Hi,
I got myself an 8440p, which would be a quite nice notebook, if it wasn't for the C4 whine.
Not sure whether I am especially sensitive or whether my model is extra loud but its driving me mad.
Currently I am fighting with HP support and so far got blocked with "functions as intended".
I am using Win7 64bit, RMclock doesn't work for me, it doesn't recognize the CPU/board, guess its just too old.
I know that Lenovo has an option in the BIOS and their energy manager application to disable C4, which would help, but HP doesn't, at least I did not find a way.
I don't care for the 1W or so increased power consumption if it just would be silent.
Anyone of you guys having the same issue and some solution for this?
Michael

maybe there is a tool to set the power states, like RightMark? (it is old so you need to find something newer)

Yes, RMclock would be a solution but it doesn't work anymore on current Notebooks such as the 8440p.
In Linux its easy, there is a kernel parameter to disable C4 state, but in Win7 I had no luck so far. -
I have a brand new dm4-1160us with a CPU whine issue... I tried exchanging the laptop, but the 2nd one makes the same exact noise. I've been researching this problem all week, and this is the first "fix" I've come across that had any impact on the problem without causing excessive heat/fan noise. The whine is almost completely inaudible now. Check it out below:

Great stuff, thanks a lot! That's a goldmine of hidden settings.
It works quite well for me. The notebook is much more quiet now. At last a solution to this incredibly annoying problem.
Nevertheless I will try to understand what the changed values actually do change in detail
Thanks again,

Well, I gotta say that my Probook is now officially whine-free. The above mentioned fix helped a lot, but I was able to eliminate the whine completely by additionally tweaking the following:
Proc. idle promote threshold = 95% - I've changed this to 100% and my laptop is silent ever since. I've set all the other settings as mentioned in the link above, but this additional tweak killed the whine completely.
Thanks a lot, that sound was driving me crazy. I've changed 3 brand new laptops with core i5 processors (two Toshiba laptops and now Probook 6550b), and ALL THREE of them had the CPU whine (although the Probook was the quietest, but still annoying). Obviously a verry common issue for the iCore series... and for us with a sensitive hearing.
This has solved my problem, I'm happy now, I hope it'll stay silent.
cheers
