I'm thinking about upgrading to 1920x1080, but want to make sure I'm looking at the right screen.
I did a bit of searching and here's what I came up with...

    - according to notebookcheck.net, the FHD screen used in the HP 8540w is an AU Optronics.
Review HP Elitebook 8540w Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

    - searching on ebay for a HP 8540w FHD screen, I came up with this part # B156HW01, which turns out to be made by AUO.
    HP 8540W 15.6" FHD LED RAW PANEL B156HW01 - eBay (item 330506468287 end time Jan-08-11 08:04:23 PST)

    - another auction for the same display part #
    AU OPTRONICS B156HW01 V.2 LAPTOP LCD SCREEN Full-HD - eBay (item 260662017201 end time Jan-06-11 13:29:23 PST)

So I guess what I'm asking is, if the owners of the FHD screen can confirm that this is the same part # if you have the AUO screen. Or, if you have the FHD screen, but a different manufacturer, can you share who makes it and what the part # is? Thanks.

    terrible lie,

Did you get your laptop upgraded? I have the same laptop as you and I want to upgrade to a FHD like yourself. If you did upgrade, what exact model did you end up getting? And where from? Any roadbumps along the way?

    Thanks!!

I think I am going to bite the bullet and give it a shot. I'll let you know my results after I try it out. I don't see why it wouldn't work. We both know that the video card can handle it, and the laptop is built to support it. I may get the v5 or something. Hopefully it is just a better revision for color and such.

I have little doubt that the one I linked will work, I'm just worried its some cheap ccfl lcd compatible screen.
I think the different version numbers are for different manufacturers, so the screw holes and plugs may need to be in specific areas. If that is the case, I would stick with v3

Just got my new screen! Works like a champ! Its a beauty! I would highly recommend doing it. Its super easy switch over. Since it is LED backlit, there is no inverter to fuss with or anything. Just screwed out the old one and unplugged the cable, and swapped in the new one.

This is the one that I bought:

    15.6" B156HW01 V.4 FHD LED Screen

Although the listing is for a V.4 screen, the one I got was a V.1. I e-mailed and asked them about it, and they said there isn't any difference. So I am not too worried about it since it is killer and has an awesome viewing angle compared to the HD+ screen.

It took about 2 and a half weeks to ship from the UK, but I would buy from them again. Very reputable.

Anyway, I hope my findings help you. I love it.

    EXCELLENT!
    thank you for the confirmation

    edit:
after digging around for some more info on these AUO B156HW01 screens, I found a ton of info on this forum. Basically from what I've read, the V.# doesn't seem to make a difference in fitment. Instead, they have different properties and the V.4 seems to be the favorite, although I actually preferred the V.1. Other members have mentioned that the V.4 needs some calibrating to get a better comparison. A couple people have confirmed that the HP 8540w comes with the V.3 and it seems to be the least bright of all at around 225 nit and the others above 250 nit. Regardless, every one of these AUO B156HW01 screens seem to be of above average quality.

Also, there is a seller of these screens on this forum, here's the thread.

Sorry jdye06, I know it's of no use to you at this point but perhaps this will help others that are looking to upgrade.

    jdy,

I am wondering how changing the screen would change the max resolution in your display settings?
Right now it shows 1600x900, am I to assume that after I change the display with the one you bought, my display properties will show 1920x1080?

FYI, the B156HW01 V.4 is discontinued and sold out through most vendors, including mythlogic. Jdy06, that sort of explains why your seller sent you a V.1 instead.
I was going to just purchase the V.1, but since mythlogic never got back to me, I decided to give this one a shot... hopefully they don't send me a different version. I will confirm when it arrives.
    AUO B156HW01 V.4 15.6" LED WUXGA SCREEN FOR LENOVO W510 - eBay (item 250771582226 end time Mar-12-11 07:49:52 PST)

Seems to be promising, no mention of "compatible" screens and has a zero dead pixel policy. Also slightly cheaper than what jdy06 posted.
