I think I have the same problem. The laptop won't power on if I insert the battery before the AC plug. If I leave it out, or connect AC first, it starts up. It says it's charged 96%, and HP Battery Check also doesn't find any problem, but the moment I unplug it, it dies.
What's strange as well is that if I insert the battery without AC plugged in, the charging LED lights up (white) and flashes in amber about once every second. In this state, neither the power button nor the web browser button have any effect.
If I plug it in and then insert the battery, nothing lights up. If I then unplug it again, leaving the battery in, still nothing lights up. Then, the power button still doesn't do anything, but the web browser button causes the power LED to light up for about 3 seconds, then it turns off again and the charging LED lights up in white and flashes in amber about 3 times a second. In this state, it's impossible to turn it on, even after plugging it in and removing the battery. It has to be completely disconnected to start up again.
Does yours behave the same way? Any ideas what could be wrong? I also tried a co-worker's battery, and it behaves the same way in my laptop.
Edit: I also updated the BIOS to the latest version, which didn't help.

i am looking to upgrade the RAM on my 8460p from 4GB to 16GB. I have been looking at various manufacturers website, crucial, kingston, corsair etc.....
I would like to know what others are using, their experiences and advice -
I am wondering if i should update my BIOS to the current version (F61). The version on my computer as of now is F22 12/22/2011. I bought this laptop second hand about a year ago, So i dont know if has ever been updated? Looking back at older posts, it seems the BIOS has had numerous updates over the years, and i dont know how they correspond exactly to dates.
My computer is running fine, and it may be that i dont need the added functionality of the current update, however...
I want to upgrade my RAM.
My girlfriend has a an 8460p, identical to mine. I took out the 4GB dimm out of hers, and put it in mine, to give mine a total of 8GB. But the computer wouldnt even boot at all. Hers had a slighlty different part number, but i would think it should have worked?
The reason i am wondering if this has to do with the BIOS, is because in an older post on this forum, someone said they fitted two corsair DIMMs 8GBx2 and the computer wouldnt boot.. when one dIMM was removed, then it booted as normal.
So maybe it has do with the BIOS?
Also, i am running windows 10 pro 64bit. Theres no support for this operating system listed on HP's site...so i am wondering if this will also have an affect on a BIOS update? -
I recently bought a 8460p to upgrade with my old laptop CPU, an i7 2720QM. So far had been a nightmare.
After i made the upgrade, he starts all fine for the first time, but after i restart he starts to blink the Caps Lock and Number Lock. This happens every time that i make a change in the hardware, because if i remove a DIMM, he starts fine the first time and blinks the next one.
The message of the blinking code is: The embedded controller has timed out waiting for the BIOS.
I try to upgrade the BIOS, but after 3 hours of black screen i had to turn it off. It shows to have the latest BIOS, but the blinking continues unfortunately.
Can someone help me with this? -
I see in the service manual that there is different motherboards for different CPUs. What was the old processor?
-
The original CPU is a i5 2520M, without dedicated graphic card.
The motherboard is the 642759-001, the one with vPro, WLAN, WWAN and USB 3.0.
Can be a problem with the BIOS?Last edited: Feb 23, 2016 -
I have been using the 8460p (i5 vpro) for the past 4 years. I recently upgraded it with 16GB RAM and a 480GB Sandisk Ultra II SSD. It is a brand new laptop now!

Hello,
please i need advice:
What can I expect if I accept an offer and upgrade 8460p i5-2520 with i7-2670qm?
1) Higher idle and full-load temperature than i5?
2) What about turbo, is it working?
Using my 8460p for programming and office and my idle temp are 45-50c.Last edited: Apr 10, 2016 -
Hey everyone,
I own a 8470P and so far i am very pleased with its performance. I searched for 8470P thread but it is locked and i am looking for some advice. I like everything about this laptop except the internal speakers. Even my phone sounds louder and better than it. Could you suggest me any compatible better and louder internal speakers as an upgrade for my 8470P ? -
Hey everyone,
I own a 8460P
Can someone tell me or link me the safiest method (or a step-by-step guide) to update the bios?
If I dowload the bios I found this instruction (that don't help me...):
This package includes several methods for updating the BIOS version, as follows:
- Use the HPQFlash Utility to update the BIOS directly in a Microsoft Windows Operating System environment.
- Create a bootable USB Key to update the system BIOS.
- Use System Software Manager (SSM) to update the system BIOS on target PCs in a network.
Depending on the desired update method, complete either of the Following steps:
a) To update the BIOS using HPQFlash or to create a bootable disk on key, double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
b) To use HP System Software Manager (SSM) to update the BIOS on notebooks/laptops in a network, copy the downloaded file to the file store and then run the SSM software.
I suppose the safiest way is to create a bootable usb key... but these "on-screen instructions" which are? Is there any video or picture?
thanks -
Hey everyone,
I have an integrated graphics 8460p, is it possible for me to put the AMD graphics motherboard in my 8460p (And reuse the CPU, RAM etc. of course)? If it is could you tell me the AMD graphics motherboard's model number too? Thanks. -
Link to the service manual is in the previous page.

Part number for AMD graphics mobo: 642754-001
Part number for discrete graphics heatsink: 642767-001 -
Along with numbers for all the other parts you may require.
Since you asked for the mb part number I thought you might want to see all the possibilities. -

Another thing I was interested in:
I was looking at the i7-2630qm as it was the cheapest quad on ebay. However I'd like to know if anyone has successfully run a quad in an 8460p that has the HD6470m in it, I'm aware that just the i7 quad on its own is okay (from earlier posts), but I get the feeling the single heatpipe wouldn't be suitable for a GPU and a quad i7 at the same time. Can anyone who's tried it confirm if it works well? (Meaning under 80c on both CPU and GPU under load.) -

Also from this site: http://benyouhui.it168.com/thread-5473169-1-1.html
The guy was selling his 8460p with i7-2720QM (upgraded from i5-2430M) and HD 6470M, in point no.3 he mentioned it has been used as a server for 3 months without any problem so I guess the extra 10W TDP isn't an issue. -

Got the board already somehow (1 week from china to UK is almost impossible but it happened) and I swapped the new board in just fine. Hoping I can sell the old board and get enough to cover at least half the cost of a i7-2630qm.

Hey guys, so I was sold a HP 8460p off ebay that has some damage to the back corner. It looks that the laptop was dropped and this was something I wasn't told about when purchasing the item. Long story short, I got my refund from the seller and now I am trying to replace the damaged items and bring this HP 8460p back to life.
So looking at it, I will need the whole bottom base and the top palmrest and the left side hinge.
Looking at ebay for used parts, there are a few replacement bottom base's as well as some palmrests but they identify a different part number. I'm unsure the part number I have but I am having a hard time understanding why would these items not be the same. Sure, newer ones may have some revisions but would the top and bottom parts not be the same?
The 8460p that I have has the i7 processor and 'SS' usb ports if that matters.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated -
I do not know for sure that what you are looking at on eBay is what you need, but I do know that HP at least often has different part numbers for the replacement parts than for the parts in the original builds. For instance, I have a keyboard for an 8740w which reads: "MODEL 598044-001" and "SPARES 597582-001." Once you take apart the computer, you may read the solution to your mystery.

Thanks for the reply.
I was able to use the HP Spare parts list with my current serial number and find the part numbers for the palmrest/bottom cover and outer hinge covers.
I replaced them and the laptop is looking good again -
Hello,
Is it possible to install Win7x64 with UEFI and GPT partition scheme? I am trying but no success.. -

hello. Is it possible to use any DDR3 1333 sticks with these laptop? my local crucial supplier only has pairs supposedly for Macbooks. I looked at the spec sheet on the crucial website for the "Macbook-only" sticks and it's similar to the ones for the 8460p.
thanks -
Hey guys, I've had my 8460P a couple years now and I really enjoy using it.
I've maxed the RAM at 16GB 1333MHz - Swapped my i5-2540M for an i7-2760QM,
Boot Windows 10 from a Crucial M550 SSD - 128GB,
Taken the optical drive out and put a second OCZ 256GB SSD to boot to Mac OS X Sierra.
Taken the bottom access door off for extra cooling as I don't travel much.
Only quibbles are the poncey little light next to my webcam (why did they not just backlight the keyboard?)
(And has anyone had any success stories in modding the keyboard to be backlit?)
Also, will I benefit from swapping the mainboard I have (HD Graphics 3000) for the Radeon 6470M dedicated graphics? Have read numerous threads online saying it's not worth the hassle for the minimal performance difference, but I just want to be sure I've got the best possible setup.
Were the DreamColour screens available for the 8460P? If so, I'd be interested in getting one as I've used an 8760W and I want to get one to replace my 8460P, but I've plunged so much money into it that I don't want to part with it.
Also read online that people are putting these in their machines; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-HS2340...608957&hash=item33c4780d67:g:xckAAOSw-0xYSUaa - does this in any way help WiFi speeds?
Thanks in advance. I've also got 2 x i5-2540M CPU's if people are looking for spares. -
3G or 4G modem has no effect on WiFi speeds
I used one 8460p as my work machine, upgraded it to 8470p when I had a chance. Eventually ditched both, because with Windows 10 the wwan kept dying to the point where only windows reinstall woke it. After I explained situation to my boss rather colourfully I got t450s Thinkpad as my current work laptop. For home I bought 840 G2 with IPS display. -
Is it possible to convert an 8460p to an 8470p?
-
2 days ago my laptop started having an issue where I cannot boot from the built-in storage. No problems when booting using a USB stick and I was able to install Ubuntu on the SSD.
Another problem is that when I try to get into the BIOS, all I see is system diagnostics. I ran the diagnostics and no issue was found.
I've removed the RTC/CMOS battery (left it unconnected for more than 10 seconds) and no positive impact.
Any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks -
Does anyone who's still around know if the latest BIOS update F.67 has SATA III enabled?
Thanks!
