I have an HP 2710 tablet. When I plug it in, the charge light does not come on the computer, nor will it charge the battery at all. Haven't used it in ages (old work computer) and thought I'd boot it up.

Is it possible at all that it's a software issue? Or is it more than likely a motherboard replacement required (in which case it's garbage)?

    Thanks!

Probably battery went totally empty and died.

But wouldn't you think the laptop would at least still "try" to charge it? Ie, that the charge light on the laptop would be lit?

Plug it in, keep installing & removing the battery several times 10+, give the laptop a few seconds with the battery installed prior to removing it.
If the battery drained 100% dead, the internal ic chip within the battery cannot provide the laptop info about its state of condition.

Each time you install the battery, the laptop will trickle a small short charge and wait for a reply back from the battery.
    Then it stops that trickle.
Therefore repeating the installation of the battery keeps giving the battery an ever so small charge.
At some point it just may start to take a charge like normal once the ic can report.

Sometimes just plugging in and unplugging the ac charger cable will do the same

Or you can find the pin-out of the battery and then force a small charge into it via a wall-wart adapter.

I have rescued many stored batteries this way.

That laptop should start fine without the battery installed.
Have you tried this with only the HP power adapter?

Some times I wish i never sold my 2710

Thanks, will give that a go. Why do you wish you never sold your 2710? I find the hard drive in particular quite limiting in how slow it is! Hard to find a 1.8" drive faster than 4200rpm if they even exist, and the SSD drives in that size are super expensive!

BTW, tried this about 20 times with no luck. The little blue charger light comes on for about 3 to 4 seconds, then just shuts down.

What did you mean by the "wall-wart" adaptor?

I'm willing to buy a new battery for this thing (prob off of ebay), but don't want to bother if it is in fact the mother board...

First you must be very careful if you try to force charge the battery, you DO NOT WANT TO SHORT-OUT ANY Lithium ion cells as they can EXPLODE!
If you can find the connector pinout to the battery, you can take a 6-9 volt dc wall-wart and cut the plug end off that and apply the wires to the right contacts on the battery to force in a bit of a charge.
THIS IS NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY AS THERE ARE DANGERS IF NOT DONE RIGHT.
May be best to purchase a replacement battery.
Does the laptop power on ok with the battery removed?

What i mis the most is the design style and feel of the 2710
    I replaced it with a thinkpad x200t

Yes that 4200rpm drive has its limitations.

Hmmm ... that whole "explode" thing has me thinking maybe I won't bother trying that method!

I do like the design/feel of the thing, some days wish it had a track pad but I'm used to the ball mouse and it's actually easier to use I find.

If the battery works, I may see if I can pick up a used SSD drive to speed it up. I don't require any graphics cards (don't play games on it) and the speed is ample with the 4 gigs of ram for Microsoft Office and Internet/mail which is all I really use it for.

ZIF SSDs have had a dramatic fall in price. Consider can get a 64GB 1.8" SuperTalet ZT2 for US$146. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...-1-8-zif-pata-ssds-available.html#post6861746 .

Interesting. Bought a new battery for the laptop. Has worked since until the other day. Had left the laptop uncharged for about a week, and now this battery has the same issue, won't charge.

Guess I should scrap the laptop at this point which is unfortunate, have grown to like the ergonomics/feel of it.
