Hi there, I have just got a 2530p that has a Smart Card reader in the Expresss Slot. Anyone know how to remove this and if it's possible to then use the express slot.

    Cheers,

    Tim

Yum, mine arrived in under a week from when I ordered it. First impressions:

-fair to good build quality, superior durability. Aluminum shell inspires confidence while minor gaps (<0.5mm) or steps between panels leave a bit to be desired. Compared to a thinkpad, this notebook will show wear more easily, but it'll stand well against impacts.
-a bit thick, but no more than I expected. Considering that it sports room to house two hard drives, I can deal with this just fine.
-good keyboard for an ultraportable, though it can't hold a candle to a thinkpad's. I'm still satisfied though.
-noisier than I hoped for, but then again this is my first notebook in a while that doesn't use a SSD. It appears that the 2530p has two fans, with one always on and the second triggered only by higher temperatures.
-very responsive touchpad, and while this is heresy, I like the trackpoint on this elitebook more than the one on my thinkpad.
-quicklaunch touch sensitive buttons are nice, rather responsive from my experiences so far, and classy looking.

This notebook wasn't cheap, and it certainly doesn't look or feel cheap either. I'm happy with this purchase so far, and hope to max it out once the funds and Windows 7 (TRIM please) arrives.

Great news. Sounds like you are pleased with your purchase. Now that you have one, perhaps could do some reporting of its:

1/ Battery life? Lowest idle power consumption measured with battstat with wifi on and lowest brightness would give it the absolute longest battery life possible with virtually very light usage. Also, what is the average battery life using batterybar (it stores historic data so is VERY accurate).

If you know a T400s owner, would be great to get side-by-side photos for visual comparison.

Hmmm, the touch controlled volume slider is making me hate life. I'm using XP at this moment, perhaps it runs better under Vista? I've heard from others that the controls aren't a problem, but I hadn't checked what OS they were using.

Slide and hold. I hated the volume control on my 6930p until I figured that out.

I bet you were thinking that a T400/T400s would have a simpler volume control, more consistent panel fit and a better keyboard (with the T60 keyboard option). It will definitely be quieter.

Its not too late to return your HP!

Hey guys, just bought a 2530p although it only arrives next week.

    Quick Specs:

    - Intel® Core™ 2 Duo LV Processor SL9400 (1.86 GHz, 6 MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz FSB)
    - 3 cell battery
    - No optical drive (3 usb's)
    - 160gb 7200 rpm
    - 2gb DDR2 SDRAM

    Questions:

    - Is the 9-cell battery much larger and heavier than the 6-cell one? The 6-cell should be wnough for me.
    - Thinking about installing the OS on a SSD and using the HDD for storage. What do I need to buy?
    - I want to upgrade to 4GB. Do the RAM units have to be the same brand? Do I have to buy only a 2gb or do I have to put in 2 new 2GB modules?

    2530P 1.8" SATA connector

If purchased a 2.5" model and didn't receive it
    1. HP P/N 495026-001 US$16: Primary hard drive connector board (required for installation of primary hard drive)
    2. OR newmodeus' $29.95US 1.8" SATA Hard drive caddy / bracket kit for HP_Elitebook_2530p as shown on the right.

You have 2 RAM slots. So check if you get 1x2GB stick or 2x1GB sticks. If the former, then 2GB + another 2GB would get you 4GB. If the latter AND you are running a 32-bit OS, would suggest just remove 1GB module and buy another 2GB. 32bit OS doesn't use > 3GB.

Thanks, I'm going to run W7 maybe 64bit because of the 3.5gb limit of 32bit.

Those threads on secondary hdd's are really helpful, thanks.

What's everyone's thoughts on the 2530p keyboard? For some reason it seems louder than the keyboard on my 2510p and the keys seem a bit looser. I've got two 2530p keyboards and they are both the same so I'm assuming that's normal.

This thing is awesome with Windows 7 x64 and 6 gigs of ram.

The keyboard indeed has a bit of a high pitched clack on them, but they're reasonably quiet when compared to the trampolines found on consumer lines.

Is anyone running Windows 7? Mine seems to freak out while returning from standby and chooses to present a blank black screen, while all the LED indicators are on.

I'm running Windows 7 on mine, but I don't use standby. I'll have to test it and see if I have the same issue.

Edit: I just tested sleep with my 2530p both on AC and Battery and didn't have any problem... I suspect maybe you have a driver that needs updating.

Poop. Just finished getting my Windows XP and Ubuntu partitions up to speed again, hooray more OS busywork.

I'll go over my drivers and see if that fixes it.

I just bought a 2530p laptop. But unfortunately it's not in english.
So I changed the keyboard. And reinstalled the os.
now the recovery function is not working although I still can see the recovery function.
So if anyone keep the recovery of the original hard disk, can you send me a copy.
    My laptop's specs: CPU 1.86,RAM 2Gb,120G,AGN,WWLAN...
    thank you

I'm looking at buying a 2530p from the HP Biz Outlet. If I get a model with SSD and optical, can i replace the DVDRW with a 2.5" HD and boot from it? Also does it support hardware VT in the BIOS? TIA

I just purchased the SU9300 2530p from Circuit City (really TigerDirect). I know its the lowest end model, but $670 with no tax or shipping and $100 Bing cashback seemed like a decent deal, and my current Acer is going to die anytime now. I take my notebook around the world with me, and the Elitebook 2530p seems to have a good combo of portability and functionality. I also like that its brand new with a 3yr warranty and I can get a free upgrade of Win7 Pro. I have a spare 1gb module so I can immediately upgrade to 2gb. I do have some more questions:
Is there a solution for better video? DIY Vidock won't work for me since I plan to max out the RAM. If not, I could settle for DVI-out. Is DVI supported with a docking station like the HP USB one?

I want to put my 2.5" HD or an SSD in the optical drive bay. Is hot-swap between drive and DVD supported in Win7? Between HP and the newmodeus, is one better than the other? TIA

Yes - use the hotswap! system tray app.

Newmodeus informed me their caddy has the same faceplate/chassis, with some internal parts that are different. If unsure, there's a genuine one on ebay for US$67. See here.

Hi! I am new to the forum. I was wondering if anyone has Linux installed in the 2530p. I tried a Fedora live usb and it wont boot. Tried openSUSE 11.2 usb but it failed to boot too. In general Whats the most compatible Linux distro for the 2530p (Out of the box)? I was leaning to openSUSE since the laptop is "SLED certified"

I've had difficulty booting from any usb based linux distro on this laptop. If you install to the hardware just about any of them will work properly.

Do you guys enable or disable "Fan always on when under AC power"? I was wondering how risky is to change temperature/fan speed profiles in the bios. With the fan option in the bios the computer stays very cool but its noisy and I can´t boot my linux usb flashdribe. Without it I fell it gets warm but i dont know if its ok or if I am getting paranoid about the cpu temps. My cpu cores idle at 50 °C or so, is that temp ok, can you guys post your average iddle and load temps?

I disabled the "Fan always on when under AC power" option in BIOS, but I almost never run the system off of AC power alone. I can tell you that the mobile CPUs can take the heat, and the Intel CPUs will throttle at the critical temp (100C for most mobile processors) to prevent damage.

That said, on battery, I idle at 37-43C and load at up to 62-65C, depending on the ambient temp. This is with the CPU undervolted to 0.9875V. At stock (~1.15V), temps average 5C higher. The HDD stays very cool though, and I have never seen temps over 40C even under full CPU load. I am sure it could get higher with intense I/O activity, but outside of initial OS setup, that is a rare occurrence.

Just for reference, I have a fanless ITX system that uses a Core Duo T2300, and I have seen that CPU hit 100C multiple times (throttles) without undervolting. It idles at 60C and loads at close to 90C when undervolted. The CPU is still going strong. In a fanless system, I am actually more concerned about CPU heat affecting the other components (i.e. board power regulators and the chipset) than the CPU. However, in a notebook with a fan/fans and properly engineered airflow, I have no worries.

I am joining the 2530p club. I was in the market for a a second computer for travel. My main rig is a Dell Studio 15 with a Core 2 Due P8600, 500gb hd, 4gigs of ram, 1920x1200 LED screen, and ati radion 4750 hd card and bluray drive. I thought at the time I bought the Dell that it would serve as my media center on the go. Unfortunately, on the go with a 9 cell battery is not happening as this computer must weigh at least 7 or 8 pounds and could hardly be described as durable. For watching a HD movie in bed after my wife yells at me to turn off the TV, it's perfect. It also has a enough juice to handle some light video editing and encoding. That said, it's never going to be the road warrior that I need-especially after screen flexed and case cracked when the passenger sitting in front of me on a red eye from LA to NY decided to recline (the NERVE!). The 15.4" screen was caught in the change of angle and I knew that was the last trip for the Studio 15.

I figured for travel, I might be ok with a netbook--particularly one of the ions, Asus EEE 1201N ($489 at Amazon), with dual core ion seemed like a good candidate. I also considered a Toshiba T115D-1225 (L325 Amd Neo X2 Athlon, 250gig hd and 2 gigs of ram for $489 at Amazon), a Dell 11z (configured with an SU4100, 4gigs of ram, 250 gig hdd and 6 cell for $485 at Amazon) and a Asus Ul20a (SU7300, 2gigs of RAM, 250gig HDD and six cell for $569 at Amazon). I was just about the pull the trigger when I happened upon an HP 2530p for a $699 at Cost Central. After doing a bit of research and using Bing, I found a new (not refurb) 2530p, with an SL9300, 160gig hdd, 2gigs of mem and six cell for $622 at Tech for Less (inc. shipping). Tech for Less gives 12% cash back through Bing. Final price was $550 (no tax). I would have paid more through Amazon (which charges tax). As a note, it was open box, but I see no evidence of the box having ever been opened and it cames with the full 3 year factory warranty. For $550 how could you go wrong?????

I also dropped a little more to get a WD Blue 640gig HDD ($89 at Amazon). I am also toying with putting in a 64gig SSD to run the operating system. I already have an extra 2gig of DDR2 ram laying around and ready to drop in-so ram was never an issue for me. This is one killer little machine. No longer do I have to fear reclining seats and, frankly, this computer looks like it is ready to handle anything you can throw at it (or throw it at).

Has anyone had experience running an OS off the SSD (0 Drive) with an HDD (1 Drive) in the 2530p???

Can check your warranty using HP Warranty Checker? Just plug in your model/serial number. If it's the 3yr global next-day onsite HP warranty then it's a sensational deal. Please do provide a link to the deal.

It's the 3 year warranty... confirmed with HP. I bought an open box, which is new as far as HP is concerned. Here's the receipt copy ($74.72 has already hit my bing account, but doesn't show up on the receipt... my personal info has been redacted).

Here's a description of treatment of products for sale/warranty purpose:

Factory Sealed: Factory Sealed products are new, in original manufacturer packaging, and carry manufacturer warranty.

Open Box: Open Box products are in original manufacturer condition, are fully functional, include accessories, and carry manufacturer warranty.

Factory Refurbished: Factory Refurbished products have been returned to an authorized factory service center, restored to meet manufacturer quality standards, and carry manufacturer warranty.

Refurbished: Refurbished products have been restored to meet manufacturer quality standards, are fully functional, but may show limited signs of use. These products include accessories and a 90-day warranty, unless specifically noted otherwise.

Non-Functional: Non-Functional products are NOT fully functional. Please review all pictures and read all product notes prior to making your purchase. These products are guaranteed only to be in the condition shown. No other warranties apply and no returns are accepted on these products.
Scratch & Dent Scratch & Dent products are functional, but may have physical damage and/or may be missing essential accessories.

To get a bit more technical, open boxes are sold as open box because you can't sell an unsealed box as new, but this has no effect on the warranty (it's new as far as HP is concerned). HP offers a 1 year waranty on factory refurbs (considered class b refurb). Machines that are repaired at service centers (as compared to the factory are considered class c). They carry a 90 day warranty or no warranty at all.

One year is totally doable for a 2530p IMO--i wouldn't get any better on a Tosh T115D or Acer 1810. I actually was expecting a 1 year until I got the box and saw it had a 3 year warranty on the warranty card and confirmed it with HP via phone. This was unexpected... plus I get an extra year on the warranty for using my American Express card for the purchase (4 years total). This computer will likely be retired in 4 years, but it's good to know I am covered for that time!! Again for $550 bucks how can you go wrong??? I am thinking about getting another one for my wife. They are sold out at the moment on this model, but considering she doesn't need a huge hard drive they had a SL9400 with DVD rom and 120gig hdd for 725, less the 12% ($638 total)--an equally sweet deal.

EDIT: The deal for my wife is no longer on the site--nor is my deal. This store has new machines all the time. The best deal they have now is a http://www.techforless.com/cgi-bin/tech4less/FV879AW?id=24pp7kiq&mv_pc=636 for $873 ($768 after bing). This has an SL9400, 250gig hdd and dvd rom. They say it's a factory refurb and that it only has 90 days on the warranty but I think that's a misprint and it's 1 year (as is hp policy on factory refurbs). I would call and confirm on this before buying. I have seen better deals out there. Tech for less said that my computer had a 1 year, but that wasn't the case. It's prob the same type of situation here. I don't mind when stores make mistakes like this and you get more than you were expecting for a change!!!

EDIT: I found another deal. lowmarkup.com has a bunch of refurbished 2530p's for sale. They are BM store in CA, but sell on ebay too. If you buy through ebay, you can get 8% cash back. Here's a link to my spec computer (factory refurb for $498 ($539-8% bing cash with free shipping): http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-ELITEBOOK-25...iewItemQQptZLaptops_Nov05?hash=item1c0fdf0b68 This unit has a 1 year warranty (not the 3---still a good deal though for $498 shipped)

I found the same open box 2530P KS035UT for US$750 here. Interested buyers should note a 32nm competitor appearing ~March.

Here's the Warranty Check results from HP:

    [removed to prevent identity theft]

Because it's an open box, the warranty does date back to the opening (April 2009) and expires 4/2012-- which is still a lot longer than any standard warranty on any consumer laptop out there.

It could be New old Stock... Could probably call HP and have them adjust your warranty by the purchase date.

Anyone here selling the second hd (2.5" 9.5mm) adapter? I live in Mexico City and the price of the part from the hp autorize reseller is $71 USD without taxes. :S I believe I am better off with a 1.8" ssd but I wanted the 3rd usb port since I rarely use the DVD drive.

Hi all. I tried to swap out the 2.5" HD drive on my 2530p in favor of a 640gb WD Scorpio Blue. I have swapped out plenty of HDD drives from lappies in my time, but HP does not make life easy. I downloaded the service manual from HP and removed the screws as directed. from inside the the bottom of the unit. I flipped it over and removed the touch sensitive plate as directed and then attempted to pry up the keyboard. Somewhere along the top right center/corner, the keyboard would not budge. I flipped it back over to double and tripple check to make sure I got all the required screws (and took out a few more that may have been at issue--to no avail. At this point (2 hours in), I decided if I messed around any longer I ran the risk of damaging something. I reassembled the computer in defeat. Does anyone have any tips to help a brother out????

Also, on a separate note-- Mr. Jackson's review which waxed poetic over the quality of the screen is way off base. The contrast is pretty lousy and the viewing angles suck. If I didn't think it would be a total pain in the butt, I would swap out the screen for something sharper. The black aren't black unless you mess around with the angle of the screen. The color is also a bit washed out. I updated the OS to Windows 7 home premium and ran the software to calibrate the colors. That did help marginally--but you can't turn a chevette into a corvette. Given the price of this computer, I think they could have done a lot better on this one area. The rest of the unit is outstanding though. Although my unit has an older SL9300, I have no complaints about performance. I watched 4 hours of hulu last night at full screen in 480P before the battery gave out. The unit never got hot and never foze. The video played without a hitch and loaded quickly--which makes it that much more irksome that the screen quality is poor. Performance was definitely improved by downloading flash 10.1 (beta version 3). The computer also has no problem handling 1080p h.264 files---although there is no way to output them to a tv and the screen is lousy so why bother. It is nice to know that it could do it if it had to. This could really be the perfect computer...soo close. If I could take the 1920x1200 screen from my studio 15 and give it a haircut and stick on on the 2530p I would be in heaven---after someone tells me how to get the 640gb HDD in to the computer.

I ran into the same issue when I tried to swap out the stock 2.5" HDD for an SSD. There is some sort of adhesive on the ribbon cable for the trackpoint and/or keyboard that prevents you from freely accessing the USB header that needs to be unplugged (because the damn keyboard is pretty much glued down). I held my breath and slowly (and carefully) pulled back and up on the keyboard and the cable gradually came loose. The service manual did not cover this issue, and I had not read it in other guides, so it did come as a bit of a surprise. Be prepared for some disconcerting noise (tearing).

I admit I was sweating and shaking a bit, since I had just purchased the notebook. The second time was easier, as I both knew what to do, and the initial bond between the cable and motherboard (?) had already been loosened.

I do not know if this is the appropriate way to do things, and my gut tells me that there must be something I am overlooking; even with this method, I did not have the courage to keep pulling, so I had to work with the keyboard pried up just enough to access the USB plug - and I have not succeeded in plugging the header back in due to its minuscule size, awkward placement, and the fact that one hand is occupied holding the keyboard up and out of the way. I will probably give it another shot one of these days.

Sorry for the delay in the follow up. Hmmmm.... I know I had to have gotten all the screws. Why bother putting in access panels if you're going to make the damn computer so hard to work on???? There are other ways to secure a keyboard rather than using glue!!! Hell, my studio 15 has the same style keybard and it can be popped out by removing four screws, a plastic border and unclipping the ribbon. I don't think I have the intestinal fortitude to pull at the keyboard again. The first time it was flexing and I popped off the F10 button. I got it back on without much trouble, but if you tear the 2 cent plastic spring under the key, you're buying a new keyboard. I am a little frustrated, but I guess I'll have to use an external for my video files.

Could you guys confirm the part number you are using for the 2.5" hard drive bay? Looking forward to dual drive config and that extra usb sure sounds useful.

I did not have problems while removing the keyboard but maybe my unit was not glued.

As a separate note I too want to mention my disagreement with the review's screen quality. My 2530p has 2 things I don't like at all: Screen and heat management (noise)

I believe my unit came with a Toshiba-Matsua screen but viewing angles and color reproduction its not nice at all. Heres to hoping one day I'll get a 8540w with a Dreamcolor2 IPS panel. With that Lenovo will loose the battle on the portable workstation market.

Nando4 has a very detailed post (2nd one down) on the first page of this thread, with a link that brings you here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4881621

He mentions in option #3 the newmodeus caddy that should allow you to swap out the ODD and use a 2.5" SATA HDD. My 2530P came with the OEM caddy, so I can't speak for the newmodeus part personally, but I see no reason why it would not work.

Regarding heat management, I feel the same way. The CPU gets a bit warm under load and the fan seems to kick in when processor temps hit 40-42C, which is a bit conservative IMO. Undervolting does help a great deal, though- I was able to use RMClock to bring the voltage down to ~0.94V at full speed, which dropped temps (and the frequency at which the fan kicks in) considerably (5-7C temp decrease). So, my CPU now idles at 0.925 and only cranks up a tiny bit voltage-wise under load.

As far as the screen- it's passable, but certainly nothing exceptional. I haven't checked what OEM made my panel, but the viewing angles and color reproduction are not terrible enough to be bothersome. That said, I wouldn't want to do any photo or video work that required precise color accuracy on the screen.

Has anyone here installed HP Power Assistant on your 2530p's? I was wondering if it works 100% or only partially. It would be nice to have something like the thinkvantage power manager on the 2530p :D If you do make it work 100% let me know how you did it. Anyone confirming the part number for the 2.5" storage drive bay? The part surfers shows multiple ones and I dont want to risk it. I will buy it from an HP official dealer and its quite expensive ($90) USD here in México (for my income at leat) Anyone that can take photos of the adapter in their computers? :p

    US$68+shipping 2530P optical bay caddy (492547-001)

If want a cheaper option, consider a US$13-shipped 9.5m sata caddy. Would have a mismatched faceplate AND no additional USB port, but would do the job at the lowest cost. Can see an equivalent ebay 9.5mm sata-to-pata caddy as fitted in a 2510P here.

Sorry about posting this question again but the HP Media Library confused me. Nando4 you post on another thred that two diffrent parts are needed for the second hard drive in the 2530p. Is this true? My 2530p came with a 1.8" drive, must I order both parts or just the 492574-001 (without the connector board) suffices? I am confused coz there are 3 parts that fit in the dvd-rw bay. A dummy with just one usb port and no support for the hard drive, the secondary hard drive cage assembly and the secondary hard drive connector board. It would be awesome if the 492574-001 includes the connector board.

Any users with a ssd+hdd configuration can confirm any of my questions?
(I know I might be a PITA but the part distributor here in Mexico doesn't know the answers)

The 2530P Service & Maintenance Guide can help here: http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/.../c01599628.pdf as can the videos at the HP Media Services Library at http://h20464.www2.hp.com/index.html

Yes. A 2.5" drive can go in using the following HP parts:
    * 492574-001 Secondary hard drive cage assembly, includes additional USB port (required for installation of secondary hard drive
    * 495027-001 Secondary hard drive connector board (required for installation of secondary hard drive)

    @nando4:
    hi
I want to modify the DSDT of 2530p like the 2510p
but when I download your attached zip.
It doesn't content the batch file to run.
And it does not have the backup file to restore the default configuration.
Can you re-upload the complete set like you did with 2510p
    thanks

does anyone know about the differences between 2530p and 2530p energy star?
My 2530p is energy star. I see the screen is not bright like 2530p normal.
    Anyone confirms?

I've added the IASL/ASL compiler and load/unload batch files to the 2530P DSDT table RAR file here. You have the tools now to evaluate the temp thresholds and provide an update "quiet fan" type package, similar to the 2510P one here.

Is there a specific order for installing Windows 7 drivers/apps that are available on the HP support site? Or can I install the various files in any random order?

Well, I had to do a clean install of Windows 7, and the "resume from sleep = black screen" problem has returned. Furthermore, oftentimes the screen won't display properly, as if the images have been shredded into little horizontal chunks 2mm x 8mm. The BIOS is the most updated version, as are the chipset and graphics drivers. This is bad.

quick question. is it possible to use a 2.5'' sata drive with this laptop as the main drive without the need of buying any additional bays. The 2530p comes with a Dvd burner and 1.8'' drive.
