I just purchased a refurbished hp 8470p Elitebook. I'd like to reinstall the OS (Windows 7 Professional) on a SSD I purchased separately (the notebook came with a HDD which works fine but I'd prefer the SSD for durability - plus I like clean OS installs).
After booting up the computer for the first time, I made a USB recovery stick using the recovery software. The recovery stick shows just under 7 GB and is labeled "recovery" so I believe the software created a valid recovery stick.
The problem is that when I remove the HDD and install the SSD, and boot up in that configuration with the recovery stick in place (in one of the USB 2 slots), the computer will not recognize the USB stick and initiate recovery from it. The setup appears to be in UEFI even though the system is in Windows 7. When I have the HDD in place, the setup appears different and it appears that I can enable legacy boot - can/should I do that, but could I possibly mess up the HDD boot that way, if it was configured to boot under UEFI.
I'm used to the Dell Precision setup, which has the BIOS separate from the hard drive, and you can have the HDD out and still boot into a workable BIOS. In this hp 8470p, without a HDD installed, the only BIOS options I can see are to perform a memory check or HDD check.
    Thanks!
