Hi 2560p owners I have quick question maybe somebody can share his experience with me.
    I have a 2560p and added a newmodus OBHD SATA-SATA B caddy.
I can see the disk under Win7 but I'm not able to boot from it.
I have selected in BIOS the right boot order and boot menus but I still can select the Notebook upgrade bay to boot from (I can see, if I plug in, SD card express card etc.).
If I remove the primary disk the 2560p is not booting from the Notebook upgrade bay either.
Are you able to boot from the Notebook upgrade bay?
Unfortunately I do not have a DVD drive so I can't verify if I could boot from a DVD dive in the.

    Million thanks for your help

    Thomas

Just call HP support like he did. They might want to hear the serial number, to make sure it isn't marked as stolen before sending the tools.

Forum rules say that all security bypassing insctructions and such discussions are not allowed.

Therefore, if your local support line cannot give you the tools then sending laptop to the service center is the best advice I can provide here :(

One small OT, what about the ODD faceplate for a second HDD caddy? Has anyone found a replacement to be bought instead of removing the one from the optical drive?

I don't have a 2560p but 2530p. 60GB SSD in the upgrade bay and normal 1.8inch HDD in primary bay. I have no problem booting from upgrade bay. Did you install the latest BIOS? Maybe you can remove the primary drive and try booting from upgrade bay.

Hi tried both remove primary disk and latest Bios but still no sucsess... :(
    I'm running out of Ideas...
The funny thing is I can access the disk in the upgrade bay under win...
in bios the first boot option is Notebook upgrade bay and the upgrade bay is activated...not sure if there is something else that needs to be done...

I was hoping to have 2 bootable disks one for work and a privat one thats the reason why Im so keen on getting it bootable...

 Good news for those who purchase an PE3A or want an x1 2.0 solution right away. Just purchased this cable. I tested it on Z68 desktop motherboard and a 560ti on a friend's desktop. It does support x1 2.0 signaling, it shows on gpu-z and I run Furmark with no issues. The cable I purchased is an x1-x1 extension ~12cm and its price is as low as 2.22$. There are also x1-x16 @ 3.89$ up to 20cm the longest but I can't confirm x1 2.0 compatibility. Hope this helps those who can't wait.

I am probably going to order a PE3A soon

    Also adding some bad news

you can check here that the Core i7 3920XM (Ivy Bridge) is based on a different manufacturing then 2nd Generation Sandy Bridge Processors so using it on older rPGA988B HM65 and HM67 motherboards ain’t feasible...
Offcourse nobody expected something better from Intel. However the differences doesn't seem very big...

Yeah sounds like getting a SB quad core (like i7-2630qm)can provide almost the same performance on the CPU side (while on GPU one then...there is the eGPU for those :p)

I hope only the chipset (that should be QM67, right?) is able to handle SB i7-quad (is there a possibility of a whitelist for CPU too?)

    Hi all,

When my 2560 is docked in the docking station (external screen attached) it won't enter into any power saving mode. When it is on battery or plugged in directly with the cord, it will go to sleep, etc. per my settings. Does anyone have a fix for this? I've left it running all night a couple of times already.

    Thanks!

Nope. There is already a successfull implementation with 2820qm on 2560p. I also upgraded my i3-2310M to an 2630QM... I believe it will work for everybody... Whitelisting the processor is maybe difficult...

Is there anyone who can provide me an memory dump for the Kingston 1866MHz pnp mem? You can use the EVGA spd tool which is provided free here.

    Thanks for helping.

Spoke today with a guy from HP. After he tried to configure my BIOS he was under the opinion that you can't boot a 2560p from a HDD in notebook upgrade bay. I find it very strange but it seems that I have to give up my plan to boot from the 2nd HDD.

Thanks for your report, i was searching for successfull experiences about the topic but i totally missed them. Anyway I thought the socket between i3-5 and i7 were different like on arrandale but I was wrong then :p

Good to know, in a couple of months i could get my quad core too at an affordable price thanks to Ivy Bridge release :p

INFO: How to enable Upgrade Bay Hard Drive boot

I've confirmed on my 2560P (F.22 bios) that it is possible to boot off the Upgrade Bay Hard Drive (optical bay caddy with HDD/SSD that replaces the optical drive). This worked with my newmodeus 9.5mm sata optical bay caddy.

The trick is to enable a hidden bios setting using HP's biosconfigutility from within Windows. Details below:

    1. Go to the DOS prompt (Start->Run->cmd)

    2. Navigate to your system's \swsetup\AppInstl folder to find biosconfigutility.
      Code:
      cd \swsetup\appinstl
In case you can't find it, here's a downloadable BiosConfigUtility.exe

    3. Get a capture of your current bios settings with:
      Code:
      biosconfigutility /getconfig:bios-set.txt

    4. Edit the bios settings file:
      Code:
      notepad bios-set.txt
Change the following entry by removing the astericks next to Disable and moving it to Enable. Ie, from:
      Code:
      Upgrade Bay Hard Drive boot
      	*Disable
      	Enable
      to
      Code:
      Upgrade Bay Hard Drive boot
      	Disable
      	*Enable

    5. Read this new configuration into the bios
      Code:
      biosconfigutility /setconfig:bios-set.txt

    6. Reboot your system, Hit F9 during BIOS boot and now you can select the Notebook Upgrade Bay Hard Drive and boot from it :D

@seabar, you may consider passing this info to your HP contact as it's a pretty important function imho.

This guide is perfect!!! It worked for my 4530s Probook too...

You can better add a link of it on the first page of ODD cuddy... it will be very helpful

Thank you for the feedback, Added a comment to the ODD caddy first post as requested.

Not sure why HP have hidden the Upgrade Bay Hard Drive boot option in the F10 bios menu. It's a pretty important function that should be visible. Maybe a future bios release will show it?

For the same reason they have locked the probooks @ 1333 and whitelist their wifi and WLAN devices. It is gonna be on a package with a shiny ODD bay costing ~50$.

I bought my 2560p without an optical drive. I have been looking for a blurry or dvd burner for the expansion bay. Does it use the same as the 2530p or is it something different. And where do I find one?

    Hi Vince,

I am so happy that I stumbled upon this forum, I Googled specifically for this. Could you tell me which caddy you bought? Exact name/type, seller, maybe a link? I haven't found any suitable for the very same model. I am OK with adjusting/destroying/modifying it as long as it's possible to squeeze it in... Your help is much appreciated. ;)

    Hey Nando,

Will this system not throttle due to massive heat generated in a 12.5 chassis? Really curious about that. Was thinking of going with the 8460p but it seems to be afflicted by throttling with even i5's.

Now am torn between this and the dell e6420. Just need something that can handle quad i7's, 16gb ram, has esata and doesn't break the bank. Also, ofcourse, eGPU :D

I have no personal experience with a i7-quad other than know that a i5/i7 dual-core is rated at 35W TDP and a i7-quad is rated at 45W TDP (max). My i5 certainly has got no where near 105 degrees tjmax so I consider it would have thermal headroom to accomodate a i7-quad. It also has a 65W AC adapter sufficient to drive it.

We only have vnwhite's account of an i7-2820QM installed in a 2560P where he tells us:
Furthermore, a slightly larger, but with similar internals 13" Probook 4330s has had a i7-2820QM installed in successfully. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/630676-hp-probook-4330s-i7-2820qm.html. If you don't need the E6420's 900P/NVS4200M option then I can see no reason why not to go a 2560P instead. It's certainly more portable and imho a bettery looking piece of equipment.

Much thanks for the quick reply. I was really impressed by the 4330s quad, and it looks awesome, but for the life of me I can't find it except for the UK HP page.

Any possibility for it being released in the US as I can only buy frm there. Would also appreciate any tips/suggestions for buying a cheapo 2560p.

There's an 'as new' used i5-2540M 2560P on ebay with 3yr warranty for $675. Ones that allow bidding usually go for the $500s. The Elitebooks like a 2560P are a higher grade unit than the Probooks like the 4330s. One noticable difference b/w the two is the Probook uses a fatter 12.7mm optical drive whereas the 2560P uses a slimmer 9.5mm unit.

A 2560P + i7-quad is the smallest i7-quad capable system with a optical drive available on the market atm. And of course, an eGPU can be attached successfully to one using the expresscard slot as seen in my sig.

just checked it. Also has a $40 shipping fee. I guess I'll haunt ebay for a few days and see if I can score something cheaper. Any resources\guide for some help on the processor switch would be appreciated as well. Esp. Disassembly. Have never done more than cleaning the heatsinks of my ancient msi.

The 4330s also seems to be available only in the UK or europe from what I can see. I think I have sufficient info now to go ahead with this. I'll ask around if I get stuck with something, thanks a lot! Hope to be on the egpu benchmark list soon.

The HP Media Services Library has a video showing how to remove the 2560P CPU. Would love to see a i7-quad 2560P + DIY eGPU implementation. It would be a potent pocket rocket :D

    You'll see it ^_^

I'm moving towards an i7-2630QM or i7-2820QM (this one only if i can win the auction :D), i have to sell the i5-2520M at a reasonable price first. Would be nice to have data to work on about improvement of cores number vs clock speed in eGPU project.

I would love to see some benchmarks with this setup as well. I missed that deal nando posted due to laziness, but will def buy one soon. And do let me know what would be a good price to sell the i5 cause I will have to do the same as well.

Let's hope everything goes well in the disassembling process (i'll finally clean the notebook too)

The CPU left its previous owner yesterday, so i think will be at my home on wednesday.

One sad news however; in the process of showing the eGPU solution to some guys, my express card insert disappeared. Anyone know where could I find another one?

    Thanks in advance

INFO: obtaining an expresscard blank via plastics kit p/n 651376-001

If you've missplaced yours then the replacement can be obtained by ordering the plastics kit, pn 651376-001. Included is the expresscard blank, optical drive weight saver and a modem port insert. It's not possible to get the blank on it's own. The part details have been obtained from the 2560P Maintenance and Service Guide and are shown below:

Warning: insert the expresscard blank the right way!!

Also recommend being careful about how you insert the expresscard blank. I've been advised that if you insert it upside down and push it fully in then the only way to get it out is to disassemble the notebook or drill a hole into the blank, hook into it and fish it out. There are no markings on the expresscard blank to indicate which is the right side up and it does slide in when upside down. The only difference being it's a tighter fit when upside down. So if you not sensitive to the pressure being applied it would be easy to jam the blank in and not be able to eject it.

Purchasing the expresscard blank: Partsurfer.hp.com has the plastics kit (651376-001) listed for US$17.10-delivered.

caddyfaq INFO: FAQ about the optical drive weight saver

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Above: pictures of the 2560P optical drive weight saver

    1. Can the weightsaver's faceplate be removed and installed on a replacement 9.5mm sata optical drive purchased from ebay so don't need to order a matched, pricier one from HP?

No, the weight saver is a single molded piece of plastic with no removable parts.

    2. Can the faceplate be cut off and glued on an optical bay caddy or optical drive?

This would be possible. The faceplate part of the weightsaver is a sold mass of plastic and could be cut off with the right cutting equipment. If the optical drive or optical bay caddy has a nice and flat mating surface then that part could be glued on for a perfect appearance.

Before attempting such a modification AND if you already have an optical drive then consider removing it's existing faceplate and mounting it onto either one of the following 9.5mm sata optical bay caddies with a removable faceplate:

$45 newmodeus' 2560P caddy with mountable faceplate

$20 Fenvi caddy with mountable faceplate. Good detailed photos are available in this thread.

Unfortunately the only other known source of a 2560p optical drive faceplate is to purchase a US$94 2560P optical drive itself from HP. Not an economical way of obtaining it.

    Hi All,

I just bought my second Elitebook off eBay last week (I think I snached it from another forum reader, it was the only i7 on there, sorry).

I am looking to upgrade 3 specific areas to bring it up to maximum capacity & performance.

As this thread was started a while ago, I wanted to ask your opinions regarding currently available technology.

    I am interested in:
    1. Upgrading the 160GB SSD to a 512GB SSD. Should I get SATA II or III. Saw some comments about lower power consumption. More importantly which one should I get, saw a Samsung, Crucial, OCZ and Kingston out there but none compare the same specs.

    2. Would like to put the outgoing 160GB SSD into an original HP Caddy, which parts do I need to order from HP? Will the HP caddy bezel fit properly?
(Wouldn`t it be great if it came with a USB 3 port instead of 2?)

    3. I need to max out the RAM at 16GB as I run multiple VMs together. I saw that some posters are using faster 1866 RAM than HP advertises. Would be willing to invest to try this out. Any idea which RAM would be best? So far I found standard speed 8GB chips @ $150 from memoryx.

Your thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Congratulations on your purchase.

    1. You want SATA-III for maximum performance. Check the usual sites for the latest and greatest SATA-III SSDs: Intel 520 (SF2281), OCZ Vertex 3 (SF2281), Crucial M4 (Marvell 9128), Corsair Performance Pro (Marvell 9174).

    2. HP doesn't sell the caddy but newmodeus has released a 2560P one only a few days ago. See:

2nd HDD / SSD Caddy for HP Elitebook 2560p [OBHD9-SATA-SATA-BU9] - $44.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

Note the 5% off coupon on their facebook page.

The faceplate is transferred from your existing optical drive and is mounted on the caddy. If want to keep your optical drive's faceplate then could either run the caddy without one OR would need the 'plastics kit' from HP (see my last post) from which you'd cut off the faceplate and glue onto the caddy frontplate. newmodeus can supply a 2nd detachable frontplate so can have a backup in case case glueing on the cutoff bit doesn't work out and you want to revert to using the optical drive's faceplate instead.

    3. The 1866Mhz RAM helps HD3000 iGPU performance, but it's not by that much. The % premium over 1333Mhz RAM certainly not reflective in performance. A $150 i7-2630QM or $200 i7-2720QM quad off ebay as a user-installed upgrade will give you far more performance improvement. Changeover costs from your i7-2620M might be as little as $50-$100.

RAID-0 to boost SSD performance yet again

The HP RAID User Guide indicates that RAID-0 is supported using our upgrade bay (optical drive bay):

So running two identical SATA-III SSDs in a RAID-0 arrangement can effectively double IOPS and seq read/write performance.

UPDATE: Found here that RAID-0 (striping) isn't possible in latest bios version F.22. Only RAID-1 (mirroring) is possible.

    i7-2630QM mounted :D
It's working like a charm. The only downside: Temperature.

I run 8 threads of "toast.exe" and after 45 minutes of load, the peak temperature was 95°C (with turbo boost enabled @ 2.4GHz). Probably in game should stay between 85°C and 90°C. In a couple of hours i should have the answer :)

Maybe in Benchmarks, but effectively? What sort of application would it require to be capped by either IOPS or read/write performance of a modern SSD?

    Ok then:

If HP didn't put a quad core inside the 12 inches notebook, was surely for a temperature reason. Running AIDA64 stress test for 15 minutes increased the temperature to 100°C (with a total config power consumption of 70W with max screen brightness and HDD loading, so during normal scenario, the 60W power cord would be enough). Playing BF3, the highest temperature reached was 90°C that is a more reasonable value (compared to mid eighties with stock thermal grease and i5-2520M). I'll test Mass Effect to compare with vnwhite results. Surplisingly the notebook didn't turn off on 100°C even if it's the TJunct, probably because core 0 (the one that should have the DST thermal sensor) was at 96°C
I used an industrial white thermal grease with no-name (but quite expensive from what my purchase office said :D ) In the following days i'll try different thermal greases to see if the temperatures change.

In the few game tested (Settlers 7, Battlefield 3 and Batman Arkham City, no performance gain in the EGPU setup compared to the old i5-2520M, so probably even with 2 additional cores, the lower operating frequency doens't grant better results.

yikes. Those are some crazy temps. Maybe one reason why it does not shut down is that your proc could be an Engineering Sample. Like you said that may be why there is no quad option for these 12 inch laptops.

The CPU came from an Asus G74 so i think it's a retail piece. Simply i think it turn off going beyond the temperature, not matching it. Anyway this evening i'll try mass effect 2 to see the temperature compared to vnwhite ^^

QUESTION: Does a Folio 13 backlit keyboard fit a 2560P?

The 13" Folio 13 ultrabook keyboard is backlit and does appear to be very similar in dimensions to the 12.5" 2560P keyboard. If anybody has access to both machines could they see if we can retrofit this backlit keyboard to the 2560P? I find the 2560P's nightlight spread is insufficient to see the keys easily. From this angle it does look like it would fit.

No more pointing stick and...what about the electrical connection for the backlit?

(i would trade happily anyway the pointing stick for the backlit option :D )

I believe both 3.3V and 5V could be tapped off the docking connector if not found elsewhere. So power wouldn't be a problem. It's whether it fits or not. Sometimes a backlit connector or pads are included even if the final notebook misses out on the backlit keyboard (eg: HP DV4-2000/CQ41). Dunno.. haven't disassembled the system to look at the systemboard.

But yeah.. the pointing stick would no longer be there. Another option - if HP keep the same chassis for the 2570P then, based on the work with the Folio 13, perhaps they've been able to make a backlit keyboard for it that can be retrofitted to our systems? HP tends to keep the chassis design for a few generations of a system.

Yeah.. one of the issues I noticed too.

Right! (i'm a total disaster in electric cabling :D ) Anyway i see some evident differences: up/down arrows larger, Shift key larger and overall wider design (compared to the total width of the notebook); i think this one will not fit on the 2560p :( We should hope for the newer 25x0p like nando said
