    HP EliteBook 2540p - Long DST freezes at 99%

    I just received an HP EliteBook 2540p with a Toshiba 1.8 250 GB HDD. Before committing any data to it, performed all the diagnostics. The Long DST Hard Disk test freezes at 99%. I have not been able to complete this test after several attempts --even after updating the HP UEFI System Diagnostics from Ver. 2.5.0.0 to Ver. 2.7.2.0. However, the Toshiba 1.8 HDD passed the SMART and Short DST tests. Is the problem with the Long DST test attributable only to the HDD or could it indicate a faulty system board? I would appreciate your opinions.

    Did you also upgrade the BIOS of your system? Does the numlock / caps lock respond or is it really a lockup?

    (1) I did not upgrade the BIOS; the unit came with the latest version.

    (2) It does not seem to be a lockup. The notebook exits the test when pressing the "Esc" key.

    Weird, besides updating all other firmware's which are available, the only thing to try is if the problem also occurs with a different hard disk.

    You can always call up HP for a replacive drive, though I don't think its really necessarily.

    The same happened to me. I have a hp envy 13. A week ago it started lagging a few seconds every about 15 seconds. The same problem persisted even after factory reset.
    I've then tried the hp diagnostics at boot time, but the full disk test freezes at 99%.

    Most of the time that is a symptom of a broken HDD.

    Perhaps running a manufacturer specific hdd test from Ultimate BootCD or Hiren's disc could give answers. Seagate's test software (found on both of those discs) will test other brands too.

    Just for the record: I updated the HP recovery tool (downloading it from the HP support site). The test finished but without any error. Then I used CrystalDiskInfo and the trial version of HD Tune Pro and both found that S.M.A.R.T. reallocated sectors count were over the threshold. Both displayed a big "WARNING" message.
    Result: back to the manufacturer for HDD replacement.
