Keep your i5 on hand. I did the CPU upgrade several months ago with that same i7. Immediately after installation, the thermal protection kicked in and shut everything down. Every time.
I have done the full copper mod on this machine, including realigning the heatpipe and contact surfaces (where HP really dorked it up). Normal temps with the i5 are around 38 gpu and 32 CPU. Normal use with some multitasking will see high 40s/low 40s respectively. Even some gaming (minecraft & stalker) and I never see 85 deg. After going back to the i5, no problems. Try the i7 if you want to, but be very careful. IMHO, the 520 CPU is the best for this machine.

Hello to everyone. I have a HP 8440p with the following problem:
The display has a big sparkling effect like many IPS Panels e.g. my Dell U2412M. It is very unsharp. Now I am interested in changing the panel. I have the AUO123E panel, the model number is B140RW01 V.2. Have all the AUO panel the sparkling problem? I think, that this is caused by a bad AntiGlare Coating. Many people remove this coating because of this problem.
Also there should be a Samsung and LG panel on the market for the HP 8440p. The samsung model number should be LTN140KT02, but they are very expensive and hard to get, compared to the AUO panel.
Has somebody the same problem and has already changed his panel to an Samsung, LG or an AUO? I would be glad if I get same help. -
I am intrigued by the fact that the 8440p/w was one of the first laptops to use embedded display port (eDP) instead of LVDS. eDP is finally starting to become mainstream now so there are lots of nice panels available that might be an awesome upgrade.
I haven't been able to find any specs on the motherboard or cable though. A 1920x1080 14" panel requires 2 lane eDP.
The specs on the panels of the 8440p show they are 1 lane, but does anyone know if the motherboard and cable are 2 lane eDP? -
It would be great, if the Thinkpad T440s panel would be useable, but i think it will not fit. Is the HP 8460p Panel compatible? This should be better.
There are the specs for the AUO123E panel:

If we had a spec sheet for the motherboard that gave details about the number of lanes in the eDP connector we would know more. The only spec sheets I can find don't say. Even if the cable wasn't 2 lane but the motherboard had all the traces run we could most likely find a cable from a newer model that would work. Kind of speculating here, but it has happened before, for example with the ProBook 4530s 1080p upgrade where a 4730s cable could be used. -
Is there any better HD+ Panel for the HP 8440p which works plug and play? I hate the AUO Panel for the sparkling effect. I would be satisfied with a HD+ Panel.

There are the three original panel types:
Samsung LTN140KT02
LG LP140WD1 (TP)(D1)
AU OPTRONICS B140RW01 V.2
I haven't found the samsung panel nowhere, so I bought the LG panel in ebay. The sparkling is away now, but I think the contrast is a bit worse. But the colours are horrible, the panel has a violet colour cast. Has somebody a colour correction file for the LG panel? -
Hello fellow 8440p owners,
In need of a laptop I bought a 8440p last week for 140 euro (approx. 175 USD).
This is the base-model with 520m, 320 gb hdd, no graphic card and standard display, but with 4 instead of 2gb RAM (which I may upgrade to 8 gb).
In the past I have owned quite a few HP business laptops and bought many more for relatives of mine. Some of them are of the 'destructive kind', but these notebooks are really built to withstand some serious abuse. Apart from an ancient NC8420W (died last year after many years of operation under quite harsh conditions), all laptops are still fully functional today. Not all Elitebooks and predecessors are equally reliable. Evidently the higher specced machines with dedicated graphics tend to run hot which will negatively affect the lifespan of several internal components.
This was one of the main reasons to opt for integrated graphics, even more since Intel HD graphics will suffice for basic video and graphic tasks, even with hd content.
I might exchange the 1366x768 display for the 1600x900 from AU Optronics, which is available for around 40 USD.
Has anybody experience with this screen? I wonder if the improvements are worth the hassle. -
Can I upgrade 1600x900 screen on 8440p to some 1920x1080 which could be found now
thanks? -
Hi there,
i got a 8440p and want to know if an Intel 520 SSD fits into it. The Intel 520 SSD got a height of 9,5mm.
Edit:
Ok, i found the answer. If you look at the hardrive specification it says max. 9,5mm.
