Hi,
I have a zbook 17 mobile workstation, with 10bit dreamcolor LG 02FC display. The laptop currently has Nvidia Quadro K3100m GPU, which is underpowered for madVR, or 4k content. So I have been trying to find a suitable upgrade, ideally from nvidia pascal line, that could work with the 10bit display. I don't want to compromise on color or display.
This zbook came preinstalled with k4100m, that stopped working without any warning. So I had to replace it with the k3100m, pulled off from Dell m6800. The replaced card worked out of the box and I didn't have to mod bios or anything. That surprised me since I know HP has whitelist for parts but somehow the k3100m didn't have any dell specific bits? Since I got the m6800 from ebay, its possible that the seller used generic card? I am trying to find something similar that will work out of the box.
If you have upgraded this machine, I would love your insight. I have read few posts suggesting that AMD GPU would be a better option since nvidia has 8bpc bug in Windows 10 referred here:

Due to this bug, I currently use old nvidia drivers (388.16). So whatever upgraded nvidia GPU I will settle on, this notorious bug may carry over. This may be due to implementation of HDR in windows 10, which messed up the way drivers and OS handles 10bit SDR displays of zbook & 8770w.

@xexexex any update on your upgrade? I'm thinking about doing the same thing for my Zbook 17 G1. I have a K610M and would like to go as high as I can. I am also about to put in a new crucial MX500 1TB SSD. Current CPU is i7-4700MQ.
Update 12/2/21: It looks like the max I can go is as follows:
GPU: NVIDIA K5100M
CPU: i7-4940MX
I haven't tried it yet, but I am considering making those upgrades...Last edited: Dec 2, 2021
