    @wrightc23, i'd love some details on whats actually involved in doing this. I have an 8440p UK spec with an i7-620M and would love to upgrade to a quad.

    I have seen the 'cheap' ES spec cpu's on fleabay are these any good, or would you get a genuine OEM part? Also what thermal paste do you use and where do you get this from? are any other parts needed to actually perform the upgrade?

    Regards

    As a matter of fact, yes, I was using firefox 4. Thanks for the tip. I think i'm going to go back to 3.6. 4's interface sucks, no color and kind of just lame. Thanks again.

    Yesterday, i also went to the nvidia site and downloaded the latest driver for the 3100m. It's not on the HP site. Not sure if that's a recommended thing to do, but I did it anyway...anyone else do that too?

    Another strange thing too, for the past 5 days since I got the computer, it was running really cool, the bottom didn't heat up AT ALL and had very quiet fan noise. i was surprised how cool it stayed, the fan was blowing out cool air even, not warm or anything. Then I tried Call of Duty and as expected, the fan ran harder and was blowing out warm air obviously cuz the machine is being stressed more.

    Well, since then, it seems just with regular web surfing, now the fan blows warm air and the machine warms up a little on the bottom, when before (and what i just mentioned above) it would stay sooooo cool. Any idea what might be the cause of that?

    HP's got their manual online that shows the process, but here's the quick and dirty from memory.

    Only tools you need are a torx bit (#8 I think), a Phillips screw driver, and a slot screwdriver
    I used some Arctic Silver 5 (I think...any good thermal compound will do).
    I would avoid ES chips out of principle. Mine was actually a CPU swap with a 17" Dell Vostro

    The process is the same for the 8440p/8440w:

    0. Remove battery (I think that's a given)
    1. Remove screws for keyboard.
    2. Remove screws for the hinges (These require a torx bit). Only the inside ones need to be taken off, if memory serves me correctly.
    3. Remove the 3 screws on the inside of the battery bay.
    4. Remove the keyboard
    5. Remove the QuickLaunch button panel
    6. Unscrew the heatsink, and unplug the fan.
    7. Remove the heatsink/fan assembly, clean it out while it's out. Remove any thermal compound with alcohol.
    8. Turn the screw holding in the CPU to unlock it
    9. Pull the CPU out.
    10. Reverse process with the new CPU, using new thermal compound

    Actually late model stepping engineering samples are usually fine, early model ES/QS are risky. In actual fact you can pick up 2nd hand OEM's mobile core 2 quads on ebay pretty cheaply in the UK and US so generally there's no need to go down the ES route.

    Best bets for the 8440 are revised gen 1 Core i7 quads, the i7-740QM and i7-Q840M are both excellent CPU's. As I said earlier only the sandy bridge dual cores are available in the UK on the 8460p at the moment and given the history of HP over here will probably be the only models available. The 2nd gen core i7-2620m is an excellent processor but it still won't be as quick as a higher spec first gen quad (for my needs at least).

    On the temps, the installed i7-840QM idles at around 31 degrees c post the upgrade, the factory installed i7-620m ticked along at around 38/39 degrees centigrade.

    If you're in the UK and are looking for a cheapish quad core, do a search for laptopmonkey. He usually has a wide range of OEM and late model ES Core i7's for mobiles. I've bought many from him and never had a single issue.

    He also sells internationally so if you buy from his US ebay auctions you get them much cheaper than his UK price!

    Took me days to figure that one out but haven't had a single issue since then.

    If I set my 8440p up not to go into standby when i close the lid, the screen doesn't come back on when I open it again. So far i figured out that it has something to do with the laptop switching to the VGA port and not switching back. Does anyone else have this problem?

    Has anyone tried a 920xm or 940xm in a 8440p yet or is 55W simply to much?

    Anyone successfully get sound on the 8440p when running Windows 7 SP1?

    For me, without the Audio driver I get sound from the PC's speakers but the headphone jacket doesn't work (it continues to output sound to the PC speakers when I connect headphones or external speakers). This was also the case pre-SP1 and then I had to install the Audio Driver and then it works.

    But now, with SP1 it seems like the PC speakers stop working when I install the Audio Driver but earphones work.

    Updated the BIOS and it doesn't seem like anything is broken.

    * Win 7 Enterprise x64 Edition
    * 4GB DDR3 1333 ram
    * 160GB Solid State Drive (Intel Gen 2, Upgrade. SUPER fast)
    * 14" Screen 1600x900
    * 3G Wireless WAN Card (HP un2420 - Gobi 2000) (Upgraded)
    * Intel HD Graphics
    * Factory warranty through May 2013
    * Intel vPro capability
    * Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN WiFi card (Upgraded)
    * Built-in night light at top of screen
    * 1 HP power adapter
    * Added NEW HP EXTENDED LIFE 8-cell Battery ($150 and never used)

    In absolute MINT condition. Price wise I would prob be looking to get around $1.500+ ($2.500 new with specs provided @ hp.com)

    If you are interested ship me a PM and I can add it to the buy/sell page etc. I have sold and bought laptops via NBR before and can provide ebay reference etc.

    I've been trying to figure this out for a while. Thank you so much. I've had the 8440p since October, and this just started happening.

    Still doesn't solve the fact that the colors are awful. I've tried changing the settings, but nothing looks right. Seems to have blueish/greyish/purpleish tint, and colors aren't vivid. I've contacted HP, and I think I'm going to send my computer back and get the screen replaced. Took it to an authorized service provider, but they said they ran diagnostics and couldn't find a problem.

    Looking to upgrade the ram in my 8440w, from 4gb to 8gb. Would go to a full 16gb but can't find any 8gb sticks in my area.

    Any way, is there anything specific I should look for? I'm looking at either Corsair Value Select 4GB DDR3 1333MHz CL9 or Kingston ValueRAM 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9, both go for $45 for a 4gb stick.

    The only real other option is from Newegg.ca, SAMSUNG 4GB DDR for $42 for 4gb but I'll need to add $10 for shipping where as the memory I listed above I can buy in person at a local shop.

    So can I go with any of the listed memory, all seem the same in specs. Just to be clear I will be replacing the two 2gb sticks in my 8440w now with two 4gb sticks.

    Thanks.

    Hi Folks,

    I have a 8440p which I really enjoy.

    It has W7 Pro 32 and 2gb ram, 250gb hdd.

    I'm planning on a triple upgrade - 500GB hdd, W7 Pro 64, and 4gm ram.

    I'd like to do a a clean install, and I dont really want HP software on my computer.

    Trouble is I'm not really sure how to go about it. The RAM isn't a problem. I have contacted HP support today and they are sending me a 64 bit version of W7. I guess my question is - Can I swap the HDD out and install the new 64 W7 in one hit? Will the 64 bit disc be an upgrade or a full version? Any suggestions. Cheers in advance.

    I'm surprised that you didn't get both disks with your 8440p. The one HP gave me with mine was a full version one. So keep the old harddrive with 32 bit and then just do all your setting up on your new harddrive with the new disk.

    The BIOS settings for the 8440P offer many features, including enabling and disabling webcams and fingerprint sensors. Did you check Bios?

    A CRITICAL BIOS UPDATE was just released for the 8440p and 8440w. The importance of this update has increased the BIOS revision number to F.20.

    You cannot flash back to a previous version once you apply this update. Please review the release notes and flashing guidelines before proceeding.

    Visit the Business BIOS thread below for official HP download links and more information.

    also- some earlier bios do not even show the webcam as an option. I believe the latest firmware resolves this. If it does not even show the option for the webcam in the bios- it might be a good idea to flash to the latest ver.

    Just a quick FYI- I learned the hard way that quad core processors such as the 720qm and better ONLY work on the motherboards that have the Discrete graphics card. (I could be wrong- but the document the HP tech showed me supports this) The intel HD boards do not support the quads- not sure if a firmware upgrade will fix this in the future but I doubt it...

    mine works properly with internal and external jack switching. Try reloading the latest audio drivers. If that does not fix it- you may need the daughter card replaced.

    Given that the generation of quad that works on the 8440 series doesn't come with integrated graphics, there will be nothing in the future to make quads work on intel integrated video...as there is no intel video to use.

    no- you must use the newest dock for the 8440, 88540 and 8740 series. The dock connector is not the same as previous models.

    Hi guys,

    I got my brand new EliteBook 8440p in the first week of October. Unfortunately, it has some severe problems and really drives me mad.

    The display is a constant irritant to my nerves. I got black screens quite often (no energy saving, no hibernation!) without any previous notice of an error message or something like that. The video graphics driver (Intel HD IGP) does not report that it has stopped working. Suddenly, I get that black screen. All lights are still on but nothing works after that. I even cannot start the task manager by hitting CTRL ALT & DEL. The display stays black / blank.

    I have just one chance thereafter: pressing the power button for as long as 4 seconds so the system shuts down the hard way.

    This is what it looks like:
    http://www.abload.de/img/img_8686_kleinw7cim.jpg
    http://www.abload.de/img/img_8687_klein2kcz6.jpg
    http://www.abload.de/img/img_8688_kleinzicxq.jpg

    So I sent my notebook to the HP Notebook Repair Service in Poland. I took just a few days and then I received my EliteBook 8440p with the motherboard being replaced. Unfortunately, they did not change the display as well.
    The new motherboard had the BIOS version F.12 pre-installed. I upgraded to version F.13 and afterwards to F.20 as I did when I purchased the unit seven weeks ago.

    Unfortunately, the problem has not being solved. I got that black screen for about 15 more times with that brand new motherboard. This is why I guess the reason is a design flaw somewhere in the Intel chipset or maybe the HP design is just crap.

    Can anyone help me with that? Any suggestions? Please, tell me what to do. Thank you so much.

    drivers used:
    graphics, Ethernet, WLAN, any other from HP

    I'm using the elitebook 8440p sind 1 year. In the last month I went into graphics driver crashes using Firefox on Windows 7 Prof 64bit. My system setup can be found in the screenshot/attachment:
    * NVS 3100M (GT218GLM); Driver Version: 8.17.12.7621; Driver Date: 18.10.2011
    * Core i7-620M

    Since the last update of the drivers (HP Support Assistant) instead of driver crashes I got a freez of a windows. I'm not able to minimize windows or open new application. A power off is the only chance.

    Long story short, HP in home tech came a few days after to fix my display problem. The guy showed up with a brand new replacement display. It did correct the issue mentioned above.

    I was very thankful no more sending back was needful.

    Hi folks,

    Has anyone investigated if the mini pci-express slot for 3G cards can be used for other devices such as an SSD ?
    (Unfortunately there's no tool to search a specific thread so big like this one)

    Also can any owners of the nvidia based 8440p (or 8440w as there should be not much difference) report about performance on games from recent years
    Like on what title I could be expecting sufficient performance on say medium settings. Of course I don't mean newest demanding FPSshooters etc.
    3dmark results on the internet place this GPU at some performance level but I'm not sure about the quadro drivers impact on this.

I am interested in leaving my computer with factory settings although I dont have the recovery cd's and detleted these partitions because I am stupid (I thought I had the Cd's in the box of my machine). I have a 250gb hard drive if thats important.

    Hay all, i've had the 8440p for about a year now, very happy with it over all but i think it's time to get the caddy and do the HDD swap. I know newmodeus does a caddy which has been reccomended o here but i'm in the UK and am seeing something similar on eBay.

    Has anyone bought from the UK? Did they use newmodeus or something else?

    also interested in this. this is simple adapter, I would assume if these work then they should all work same way/performance.
    but you never know how the chinese cheapness might suprise you ;)

    edit: if this one comes reallly with the eSata port like on the picture then it's a useful feature. the adapter can be used as normal universal external one then and you could install/copy things from dvd to 2nd hd too! :)

    is anyone working on an SSD with system and 2nd HD in a caddy like this one?

    I do but the other way round. It works flawless.

    The hard drive bay houses my HDD. I did it this way because the HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor works just there and is useless with SSDs whereas my Crucial m4 SSD sticks in this upgrade bay. Of course, I removed the DVD writer before. The Seagate OEM hard drive included with the HP upgrade bay was sold on eBay.

    True it seems it works only there, but it's barely usable (unless you really drop your laptop often ;). so if you keep system then on SSD you can't use dvd at the same time.

    has anyone seen the 3d driveguard in action :D ? (like if the HD/system really stopped)

    anyone had this issue

    laptop works fine until its plugged into the mains, it then keels over and locks up, screen goes black and fan ramps up to max. all lights are still on

    it just started doing it last night, no updates recently, no changes at all to the system and nothing in event log other than reporting the unexpected shutdown??

    i have tried it on and off the dock and directly with ac adaptor and tried a spare adaptor too, all the same result???

    battery will charge however with the laptop powered off.

    same result with battery removed as well???

    BIOS is f2.0

    edit: nahh, it was me not reading clearly ;) So you have the problem only when plugged

    But is it charging when on ? do the problems appear when you're booting or go to bios (before system loads) ?
    if so then it seems like a hardware problem on the motherboard
    HP seems to have a problem with power/charger/battery related issues on the mobo in these business units since about nc6400 (not sure about 6930p which I am using now). Perhaps an intended one if it's so long?

    how old is your unit ?
    is that bios the newest ? try reflashing the bios nevertheless and load bios defaults, so you eliminate the chance it got corrupted (they do sometimes)

    it wont operate on AC power at all, as soon as the PC gets a sniff of AC it locks up, screen goes blank and fans ramp to max, that no matter where or when, BIOS, windows, preboot, boot, everything

    i have sent it back to HP for repair, its got a 3 year warranty and its only just done its first year, hopefully it'll be a one off as we use a lot of the elitebooks here, although most are the smaller 2540p's

    My 8440w is 1 year and a half old and I'm having an annoying problem with it.

    Every time when I remove the AC adapter plug to use the laptop on batteries when I plug it again to energy the computer becomes REALLY slow and the CPU usage goes high. Is impossible to use even for simple things like open a tab browser or write a message.

    It usually takes a lot of time (30 minutes) to become normal again, sometimes I have to close programs or shut down and wait a few time to use it again. But if I take the plug off again in few seconds is possible to use the notebook again.

    Anyone already experienced this kind of problem? Any suggestion on how to solve it?

    I looked for an ACPI driver for this model but didn't find.

    Call to the support is useless, I bought a machine with 3yrs warranty and with a "long-life battery that supports 900 cycles" after 1yr and 300 cycles my battery is almost dead (lasts less than 1 hour), the cover of the touchpad button now isn't exactly covering the button, I have a lot of problems with overheating, I never used the keyboard light but somehow it isn't in the right place, and other problems...

    And all the support says is "it was caused by bad use", I sent photos of my other 3 laptops touchpad buttons (vaio SZ, toshiba satelite 4334 and asus 1005HA and no one have this kind of problem). "Bad use" is their explanation for everything, and since my notebook has a 3 yrs warranty with support on site they don't send anyone to check the problems because it was cause by bad use and the fixes will be charged, I said "no problem, if I cause the problems I can pay for the fixes", then they say "this notebook is a bussiness/corporative model and in case the warranty doesn't cover it we can't send anyone if the laptop isn't in a company" (SO WHY THEY SELL IT TO REGULAR PEOPLE IN A SHOPPING??).

    They told me to take the notebook to an authorized support provider, I went there and they didn't find pieces for my model because it is a bussiness/corporative model.

    So I have a computer that I can't open or send to another place to repair because still is in the warranty period but the support on site can't help me and the authorized service provider don't have the pieces. An expensive notebook that after 1.5yr have a lot problems that no one fixes and no one cares about my complains.

    I bought this laptop for R$4600 (around U$2500) with the intention to use it at least 3 years and after a year and a half I had to buy another laptop because is impossible to work on it (bought a Lenovo U300s a month ago).

    Sorry about that last part but I highly recommend other people to don't buy this machine or any other HP machine especially if you use it for much time a day and live in Brasil. It is the worst laptop I had ever had (the Vaio SZ I used during 3 years, the toshiba during 2 years and Asus I use as a 2nd laptop since 2009).
    I should have heard what all the people here say about HP, but I thought that because it is an workstation and had 3yrs warranty the things would be different...

    copenhagen its seems that:

    1. you are very likely to have a faulty power supply only!
    this is albo a problem that's been present for years with nc6400 and 6910p - these all use the same power supplies. the symptoms were exactly like you would describe - the laptop worked but slowed down terribly when received inappropriate voltage from power adaptor

    2. HP support in your country is very poor as you describe it. "They don't have the parts"? ?!
    in my country (Poland) they do not ask if you are at company or home when it's onsite support.
    you have to demand your rights and ask for the technician to come to given location
    you can tell them you know it's very likely a faulty power supply unit (maybe they can send you one) though I doubt it will change they approach

    easiest way if you go to a local store/repair center (maybe not necessarily a HP one) and ask for another power supply just to check for a moment
    if this doesn't help then it's mainboard's circuitry and this way or another they have to replace it. worst case I imagine is that you have to send it to them because you must have a way for the warranty cover to work.

    your battery could be covered by warranty by one year only unfortunately. don't know about your overheating issues as you didn't describe it too much, maybe just the fan is too full of sticky dust already

    Anyone solve this ?
    Initially ext. speakers worked. Used H'phone and they quit working. Now EVEN after removing h'phones and restarting - ext. speakers will refuse to work.They are DEAD- whatever happens.
    I can imagine this is a problem with that IDT control panel which is works like a piece of scrap unlike a realtek control panel in other computers that immediately - o/p's a message that you removed the H'phone jack and then the speakers take over.
    Did anyone succeed in solving this ?>

    sieger you are on windows7 ? It might be a software or hardware problem. I guess the sensor for jack out is hardware and the software only communicates the state.
    but to make sure try to uninstall the audio driver and install again. also you might try disabling this IDT from autostart/services and check after restarting.
    this should not be needed for sound to work

    if no success then you are likely to call HP support and get this fixed

    N00b question here but will the 8440p work with 16GB Ram (16GB (2x 8GB) - PC3-10600 DDR3 1333 MHz 204pin SO-DIMM DDR3 ) ?

    Actually it's not that obvious as different specs say either 8gb or 16gb (in case a quad-core is installed) maximum is allowed for 8440w which is almost identical (same chipset). For the 8440p I don't see now but I think I saw 16gb maximum too when I first read about it. So maybe they didn't update the specs and if there's quad-core you'll have to give it a try to make sure (if you call support I bet they tell you only what they have listed in specs ;)
    here for the 8440w in the quickspecs it is 16gb:
    http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13519_div/13519_div.HTML

    regarding the audio jack problem it appears it's a common software-related one with different symptoms, two different solutions found in this thread: (either reinstall the audio driver to the newest one or one more)

    hello, i have a 8440p with the intelHD integrated unit, running the i5 board, with 6gb ram, what is the fastest CPU i can run with the machine or can i fit a i7 cpu?
    also with the integrated GPU, can the internal board be swapped out to run the nvidia gpu?

    Well, actually an Intel Core i7-640M is the fastest processor to choose from.

    The even faster Clarksfield quad-core CPUs (i7-720QM to i7-940XM) implicitly require a motherboard with dedicated NVIDIA graphics.

    Honestly, I'm not. I guess I was totally wrong. It seems to be that way you mentioned above.

    So does anyone have an extract of the list of what VEN and DEV PCIDs are whitelisted on the most current BIOS?
