even K4000M would be a step forward for me!

    Bonjour,
    i can not help with "Gaming-Stuff", i am not a Computer-Gamer, sorry.
And the HP 8760/8770 are not "Gaming-Laptops", these are Workstations,
look at the Back. The Cooling-System can not handle more Heat-Power as
designed, its only 1 Fan. GPU 3000 max. is 75 Watts plus CPU with 35 or
45 Watts, more is too much, you will "burn" your Components over Time.
Replace carefully your defective Card with an original Part and remember
that the System is not for 100 Percent Full-Power over Hours, it will
die. Yor can find the Servicemanual for the Procedure at the hp Website.
Good Luck ! (Only 7 pcs. left in the Shop ...)
(sorry for the bad english, i hope your undstand it) sk

Unfortunately no one confirmed that any of the above gpus would work. So I didn't take the risk and
ordered the same gpu as i had (K3000M) for 40 euros and replace the defective one. Laptop is working
great again and gpu idles at 37 degrees in hot south of France weather. But It feels like a missed oportunity
to have an upgrade ! :)

This 970m would work without problem on your 8770w. It is a Clevo card and they work great on 8770w in general.
