Be more precise - which EliteBook, which GTX 980M (MSI, Clevo, Dell etc), which OS?

Did you use the original X-Bracket from your previous card or you are using some other?
Can you post a photos of the card and the X-Bracket?
Do you see the HP logo on the initial boot screen and then the picture disappears or there is no any picture at all when you power up the laptop?
Do you have picture when connected via VGA/DP ports to external display?

Hi, thanks again for trying to help me here.

I removed the X bracket from the original an put it on the new Gtx 980m.

I have installed the old driver using DDU, then I installed the 980m card into the mxm slot and putting the heatsink back.

When I power the laptop back everything seems to be running as a normal fan running as usual but I can get any display on the screen.

No Hp logo comes up on the initial boot screen at all.

I've also tried to connect through VGA display on the external monitor to see if it works but with no luck.

Is there anything I'm doing wrong

Please see pictures [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Everything seems right what you’ve done.
There is not other option, but to take the card out and try it in another system, just to be sure this is working card.
For now all is pointing at faulty graphic card.
Is there any mark on the GPU indicating its vBios version? Any numbers? Can you send me the pic of the graphic card on both sides without heatsink on it?
It might be a g-sync version (hardware ID 1617) of GTX 980m which will not work on HP 8770W (the right one has to have HW ID 13D7), but most probably is vBios incompatibility between the GPU and your laptop. First send me the photos of the card (both sides) without heatsink on it and then we will see what should be done next.

Mate your help is much appreciated.

As requested please see pictures below of the actual GPU and the link from where I bought the GPU through eBay where the seller confirms its compatible with HP EliteBook 8770w.

Is there any setting I need to change in the bios maybe??

    You are very welcome!

Based on the photos, you have done in completely wrong way the arrangement of the thermal pads. They are way too thick for this setup. You need 1.5mm pads on every element (they must be soft thermal pads like Arctic). From the photos it seems the core have almost no contact at all with the heatsink, based on how the thermal compound has spread.
Please, remove all of the thermal pads for now, put less thermal compound on the core (rice and a half sized drop in the middle is enough) and tell me if the laptop boots normally this way (don’t worry there are no thermal pads on the vram and mosfets, this won’t hurt the card without intensive 3D tasks, which we will not use for now.

Hi, I have followed all the steps advice but still no display but if I put the original k4000m back it works fine. I am so confused lol

I contacted the seller and he said he tested the card on an HP EliteBook and it was working fine.

I not sure on the next steps is there anything I need to change in the bios setting or drivers before installing the actual card in.

I've previously upgraded to the K5100m and it was working fine all I did was mod the inf file and voila .

I got another card in my m17x R4 ( gtx 675) I will try it into the HP 8770w to see if it works.

Will keep you updated. If you find anything that might please do let me know.

    Cheers mate

Ok, the only step needs do be done is to pull the card out of the HP EliteBook and to put it in another notebook with MXM slot (m17x R4 in your case) to be sure the card is still alive and working.
Depending on that result, I will have more clearness about what to do next.

Hi, I've put the card 980m in the Alienware M17 and turn it on. I got the 8beeps sound code which doesn't stop unless I turn off the machine. still no display

Do you think it's a faulty card or its something to do with Vbios maybe?

    Thanks

Yes, the card is faulty :(
It’s not a problem with the vBios, it’s the card itself..
You have to speak again with the seller about returning the card, although it’s questionable if he will accept it back..
    Sorry, mate.. :(

Ok, I will get in touch with the seller again to request a refund or a replacement and return the defective faulty card.

The seller has been very helpful in the past bought quite a few parts from him and is happy to accept the card back.

I will let you know what happens

    Thanks

    Hello,

Please, can you advise if the below card is ok to buy for my Hp EliteBook 8770w? I have returned the faulty one but now need to buy a new one that works.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Please see below link on eBay or can find one that ok to buy?

I forgot to mention that I install a Gtx 675m in the Hp laptop and it works fine so I think the 980m was definitely faulty.

    Though I let know

Yes, this one is Clevo card (previous one was Dell card), should work on your 8770W without any hassles. Go ahead and buy it, just don’t forget to remove the Clevo’s X-Bracket and use your original one from HP’s Quadro.
Also tomorrow will send you pics for how to properly arrange the thermal pads on the new 980m.

    Hi,
    I have a similar problem. I own a 8770w + 3840qm + K4000m + 176C (U3E1) / KBC Version 50.1A motherboard. I bought a new K5100m and, after installing it, i get a black screen.

You have HP vBios on the card - it won't work with 8770W.
You need to reflash it with Dell's vBios.

Hi Mirage! Thanks for the prompt reply.

    However I'm too ignorant, maybe.
So, if I understood correctly, I have to flash the card itself? How? If my laptop doesn't accept it?
Which Dell's vBIOS. I read about it before, but I couldn't find it neither how to used it.

Where did you buy it from?
Can’t you ask the seller to do it for you?
Do you have some PC store near your place where they sell second hand laptops?
The best way for you is to find any Alienware laptop (with mxm-b slot) or dell M6600/M6700.
You need 17” laptop as the smaller size doesn’t offer mxm-b, but mxm-a which in your case is not a way to go...

In terms of procedure, what do I need to flash it? Any special software?

Hi if is same as k5100m then sorry to say: is gap size!. not size of thermal pad. (I lost flew original. they stick together and break when try to "unstick"). I use blue arctic (ugly hard - don't buy it!!!). Decide to test it: Use thermal past on radiator (little bit, paint it with it) and put 1.5mm pad to that shiny stainless steel thinks on back of card and instal radiator.... and disassembly... and is not touching !!! you need push radiator on back to force it touching. then i start investigate and i see original soft pad have 2mm in that place. My advise use soft as original thermal pad and add little bit when You stick it. - like 2 cm long pad "compress" to 1.6cm it give You extra 0.x mm in thickness. or use one size thicker if very soft.
