Hello all, I'm new to this forum! Hopefully I can help with things here and there. Now to business - I have an 8440p that refuses to turn the fan on while running on battery power. It will literally let the processor cook to 105 celcius then shut off and not allow me to turn it on for about 5 minutes. I have tried older and the latest BIOS revisions. I can manually turn the fan on using HWinfo64, but it's annoying to have to open it and set the fan speed every time it resumes from standby, or I switch from AC to battery power, etc. Anyone else ever have this issue? I've set the system cooling policy to active, passive, changed BIOS settings such as "Fan always on while on AC power", enabled and disabled "power monitor circuit", all have not made a difference. This laptop has been through a couple reinstalls, has latest drivers, etc, the fan just does not come on at all if it's running on battery.

I have the adapter and sound works through it. Did you try right-clicking the speaker icon, clicking "playback devices" and setting the default device to the T.V. or digital audio or whatever it says?

    Hello,

I bought an HP 8440p laptop (with Intel graphics) in order to repair it. The previous owner stated that it wouldn't turn on after Bios upgrade. The led lights are on and the fan works but the screen remains black. The same with external screen.

I took the hdd out and checked it out. It works fine and hidden partiotion with bios files is there. Then I took it back and tried to do a bios recovery by holding all four arrows down while powering the laptop. The padlock led blinks 4-5 times the the laptop shuts down, and after maybe 10 sec. it turns on with padlock led blinking and again after 5-10 sec. shuts down. It turns on now and padlock led doesn't blink.

I also downloaded latest bios for 8440p and run HP FirmwareUpdate tool with "Create bootable USB disk on key" option. The padlock led blinks continuosly, the laptop doesn't shut down, the fan speeds up but nothing happens. I let it work for more than 1/2 hour with no result.

Then I disassembled it and checked the motherboard under microscope but it seems ok. What is unusual unlike other laptops I couldn't find the graphics chip. There is one large chip but I presume that it isn't gpu since no cooler is on it.

Please help if you know what could be wrong here.

    Thanks in advance

OK....I have a whole pile of the HP 8440P Elitebooks. I want to overclock them. First, any bios updates or hacks?
Second, Which chipset would I use with Setfsb, and does setfsb support it? I want to get the DAWGS running faster! Thanks in advance....

Lastly, any jumper settings that would give a hardware overclock?

Guys it seems like you haven't dissasembled much laptops so far ;) ? First of all there are practically no jumpers on laptop motherboards these days. Even if there were any then not for an overclock! ;) Also haven't heard for a modified bios allowing oc'ing on a laptop - correct me if there was any.
There are some pin mods though that allow for OC in some laptops. This seems to be possible for example in the predecessor 6930p because it's the same chip responsible that makes this work in 2530p: see post

Second there's usually no seperate active cooling for GPU -it's shared with CPU. If there's no dedicated GPU then it's integrated into the northbridge (chipset)- this is clearly the intel graphics on your 8440p rickPA.
Regarding the likely corrupt bios issue I can't help. Seems the laptop reacted to your attempts in recovering the bios but with no result. My guess would be it may be a mainboard problem too and "won't turn on after a bios upgrade" may as well be a lie by the seller to get a higher price for the dead laptop. Seen such before. I remember similar weird led blinks and turn on/turn off behaviours in other hp dead mobo's where there was clearly a hardware problem.
By the way since when HP is placing backup bios files on the hdd ? where did you get the instructions for the bios recovery with cursor keys etc. ?

Hi, I have just bought a 8440p with NVS 3100 GPU (it should arrive tomorrow).
Is it possible to disable NVS 3100 and use Intel HD card to save battery life? May I install, for example, drivers from another manufacturer which allow switching?

I just inherited an 8440p at work but the BIOS is password locked and nobody knows the password. It's running an ancient BIOS and IDE HD performance is extremely poor. I've read that this issue was resolved in a later BIOS.

Is there some way to remove the BIOS lock without the password? Is there a CMOS battery that's not soldered I can get to? Or is this thing stored in NVRAM?

    Thanks

I just upgraded my 8440p from Win7 to Win8. Everything went smoothly, Win8 dutifully took in all drivers, settings, apps, bookmarks, etc. The only exception is Validity fingerprint reader (VFS451), which despite authenticating just fine web pages in IE10, fails to work with Win8 logon page. Audio feedback is not audible while scanning, which makes me believe the driver is probably not fully compatible with Win8. I searched and installed from HP drivers site later versions of both Validity reader and HP Protect Tools Security Manager, Win8 compatible, at no avail. Currently I have the newer version 8.0.1.1328 of HP Protect Tools running with the latest Validity Reader certified for 8440p and Win7 - 4.0.15.0. Newer versions of the reader, like 4.4.234.0 don't work at all, neither in browser nor with the logon screen. Had anyone overcome this, please share.

Hey ipxpxpip, do you have Nvidia graphics or Intel graphics? Just wondering because I 'm about to order this adapter in the hopes to get both sound and video working over one cable. Been looking all over the net to find out whether it 's possible or not with this notebook but no clear answers. I know it definitely works for video but been reading mixed answers on the audio part.

I have Intel graphics and when I check my sound options this is what I see:

I 'm hoping the digital outputs will become available when I connect my HDMI cable to the aforementioned adapter.

    Thx

Edit: Well I went ahead and ordered the adapter, I 'll let you guys know if it works or not.

I just received the adapter and tried different drivers but there is just no way to get audio working over the Displayport to HDMI. I assume it only works on Nvidia cards.

    Bollocks :(.

greetings fellow users :) just bought a secondhand Elitebook 8440p off of Ebay i7 2.67GHz-M620 with NVIDIA NVS 3100 graphics with 512 MB dedicated DDR3 video memory. It came with a 320gb seagate hdd and 4gb of ram.

First upgrade was to a crucial M4 256gb SSD.

Second upgrade was removal the DVDR and installing an upgrade bay with a 500gb HDD

third upgrade was to 8gb of PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333)

system runs windows 7 pro sp1 better than my desktop. very pleased with the system. only question is can i replace the 500gb hdd with a 1tb hdd, HP website says 500gb is the max size anyone know different.

    regards

Which drivers? It works with Intel too I think the issue you have pictured there is the same as I had when I did a clean install of Win7 32bit, but maybe the same for 64bit.

I'm fairly sure it was working with the graphic driver from windows update and MS sound drivers, but stopped working when I installed the IDT audio softpaq sp50589

Once I installed the Intel driver softpaq sp46682 overwriting the 3 newer, but incompatible components from windows update the two disabled HDMI devices disappeared and I was able to select Intel HDMI or IDT Speakers as playback devices.

seems the ssd and extra 4gb of ram did not improve the performance for 3Dmark. i installed the latest NVIDIA NVS 3100M Version:

296.35 WHQL not the ones from the HP website Version: 306.96 (12 Nov 2012) next time i do a clean install i'll try those and see what difference if any they make

    FYI runs UT/UT2003/UT2004 fine

Would you be so kind to check both the version of your audio and video driver and post them here? I 'm currently using my old Dell D620 which has an SPDIF connector on its docking station but I 'm still interested in using the HP8440p.

Hi, I am not sure if any Sandy oder Ivy Bridge CPU will fit in the 8440p? Or have the newer mobile CPUs an other socket or isn't the BIOS compatibile?

Thanks! This finally solves HDMI audio problem. I have Windows 7 x64, but similar recipe worked for me.
After reading your post I unistalled IDT and tried its different versions, but none of them worked.
Then I installed sp46683 (with IDT uninstalled), after which active HDMI Audio appeared. But without IDT I didn't have sound in headphones, so I installed sp54179 (new version of sp46683) - didn't change anything, and then I installed IDT sp50589.

And now I have all audio devices working correctly: speakers, headphones and HDMI.

    Hello! new 8440p owner!

i had a 6930p, and it was a great laptop, but i found an 8440p for $260 complete and working... WOW what a difference! these things are spectacular laptops!

the 6930p had the latch problem (anyone know where to get a new latch by the way? i broke one side trying to fix it), and the screen wasnt LED. also, the processor isnt as battery friendly either... the 8440p has about double the battery life over the 6930p, and its a lot faster overall too! Plus being a LOT cooler running. (the i5 is a fast processor, but i can tell the motherboard is much snappier too.). finally, no digital video output. love the displayport on the 8440p!

just thrilled to see these things being basically given away. i dont understand why someone would spend $600 for a brand new consumer pile of crap when you can get an 8440p for $300 or so.

Agreed. I found you guilty on injecting the thought of replacing my 6930p to 8440p ;P
In my country prices have also dropped significantly as I see now. But I'm afraid you exaggerate a bit with the almost doubled battery life ;P
Regarding the costs the downside is docking stations are more expensive if you plan on using that too.

by the way are the power supplies the same? and the extended/ultra battery port should be too (meaning I could hopefully use my current ultra-cap. batteries with 8440p)

I picked up one of these the other day, traded an iPad Mini for it. Very happy with the performance... not happy with one aspect, though. If I attempt to do anything graphically intensive, the temperatures shoot up and eventually the laptop unceremoniously shuts down.

Now, being that it's 3 months out of warranty (and HP refuses to help me, I've called) I've pulled off the heatsink (and removed the badly-installed tinfoil that was on the CPU/GPU heatsink area) and re-applied some thermal grease... no dice. I boot up Minecraft and I can get about 5 minutes of play before the temps shoot to 100*C and the laptop eventually just blips off.

Dust is not an issue. I have cleaned the fan and vent thoroughly. Not sure what's going on here, but has anyone had this issue before? How did you fix it?

Laptop has a Core i7 2.66, 8GB RAM, nVidia 3100m NVS (latest drivers from nVidia), Win7 Ultimate. Any assistance is appreciated.

I've seen some heatpipes die eventually. They just don't transfer heat as efficiently as before or at all. So replacing the whole heatsink/fan assemby might help.

If you can touch the heatsink while computer is running, is it equally hot all the way? If it stays cool at the far end, heat isn't transferring properly.

yes they are the same. battery from my 6930p fits in my 8440p no problem, and works fine. same with the power supplies.

same with the internal hard drive caddy too :D

what i want to know is, can i upgrade my screen? a higher resolution would be nice, but more importantly something with better viewing angle.

minecraft that demanding, seriously ;) ?
gp1138 I'm not sure if thermal grease serves the purpose well in some of these cases like those GPU's. If the layer has to be thick it may be even worse. I guess this is why they use those thermap pads, isnt' it ?
Also you shouldn't use cheap ones, and you need some couple of days for the full effect (although it does not seem to be the case here)
Did you screw the heatsink hard enough and by the cross rule ? (or whatever we call it).
    Just my opinion
Otherwise there is some other hardware problem on the motherboard if the temps go so high.

KLF do you mean also copper heatpipes ? I'm just curious how such piece of metal could loose it's heating transfer properties ?

I need to check that, I guess. I tried again yesterday, this time using Quake III Arena after reapplying thermal grease and making sure things were tight. Even removed the little fabric grid under the fan that was covering the vent. No dice, still overheats when I try to game on it. Maybe I'll try a new heat sink assembly and fan. I want to sell/trade this laptop, but I refuse to do it when it's overheating this way.

actually which temps go high? both cpu and gpu?
Did you try to stress the CPU only and what happens then? (like in prime or similar)
for that test you could also try leaving ATI powerplay setting on battery level -lower GPU frequency - which should help it to be cooler (and btw games like quake III should still run on it smoothly no doubt)

this way you could try come out if it's general problem of overheating, or maybe previously overclocked GPU or CPU problem (I think you can OC graphics in these laptops, not sure about processor)

Those are called pipes for a reason. They are hollow with liquid inside that does the actual heat transfer. If they weren't hollow, they would be called heatsticks... ;)

well heres another surprise. i bought a second 8440p for dad, but this one came with the nvidia 3100m chipset, and the 1400x900 screen.

nice video and great screen resolution, but this machine idles warm and drains the battery twice as fast :(

i think i like the elitebooks with the intel video a WHOLE lot better. im off to see if i can undervolt the video card now....

If you haven't found info on these forums or google, then no one might have tried :/

Did you check the cooling , trying to replace thermal paste? ATI powerplay in battery setting ? Maybe you have similar problem as gp11 has.
How long after warranty this one is ?

    thanks.

i never found a solution. a re-paste would probably help a little, but the heat was mostly concentrated on the side where the fins are, as it should be. usually when the paste goes bad the heat sinks through the whole mainboard and warms up the whole machine.

fact is, the nvs3100 is a power hog, with little to gain over the intel 4000 solution. i think the only reason they used the nvidia was because the high resolution screen.

the other day, i bought a 8560w for $200!! i couldnt believe it, the guy broke the battery latch and didnt want to mess with it. i just taped the battery in, and it works great. im selling that 8440p.

now, i would definitely still buy an 8440p again, but only with the intel video. theres no reason to have a faster gpu when you dont play games, and the battery life is such a valuable thing.

Yes, parameters are correct (you need 90W for nvidia graphics, but it is better even if you have intel video)

Thanks. Tried - seems OK. Just was wondering about one slight difference, on PPP012H-S it is written that output voltage is 18.5V and on stock charger - 19V.

I think all hp elitebooks are tolerant on input - think it should be 18.5-19.5. It was like that for long on the business series.

Anyway on the quickspecs you can see that different psu are either 18.5 or 19, so 100% OK

Where can I obtain a weight saver for my EliteBook 8440p and other HP business class notebooks in general? Where do I get the part numbers?

    Howdy...

I have a chance to get what I consider to be a great deal on an 8440p right now, and then I was going to make it better with a RAM upgrade to 8GB (the max), toss one of those Samsung 840 EVO SSDs (the brand new ones), and upgrade the CPU to an i7-720QM on the cheap (pulled CPU from a parts machine, and yes it works).

There doesn't seem to be much if any content or discussion about the 8440p at all here, which I found surprising to some degree which leads me to ask "Is there something about this particular model that I should be aware of or avoid since it doesn't seem to be very popular?"

Just curious, since they're all over eBay these days (probably tons of them coming off leases/out of warranty) and I found one I'm interested in (lacking a bunch of the extras like BT, WWAN, etc, but I can add those later).

But since there's so little mention or discussion - I mean this thread alone is a mere 14 pages or so compared to other machines with over 100 which appears to be a good indicator of popularity. This 8440p seems like one hell of a little powerhouse when it's configured correctly (this one has the Nvidia Quadro NVS 3100M which is fine by me for video and a 1600x900 panel in it, not that lame 1366x768 crap). I do some light/hobbyist 3D rendering work so that's a big plus over the Intel GPU found on the 8440p in some configs.

    Am I missing something? :)

I also want to switch to 8440p with i7, quadro and ssd like you and think there should be anything to worry about in advance ;)
Maybe the popularity on the threads depends on number of problems/issues with the laptops. So maybe the less, the better. Have you seen any faulty non-damaged 8440p's (or mobo's) on ebay? If not too many then it's good too.
It seems to me that since the first elitebook series (I own 6930p, still enough for me, the generation before 8440p) they improved quality/durability and these machines may really last longer unlike previous series that developed motherboard faults

Yah, I just figured since there's hardly anything aside from this lone thread (and a few others I suppose) that it turned out to be some flaky or crappy product in particular and everyone moved to another model for some reason. Anyway, I ended up getting one that is pretty much "fully loaded" with almost everything that could be thrown into it:

    - i5-520M (considering a quad upgrade but it only has the i7-720QM and i7-740QM as options, and based on benchmarks that I just read not an hour ago, the i5-520M is actually the better CPU overall because of single thread performance as well as a lot lower power usage, so it ends up being almost the same at 2.4GHz with 2 cores 4 threads that the i7 quads have with 4 cores 8 threads at slower clockspeed)
    - 4GB of DDR3 1333 but I intend to bump that to 8GB almost immediately when I get it
    - 250GB 7200 rpm hard drive but I intend to bump that to a 120GB or potentially a 240GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD as fast as I can
    - 14" 1600x900 display (can't tolerate that 1366x768 crap)
    - Nvidia Quadro NVS 3100M (pretty much the stock GPU for these laptops it seems, far more popular than the Intel 4000 option on the lowest end models in the 8440p series)
    - WWAN card (just not sure which one it is, and I do intend to make use of it)
    - going to swap out the dual layer DVD drive for a Blu-ray I found for $20 a few weeks ago, was shocked at the price but it should work without issues, if not it's no big deal I suppose, I just rip/encode my Blu-rays to MKV files anyway
    - original 90 watt adapter and 6 cell battery (will have to check the battery wear when it arrives, if it's pretty low, say 25-50% I may pass on getting another battery right at the moment, considering the 12 cell extended as well)

All for $275 + shipping. I see a lot of these on eBay right now but none of them were this "fully loaded" and others that came close were still commanding $400+ so I think it'll be a fantastic machine. Already working on creating an HP Windows 7 Pro x64 disc to do a clean install on that SSD when it comes in, can't wait. ;)

I'm a big fan of older hardware because it's still functional. I'm also a fan because all current generation laptops, every single one of them that I've laid my eyes on in the past year, every last model from every manufacturer, just suck IMO. I can't find anything that's brand new that I find appealing or interesting in any way, shape, or form - well, there is one single laptop that's somewhat nice: that Galago Ultrapro from System76, but I can't do a 14.1" LCD panel at 1920x1080, my eyes just can't tolerate that, too old nowadays. :)

Got the 8440p today, had some issues with overheating which is not to blame the seller - they just picked up a ton of them from some off-lease auction I believe and did the most basic checks and clean install of the OS before packing them up for shipping, etc. Anyway, I did the typical pull the keyboard/switch cover, found some rather nasty gunk on the fan blades and knew what to expect. Shined an LED flashlight into the blades and tried to see through the primary exhaust vent on the left side which of course was blocked off by a somewhat thick (like 1/8", seriously) "carpet" of gunk/dirt/dust/hair/sand/whatever. Pulled that off, used a toothbrush to clean off the rest then blew pressurized air into the outside vent and was greeted with that "PUFF" of dust/dirt as it flies outta there.

Put it back together and it's been running like a champ ever since. Core Temp shows an idle temp of about 46C which is a bit high I suppose but I live in Las Vegas, it's bit ridiculously humid of late with rain off and on + clouds every day for the past month. Kinda crazy since it's supposed to be the desert here, I mean really.

Got an i7-740QM on order, should be here Friday, looking at 2x4GB of RAM but haven't decided on which to buy at the moment, and then I'm staring hard at that insanely fast Samsung 840 EVO that's fairly new. Cheaper than the 840 Pro series and offers like 95% of the performance for considerable savings. Should do pretty nicely in this 8440p even though it'll be hamstrung by the SATA II controller. Hell, 275MB/s reads and writes, random access times around 0.005ms, and the lowest idle power usage any SSD has these days (from what I read in a review, it's like it's not even on when it's idling) without ever skipping a beat is far better than some old 7200 rpm hard drive sucking down a lot of power for slow passable performance, right? :D

So far so good... I can even play the only game I've been interested in messing with the past few years: Mirror's Edge, which played great on the Quadro NVS 3100M earlier without me even having to alter the default graphics options and at 1600x900 as well. AWESOME. ;)

I finally able to get the VFS451 biometric device to work without using the 4.3.100.0 driver! Tested on a x64 system, not sure if it will work on x32.

    Elitebook 8440p
    Windows 8 x64

Prior to the installation, it is best to uninstall HP Protect and/or any fingerprint handler. Also, make sure your biometric is listed as “Unknown Device” under Device Manager.

    1. Download the validity driver from HP
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=ob-84050-1

    2. After the installation completes, uninstall the Validity driver from the control panel, leaving the Validity WBF DDK untouched.

    3. Download this driver
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...lc=en&jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0004

    4. Run the installer and after the extraction process, abort the installation.

    5. Open up device manager and click on the “Unknown Device” and select update driver. This is where you will have to navigate to the previously extracted files which will be placed by default in the C:\SWSETUP\sp60754 folder.

    6. Download and install HPLite32_build_6.0.100.252.zip
    http://support.authentec.com/Downloads/DownloadManager.aspx?EntryId=27

    7. Extract and install away

    8. Reboot your PC

    9. Open up HP Simple Pass and setup your fingerprint.

Hope this helps anyone who are not able to locate the 4.3.100.0 driver"

if links doesn't work look for the files by name on the HP site ;)
