I am trying to upgrade my 8770w's LCD to a Dreamcolor one, and I have bought a decoder board (STDP8028) along with the DC cable, and a LP173WF3-SLB4 screen. I have the laptop taken apart to install all the parts but I'm having trouble understanding how the cabling should work. I'm pretty sure the DC cable connects to the LCD and the decoder/color board, and the other cable connects to the motherboard and another (50-pin?) connector on the color board.

What I'm having a problem with is that the original motherboard/display cable is a 40-pin connector, so I'm not sure if I need some kind of 40-pin to 50-pin adapter or what. Given the past posts on this site, I thought I had everything I need, but that is apparently not so. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance

You need different cable to the motherboard.

    Kamilo,
Thanks for your reply. I've since realized that, and I'm now a proud owner of a DC2 8770w :)

One question though, would you happen to be aware of a buzzing noise coming from a DC2 screen? I have to say it's bugging me.

    Hi oyasumi,

What cable did you need to connect the screen to the motherboard?

I have a non-dreamcolor version of the 8770w, but the monitor connection on the motherboard is a 50 pin. I assume only 40 of those pins are actually in use with my current monitor, and it is likely that the wires for the last 10 pins are probably also not present in the cable.

You need to buy another cable. There’s one on taobao that you can buy for about ~25

    @oyasumi

Since you're here and active, I'd like to pick your brain real quick.

According to Panelook, the LP173WF3-SLB4 is a LVDS interface 40pin monitor.

The decoder board you said you found, the STDP8028 has a datasheet, here: https://datasheet.octopart.com/STDP8028-AB-STMicroelectronics-datasheet-16348559.pdf

Forgive me, I'm new at this, but from what I understand, this takes DP/HDMI/DVI *input* and converts it out to LVDS output. It supports a maximum output of WUXGA (1920x1200) @606320

I am super confused though, because I thought the motherboard was only capable of LVDS based output.

How did you get this to work? Did you build a converter board using this chip? Did the chip come on a converter board already with the correct pinouts?

    I had a regular HP 8770w HD + screen. I recently bought a LP173WF3-SLB2 display, a decoder board, cables p / n 6017B0308401 and p / n 6017B0352401 on taobao. At the moment, everything is installed and works fine.

Could you share the links to the board and cables you found on taobao?

Taobao sellers usually do not ship overseas, only inside China. Therefore, I used an intermediary company that combines the parcels in the warehouse, and then sends them abroad http://www.youcanbuy.ru/delivery/
One caveat. I could not pay for their services with a Visa card, payment did not go through. Not sure why. Therefore, I paid via webmoney. Everything went perfectly . Try making a test deposit a small amount first.

As far as the decoder board is concerned, was wondering if the following will be compatible with the 8770w:

    https://www.pchub.com/hp-elitebook-8540w-series-sub-various-board-ls-495bp-decoder-board-p76085

It is for the 8540w series, but post #3308 in this thread says that it is the same decoder board that the 8740w uses, and I have seen other posts that state that the 8740w, 8760w, and the 8770w have the same connections for the panels. Appreciate any feedback on this.

I have been trying to go the taoboa route to source the parts but it is not easy!

If there is a recommended method for US buyers to successfully order all the these parts from taoboa.com please let me know. Thanks!

Well scratch that. Tried to order from pchub.com and it is not even in stock. So looks like taobao is the only option. On that note, I have been doing further research on the best way for a foreigner to use taobao and found a Taobao agent called BHINER. Similar to the youcanbuy.ru that Saburo_Tokugawa mentioned above. There are many other Taobao agents out there to choose from, it just depends on what your needs are as far as payment types, holding duration, support for customers from your country, fees, etc. but BHINER is the one I am looking into right now.

Well don't I feel like a horses rear posterior! Made my previous statements in regards to taobao and taobao agensts because I could hardly find any hits on it via the forum search. Then realized I was spelling taobao incorrectly searching for "taoboa" instead o_O. So apparently there is plenty of info in the forums if you are spelling it correctly :D

Still on the hunt for that decoder board, decoding board, color board, decryption board, or any other name it may go by on "taobao"
