My 8510w with HP Advanced Docking has been a "Generic USB Hub" issue as follows:

    1. From the Device Manager, under "Universal Serial Bus controllers", there is one or two "Generic USB Hub" intermittently, but during most of time, more than 80%, there is no any item named as "Generic USB Hub".

    2. When such one or two "Generic USB Hub" dislayed, I received the system warning for "unknown device" which is appeared intermittently.

    3. All 6 USB PORTS at the docking station are always no function, but the power to it is always available.

    4. All 4 USB PORTS at 8510w are working fine.

Do you have any solution on this matter? If I need to install driver(s) for "Generic USB Hub", how to do it?

ok i rang up our tech guy.

This is a known issue as seen here. It is an olddddd one though

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...597015&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=4138087

Seems you need to turn off and on the docking station to get them to reregister.

    curious.

the drivers i gave you are for the wrong docking station lol.

I don't have any issue with my docking station, but i do get the usbs turning off from time to time i just never thought it was an actual problem

Siorah, Thank you very much for your timely reply!

The HP link was quite old and it was issued out prior to my purchasing date for 8510w but I do believe that would be just matching with my current problem. However, it looks like that HP does not have any real solution on this matter - RESOLUTION: Contact HP for assistance, and I just guess what HP said "The only way to get them to re-detect is to power cycle the Advanced Docking station" is same as yours "need to turn off and on the docking station to get them to reregister", but how to do it?

If it means to turn off my laptor via either PC Power button or Windowns shutdown or Docking Power button, I had do it so many times.

I just try one more power off option as follows:

took out the battery for laptop, and re-docking it, and start windows up to normal with the power supply via docking station, and then swiched off power supply to docking station, and then swiched on it.

After restarting the docked laptop, and shutdown it by windows restart twice, the problem is still there.

Should I do something in further step? please advise!

well i have my power to the laptop and the docking station, so i'm not sure what you're doing.

I keep the computer on while switching off the power to the docking station and it works for me.

i have 2 power supplies on the go

one for laptop, one for docking station.

    Siorah, thanks again!

What i used is one HP Advanced Docking Station, and when I docked my laptop, there is only one Power Supply to the docking station. I just guess what you used is not this one.

However, HP link as you provided above is for HP Advanced Docking Station, and my question now is how to "to get them to re-detect is to power cycle the Advanced Docking station"?

I just found other option from the web site that is requested to be shutdown without battery via forced ac power off for more than 30 minutes. I will go it for 45 minutes now.

After above forced AC power off shutdown when my docked laptop is running normally without battery, I restart them normally, docked and with battery, some docking USB Ports, at least TWO out of SIX, are good, but that only last for a few minutes. Again, such "Generic USB Hub" displayed under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" of device manager! Once I found these TWO ports is no function, this "Generic USB Hub" disappeared!

Any idea for such curious thing?

ok sam, are you powering the laptop from the docking station?

this is screaming insufficient power to me. on my 8740w i have to power both separately or the usb's don't work at all.

in fact remind me later, i'll try it when i get home without laptop power and see if it works or not.

but i remember having issues if i didn't power them both...

Siorah, you might be the only one having similar issue here and now, and please share your solution ASAP.

In addition, I would like to let you know that is impossible to power both of my 8510w and the advanced docking station since the Laptop power in hole will be blocked by such docking station. Your 8740w may have such power in hole opened.

What power supply are you using with the dock?

Normal 65W or 90W wouldn't be enough, you should be using 120W or 180W supplied with the dock.

As an example, I tried to use 90W with my own adv. dock and the expresscard slot wasn't powered.

Dear KLF, the power supply using is always the original one and it is rated at 120w.

    woah, only 120?

    i use a 180w/200w on my dock.

it could be a simple case of lack of power.

thanks a lot for your information, Siorah!

I will try to get one 180 or 200 w power supply as soon as possible.
