    Hi, everybody!

    I need your help!
I have HP 8540p (Dual Core i5) and I know it support only 8GB RAM but I want to extend it to 16 GB (2x8GB). So, I would like to ask you, does anybody did it? And is it possible at all?

    Thanks!

According to ark.intel.com, all the i5 processors - both 1st and 2nd generation - are capable of handling 16GB of RAM. I have 16GB in my ProBook with a 2nd generation i3 and it works like a charm.

    Thank you!
And could you specify your chipset, how many memory slots and memory profile (4x4GB, 2x8Gb) do you have.
    Thanks again.

That would be 2x8GB since only i7 models have 4 slots for ram in the first place and I remember someone here tested, replaced i7 cpu with i5 and only two slots would work.

Actually I know about models with i7 and 4 slots of memory (it uses the profile 4x4GB) and about limitations of 8GB with i5 (2 memory slot = 2x4GB profile).
But I would like to know about the practical aspects of using the profile of RAM 2x8GB with HP 8540p.
To buy or not to buy 2x8GB RAM for my laptop, that is the question.

    Thanks.

Do you need 2x8GB? That's the real question.

Sorry, but we are not discussing here how many RAM I need.
And I'll be very grateful if you could give me answers to technical questions that I asked in previous posts.

May be someone tested 8GB single module (1x8GB profile) with 8540p ?

    Thank you.

Then what is the following question?

If you need 16GB of RAM, then yes, you should buy 2x8GB. If you don't need 16GB of RAM, why spend the money since you aren't going to see a benefit for most tasks.

I need a lot of RAM and please, let's stop discussing how much memory I need to.
There is one thing I would like to know. Can the HP 8540p recognize 8GB memory by a single module? If this happens, so there is a good chance it can recognize and 2x8GB.

So, one more time, may be someone has tested 8GB single module (1x8GB profile) with 8540p ?

    Thanks.

Yeah, I saw review and also I read HP documentations to 8540p.
    From official web-site:
"HP EliteBook 8540p Notebook PC - Overview":
    Memory
    Standard : DDR3 PC3-10600 SDRAM (1333 MHz)* Two SODIMM slots supporting dual-channel memory 1024MB, 2048MB, 3072MB, or 4096MB

Maximum : Upgradeable to 8192MB with 4096MB SODIMMs in slots 1 and 2

As you can see there is nothing about 8Gb RAM (single module).

I repeat again and again, I don't want to hear any rumors I want only facts. And such facts can give only people who has tested 8GB RAM (SINGLE module).

Fact: According to INTEL, the 1st and 2nd generation i5 processors will take 16GB of RAM (2x8GB). I pointed this out in my first post.

Fact: I have an HP ProBook with an i3 that has 16GB of RAM (2x8GB). I know for a fact it works with 1x8GB, since I tested each memory module individually to make sure it worked. I know the ProBook isn't an EliteBook, but the principle is the same - HP may say it maxes out at 8GB of RAM, but the actual manufacturer of the chipset (Intel) says otherwise. If you like, I'll link the ark.intel.com page which shows the information regarding the i5 architecture.

Yes, I read and I know about i5, but also I asked you about other parts of your PC, like the chipset. Because the maximum supported memory size may be limited by other parts of the software or hardware your PC.
As I see this topic can be closed.
And if someone will be test 1x8Gb or 2x8GB memory with HP 8540p, please, let us know about your results.

Thank you for the facts and thanks to all for the help.

After digging around, it looks like the i5-580M which is the processor supported by the Mobile Intel QM57 chipset that is on the 8540p maxes out at 8GB of RAM. Sorry about that.
