Hi, I have an HP 8570w with the latest bios (version 68IAV F.43 10/08/2013) and recently I have bought an NVIDIA Quadro K2100M (N15P-Q3-A1) but when I have installed that graphics card into my HP 8570w the display did not work, it remained black.
I have returned the graphic card to the seller who said to me that I had to flash the vbios of the graphic card to get it works with my 8570w (he sent to me the bios file, but I did not know how to flash it).
Does your k2100m work on your notebook? If yes, with which version of vbios?

Did you manage to replace your cpu with the 3920xm without any fuss? I ask because some people have mentioned that the different motherboards for the dual core 8770w could pose an issue. Is it just a matter of swapping the heatsink?

    Hi there,

I just got my 8760w and of coruse it doesn't match the description on ebay (yay, such surprize, very wow, much nice, so seller).

Anyways I bought it for photo and video editing, so I need a DC display and 4 dimm slots in any case. Since the guy obviously just smooshed in a quad-core cpu on the dual-core mdoel board it doesn't have the extra 2 dimm slots on the upper side (below the keyboard) either, so I'm swapping the mobo too. What concerns me are a few things:
    - I find only two spare part numbers for the mobo - for a quad and for a dual-core cpu, but nobody mentions the DC display ( http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c02863770 ) is there anytyhing I'm missing here?
    - I found on a couple fo pages, that the DC displays have 50-pin connectors and not 40 LVDS ones like the other 2-3 displays, ie is the mobo for a DC model the same as the one for non-DC (ie do all quad-core mobos have 50-pin connectors, or what I've read on the internet about the 40 vs 50-pin connectors is BS? for an ex. http://www.panelook.com/LP173WF3-SLB4_LG Display_17.3_LCM_overview_22396.html )
    - I found a couple fo retailers selling lp173wf3-slb1/2/3/4 - is this the right display? I found on a copuple of forums that this was the right model, however my concern is again the pin count (e.g. http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/17-3-led-LP173WF3-SLB4_60378749120.html ).

Appreciate your time to read and reply.

    Cheers,
    V

Ouch, that hurts. That's why I usually ask for the serial and check it in the partsurfer to see what the original config was. Anyway, there's no special board for the DreamColor, since all displays share the same connector, they are just wired differently. The connector has both LVDS and DP lanes (the DC uses DP). As for the DreamColor upgrade, you'll need more than just the display, you'll also need motherboard to color board cable, color board (stores the color data, translates the DP input to LVDS output, as the panel is LVDS) and color board to display cable. I doubt that you'll be able to source the cables and the color board is popping out from time to time, but they price it ridiculously most of the time. Better get a system that comes with the DreamColor. The other way is to get the whole panel assembly, but most likely you don't want to know the price on these things.

BTW Is your CPU heat-sink two or one pipe? I hope (s)he at least put the two-pipe heat-sink, or you'll have problems with the temps.

@THE_DJ_MW - Should work no problems.

    Thanks for the reply triturbo.

Crap, seems like I'm pretty much boned...

On the other note - I'm fully aware of the ridiculous pricing on hp's parts for almost everything, which is pretty much the reason to go for a 8760w and not for a zbook g2 ;) In any case I guess I'm in the pit regardless what I do, so the only way out from here on is up.

Ok, so to sum it all up, I need:
    - the DC panel (either one of these two: Display assembly, 43.9 cm (17.3 in), FHD AG RGB LED UVWA Dream Color without webcam (not available with HP Mobile Broadband) (includes display panel cable, 3 WLAN antenna and cables, and 2 WWAN antenna and cables) 652518-001 / Display assembly, 43.9 cm (17.3 in), FHD AG RGB LED UVWA Dream Color with webcam (not available with HP Mobile Broadband) (includes display panel cable, 3 WLAN antenna and cables, and 2 WWAN antenna and cables) 652519-001 from the spare parts list or their LG equivalents LP173w3f-xxxx)
    - the color board (don't find it here on the spare parts list what should I look for?)
    - the color board to display cbl (don't find it either)
    - and color board to mobo cbl (same here)

Do I need anything else? Where are these components located usually - somewhere in the chassis as with an usual laptop, or they're in the lid assembly somewhere between the panel and the backlight for an instance? Also if I were to buy all these parts, what's up with the calibration of the monitor - wouldn't it be off? Wouldn't I need to calibrate it manually with a calibrator afterwards?

Now typing this I kinda start wondering whether it won't be cheaper to actually get a crappy 8760w with a dual core, but with a DC panel, or simply the whole display assembly, but then the question about the additional components remains, especially if they're located in the chassis and it's not likely to have them shipped with a lid+display assembly...

This is the last time I buy something like that from ebay without triple-checking it myself first....

    Cheers,
    V.

Well, 652519-001 and 652518-001 are the whole assemblies. You can browse the web and try to find a cheap source for them.

All of the parts are in the display assembly, so getting the assembly resolves your problem. The parts needed are not listed anywhere and again, most likely you wont be able to find them. There is an 8740w user ( @Lwerewolf ), who literary took apart his DreamColor to share the part numbers, but alas they were of no use - no source that sells them. Then comes the problem with the calibration, as you mentioned. Some 8740w came out of the factory uncalibrated, and when you don't have a system to check that one right away, you'll be sorry. Don't know how it is for 8760/8770w, but I guess there might be some panels in the wild that are uncalibrated as well. So yes, either get the complete assembly, or a DreamColor machine.

Ok, at least I know now what my options are...

Also the seller agreed to do a partial refund (120 bucks off of the 650 I paid), which is nice and would at least cover the replacement of my board with a quad core one in order to accommodate for the video editing load with a bit more ram.

Btw I had an asus k53 that fell and broke the mobo, so I basically just moved my ssd, data hdd and 2*8 ram from the one machine to the other, but now having an extra sata 3 slot that's empty I'm wondering whether I should swap my current evo 850 500gig ssd for a couple of intel dc s3500's in a raid 0 (I know about the lack of redundancy, but I want bigger throughput than the one I got with the evo). What would you advise me to do? I know the best way to figure out what to do is to do benchmarks of both configurations and compare cold numbers, but at least what should I expect? The evo gives about 85-93k iops, whilst the s3500's give 75k each, so both should give me abt 1.5x lower latencies and therefore quicker and snappier responsiveness, right?

P.S. I work professionally with servers in a datacenter and a couple of labs and I'm used with working with big arrays and SANs etc, but obviously RAID0 is not as common under this type of workload as 1,5,10,50 and 60, so I'm aware of the theoretical advantages of the different raid levels, however I've hardly played with our enterprise grade raid cards and HDDs/SSDs in raid 0. Does anybody see indeed this type of increased performance whenever one couple a couple of drives in raid 0, compared to a single drive?

    Cheers,
    V

Use two mSATA's in stripe for large consecutive read+writes (1TB+) and it makes a difference there, at least. Mostly hovers around 900 MB/s, but only with active cooling. Passive it'll drop to ~700 after half an hour or so.

There's difference indeed. I haven't tried personally, but numerous people had. Some say that the latency goes up as well, since this is a software RAID, not really a hardware one, so that's something to consider.

These cables are as good as nonexistent. If TaoBao ever becomes truly international, then yes. So far, not really an option, unless one has a Chinese friend. There are 8740w cables as well, but again, so what? I'm frustrated that I can't order from there, over the years I've found a lot of rare stuff there, that can't be found anywhere else and cheap too.

Wo, wo, wo hold on.... Are you telling me that this assembly (they ship to japan, where I'll be heading to in a couple of weeks anyways wooho) is all I need, well besides the panel obviously? If that's the case, I'm ordering one literally right away and if it's so straight forward to just hook everything up in the display assembly, I'll be upgrading to DC in like no time :) Do I need to just calibrate the display afterwards or it's not that straight forward...

About the SSDs - I'm asking about the s3500's cause I've got some of these lying around and I can simply swap mine with these, stripe em up and just migrate my install from the evo - I'd be good to go. And I'm thinking about it mostly because a) I'll get a lot more space (like 3x+) b) these are datacenter grade, i.e. they can take the continuous abuse of an array and c) I can use them virtually for free...

    Hello,
Is it possible to use the Dreamcolor board and cables from a 15" display on a 17" model? I found a cheap (well relatively) 15" display assembly and would just need the 17" panel to fit it into 8760W.

Not very sure, since obviously the display size is different (the connectors placement might be the same though), also the distance between the motherboard and color board might be different as well. If you decide to shoot, good luck!

@vlex_ - Yes, this is everything you'll need, as for the calibration I guess you'll need to calibrate it, since the color board is matched with a certain display. Getting mismatched pair (display and color board) might yield different results in color reproduction (not obligatory, but possible).

A spoiler alert - I found a taobao seller, who ships overseas and speaks somewhat english. I've ordered my decoder board and cables set and as soon as it arrives, I'll install it along with the SLB3 screen panel I bought additionally and let you know if everything works out right. If so, I'll post here contacts to the seller I bought my panel and my board from - this might turn out to be the holy grail for everybody trying to upgrade their non-DC laptops.

    Cheers,

I have read most of this thread will read it again later. but I keep seeing apparently contradictory information.

I have a 8770w. nice unit nearly maxed out. k4000m 4gb 32gb ram ssd web bl kbd etc.. etc.. REALLY freaking love this machine. but I SO want a dream color panel.

if I buy say an 8730w with a dream color panel will that have all the bits I need to put the panel into my 8770w and will it work? I thought I read 40pin versus 50pin then another post saying the MB connection is the same the decoder handles the 50pin portion then another post saying need a new mobo.

so what is the final word. can I take a dream panel screen and bits from an 8730w and put it into my 8770w. how far off will the fit be? I don't mind dremeling the bezel a bit and would really love to get 1200pixel vertical too on top of the DC color spectrum.

    thanks!

The 8730w DreamColor is 8bit TN - different than the 8740w and later 16:9 iterations. It means that it lacks the color board and the 10bit depth that is distinctive for every model afterwards. It is pretty rare as well, and especially getting a good example without display issues. Me and a friend looked at fitting the 8740w's 16:10 DreamColor into 8760w/8770w. We think that it might be possible, but haven't done any extensive research on the matter since he sold the 8760w. The camera might need to go.

Yes, this is one of the dc panels used for 8760w (and i think also for 8770w), but afaik it's not considered a dc-screen without the color board.

Although the panel has 40-pin lvds connector i can't tell you, whether it works without the board.

    Good luck!

There are newer eDP displays, but you'll need custom made cable for them, also I'm not sure whether or not 8770w has eDP (ZBook 17 does), or DP (8740w and 8760w) on the display cable. Most likely it drives the DreamColor through DP (the rest options use LVDS, the connector combines all necessarily lanes), like it was in the previous models and they switched to eDP only connector on ZBooks.

In one of the threads here, somebody was mentioned to have managed to connect an 8740w screen to an 8760w motherboard. Apparently worked - the connectors were even supposedly the same.. I'll just have to find the post somewhere.

Boy it's been hell of a few months... Ok, so here's what happened:

After getting my laptop from ebay for 650 bucks and figuring out it wasn't a DC as it was advertised, nor it was quad core, but rather a dual core with a quadcore cpu (as well as a bunch of other discrepancies), I got a refund of 120$, which was ok - the laptop is not bad, just not as advertised. So The grand total is 530USD for a non-DC full hd 8760w with a small sata2 ssd and 8 gigs of ram, which I quickly upgraded with the stuff I had from my asus that fell and broke, so I brought it up to 16 gigs of ram and samsung evo 850 500gig ssd and a second 1tb hard (later on I added an intel s3700 800gig ssd as a second ssd for video and photo editing cache). A while after that I got a backlit keyboard off of ebay for like 30 bucks or so, as well as got a quadcore board, that however turned out to be broken, so I ended up getting a refund.

Now we get to the interesting stuff - the (as of literally 15 minutes ago SUCCESSFUL DC-conversion):
I got an slb3 panel off of ali express for abt 185 bucks including shipping ( link), which I got quite quickly delivered to my address in Japan, however without the color board it was useless. Then I found a guy on TaoBao, who spoke decent english and was willing to send outside of china (yay!). So far so good, unfortunatelly though, I started talking with him a few days before the chinese new year, so after we chatted over the online chat of taobao for a few days, he calculated a price of 580RMB for the board and both cables including shipping (which is abt 90US dollars according to google) ( link). So we agreed that he'd send it just after the chinese new year, because the post office was on holiday break and there was no way to ship it any quicker. Ok - his promise was to send it on 20th of February (which was ok, because it was supposed to arrive before I left Japan on 26th). Unfortunately he delayed the shipment for a while and I had to ask him continuously what's going on with the board. At last on 7th-8th of March he confirmed he got his hands on the board (more details about it in a sec), so he promised to send it on the very same day (which he did not). On 11th I finally got confirmation on taobao, that the parcel was sent with a tracking number, that returned no results. On 17th I got really pissed, cause he kept promising he sent it and it's on its way, that I just needed to wait (which given the fact I was pissed on the other chinese dude I bought the broken mobo from, wasn't promising). Boy, did I get surprised by a call from DHL (!) that there's a package addressed to me today at work. I got it and it looked new (which was nice, but more details about this in a sec), so the first thing I did after getting home was to install the board and replace the panel and it worked. I finally see and understand why the DC would make a laptop cost double. The colors, the viewing angles, the contrast, the sharpness... Just WOW!

So about the grape882008 guy was a bit slow in sending the board, which was frustrating, especially giving the bad experience I've just had with the board, BUT I have never been happier to be proven wrong - he did indeed an express delivery with DHL, which was a nice touch. He also showed me the DC assemblies he has gotten (I think abt 100 pcs total) that he had for sale and was selling for the equivalent of 200$, so if anyone wants to upgrade, upgrading over swapping the whole assembly would save you a lot of nerves and time (also as my case proves would be cheaper for you). The guy was positive he'd sell to others I recommend him to, so if you're fine with may be waiting for a while longer (which I give him the benefit of the doubt wasn't entirely his fault), you should be fine.

So yeah - that's how I got a DC 8760w for 805 bucks and I definitely will see to upgrade the board and the ram to 32 gig, so I make it a real beast :)

Here're a few pics (may be not really representative, but that's what the camera of my htc one m7 can provide):
    Non-DC:
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

    And DC:
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

P.S. For what it's worth I'm quite sure the camera of the phone I shot these with isn't calibrated, so the color representation would suck, but still it'd be enough to see the difference. Now I only need to figure out how to get my x-rite colormunky to work on win 8.1, and how to get my brightness control to work in win. :)

To upgrade from non-dc to DC I need motherboard, connectors and back cover. So it this case is really not worthwhile.

Not true at all - you need an lcd panel and a colorboard with cables. Whether it's worth it or not depends on whether you do any color sensitive type of workload on yoyr laptop like photo or video editing. If so, it's quite worth it, cause i couldn't find a dc model under the 1k$ mark, and i came up just above the 800 bucks one. ;)

But now I have non-dc with 40 pins connector, to connect dc with 50 pins I need another motherboard. Or am I to stupid for this. So as you wrote I need only dc panel and display connector with 40 pins?

Then you're right in my shoes from 3 months ago :) Read the long post above and may be a couple of pages back too. It's not that you're stupid, it's just kinda counter intuitive - the mobo has a 40pin lvds connector, then it goes to a color board, which translates the 24-bit (8bpc) 40pin lvds signal into 30-bit (10bpc) 50pin display port one (the shady looking board on the picture above - the one that has something that looks like taken out of an alien spaceship :D). Honestly this is the first time I see or hear there's an additional color board like this and was completely puzzled, but then I managed to get one from taobao (which is a chinese site, and allegedly the only one that sells them, almost exclusively within china) and a panel off of ali express (links for both are embedded above) and did the upgrade. The good news is, that the guy who sold me the color board sells entire brand new screen assemblies, that you can basically get and swap your entire laptop screen against and simply plug the 40-pin lvds connector, wifi antennas and what not to your existing mobo and get a complete new DC screen with as little as like 15 screws to take out and put back in. The whole joy costs somewhere around $200, without shipping, which in my case was another 80RMB(or abt 12 bucks). :)

Hope that clears things up a bit.

edit: hmm, I now see you've got a 8770w - not sure yours uses SLB3 panel as the 8760w does. May be someone else would be able to tell ya whether these assembleis would work for you (I'm 90% certain they would, but still...) Cheers!

I found LG Display LP173WF3-SLB3 and connectors for DC as you have above. But I am only matter if my motherboard is enough for this. I can have max 16gb o ram. As far I remember DC was with 32gb motherboards.

Mine is a 2-dimm slot one too - the only difference is, that the dual-core model doesn't have the two additional slots soldered, where the quad-core one does. There is no other difference in the two boards (at least none I could find upon close inspection), so to answer your question: yes, the 2-slot board you have can drive the DC screen.

I ordered sbl3 dc and stdp8028 with connetors and tape. Wish me luck.
To put dc stuff you only work with screen panel and nothing else or you need stick or put into motherboard?

You need to take your laptop completely apart - you replace the cable sticking into your motherboard AND swap stuff from within the screen assembly. So basically you need to take off your palm rest, so you access all cables, you might need to remove the WIFI and BT antennas, because they go through the same aluminium wiring tube that the LVDS cable for the monitor fits in, so it'll probably make your life easier to first remove the entire screen assembly, then take the assembly apart, install the color board , new panel and all respective cables and then put it all back together reversing the order.

    Good luck! :)

I read that are not the same. And where should put this cable on the screen?

At one point I had the schematics of both 8760w and 8770w. Can't find them now, to compare if they match 100% (I think they did, but it was quite some time ago when I looked at them) and the task of this extra cable. I think that it could be for the camera or microphones, not sure, but pretty sure that it's not display related.

Removed pin 18 from both side and no working black screen. You can hear display at back you can see it lights. So what should I do?

Why you have removed a pin?

Because the cables are not the same. 8760W got ALS pin, 8770w doesn't. So I removed that pin on the left and right.

What do you mean left and right? Left and right on the motherboard connector, ot left - motherboard and right - color board. If you mean the left and the right side of the connector, you've removed some other important wire as well. Maybe this is the reason for not working.

The ALS wire is for the Ambient Light Sensor. If there was a problem of it missing, you would've been lacking or having issues with the back-light and not the picture. I don't think that this pin would be a problem anyway, since on the 8770w it is left unconnected. I think that your problem is elsewhere.

Do you have ALS? Maybe you have to plug that extra cable you pointed at, into the ALS board. Then again you would've had back-light issues and not display/picture.

Or maybe I misunderstood and I should removed only pin 18 from one side.

I removed them both. On the pictures down.

As you said that means I removed unnecessary second pin and I destroyed the cable. :/

I put back one pin but still same story or I put in wrong side.

Yes, only one pin should be removed, as only one pin is pin 18, there's no second. As for putting one pin back, are you sure that you put the right pin on the right place?

There should be some kind of designation on the motherboard, which is the first pin and then the 10th or something like that. They might go odd on one side and even on the other. Examine the motherboard connector closely.

I checked it and couldn't find. It sucks. :D Time to give up. Buying cable for 8770w dreamcolor is like won 1 million.

I removed from another side and previous one put back. Still no results. I think it needs lvds cable strict for 8770w.

I contacted grape882008 from taobao today to get full DC2 screen (with panel and cables) for my 8570w and he said he will look it up. He even remembered vlex_. So I will write if I get positive deal with him :)
