Hello guys, long time reader, first time poster...

I recently acquired my 8510w (WUXGA matte + FX 570M) from my brother, who purchased the laptop new in 2006. I absolutely love it, as it does everything I need to work, and much more.

The only complaint I have is the matte LCD and it's brightness (or lack thereof) as it will not get as bright as it did when he first bought it. It's been gently used and treated, never dropped or abused, but I find myself having to constantly adjust the gamma from the nvidia control panel to be able to see properly, even in a pitch dark room.

Now I also game, and a lower resolution than WUXGA would be ideal for newer games for it's better frame rates, however I haven't been able to find a definitive answer regarding lower resolution LCD's and their compatibility with this laptop.

Would I be capable of *downgrading* to the WSXGA+ Glossy LCD on this laptop? Would the current inverter work with the new LCD? Would you recommend buying a new inverter, whether I purchase another WUXGA or WSXGA+? If so, would anyone happen to have a part number that would be compatible with either resolution?

I apologize if I am duplicating any previous posts or asking too many questions, as I was only able to locate a single thread close to my question that didn't have any specifics regarding the inverter. I work in the I.T. industry and have been upgrading laptops for the better part of a decade, but a laptop of this caliber has never crossed my path before.

Here is the LCD I've been looking at buying:

    15.4" WSXGA+ LCD Screen Glossy FOR COMPAQ 8510P 8510W | eBay

If I can only replace it with a WUXGA LCD, here is the glossy one I'll buy:

HP Compaq 8510W Laptop LCD Screen 15.4 WUXGA(1920x1200) Glossy

    Thanks in advance!

either of those screens should be fine.

When you are ready to install, ensure afterwards you reinstall your chipset driver (the intel inf series 945, 4,5,6 chipest thing) and your quick launch buttons.

The 8510w was a robust machine, my old girl is still going strong.

Good luck on your upgrade :)

(i would also acquire a new inverter, as it probably will end up dying on you with a new screen. it *may* be fine, but i wouldn't risk it to be honest, 2006 is a long time to be running!)

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

Now the only thing I am concerned about is the eBay ad's for some of these LCD's, in that they mention on multiple occasions that you *have* to match the screen resolution when replacing, and that there is a potential it would not work due to pin differences, both in numbers and locations, that could prevent this from working.

Does this laptop and it's configuration, or all 8510w's, take a 30-pin LCD?

Any update? What did you decide to buy, and how did the installation go? Any tips for those of us who want to change screens on our old 8510's?

Hey, sorry for the delay, I actually forgot about this thread altogether :)

After determining what was the cheapest fix, I decided to buy a new inverter on eBay (The $5 one) to make sure it would fit my current LCD, and viola! No more issues, and all the burn spots on my LCD went away. I had no idea the inverter would cause these issues, and I already had the matte WUXGA panel, so she's still kickin like new...

I know this is a really old thread that I started a LONG time ago, but I finally got around to replacing the LCD Screen in my 8510w. My Sister royally screwed her Vostro 1500 by overheating the GPU and frying the motherboard in one fell swoop, but the good news for me was that her Samsung WUXGA Glossy 15.4" LCD was in perfect condition and only 6 months old. Turns out, it had the same mounts and video input that the WUXGA Matte screen had in my 8510w.

30 minutes and a few beers later, the Glossy Samsung WUXGA Screen is installed and working without issue. It was pure luck that I had a few inverter extension cables laying around since it was about 3 inches too short to connect to the 8510w inverter.

My specific LCD is the Samsung SEC3155, and while it's had a lot of negative reviews from some of the Dell guys in the past, mine is absolutely brilliant and not a single issue.

Anyways, any of the Dell 15.4" screens appear to work in the 8510w without issue, even ones from the D830 on up to the Vostro 1500 as they have the same part compatibility numbers. I also had no issues with a BIOS Whitelist preventing my using an unsupported monitor as well, so the whitelist appears to apply only to WiFi and Video Cards.
