The laptop with overheat with the kind of processor. I have the same laptop with a 2670qm and it really heats up. It will throttle since it has no incoming air to cool off the heat sink.

    Hi there,

I know this thread has been around for some time (I just read through most of it) and I've got a chance to get an 8460p in near mint condition, i5 2520M, 4GB, 500GB drive, ATI GPU, etc, fairly stock(ish) machine I suppose but, it should provide a nice boost in performance over my aging but still very much beloved Dell Latitude E6400. Having said that, I do have a few questions I was hoping anyone with experience might be able to answer:

    1) Obviously the CPU is upgradeable on the 8460p, but I'm wondering if a lot of people seem to have pushed to the quads instead of sticking with dual core (i7 vs i5 basically). I checked on some CPU performance benchmarks and yes there's of course going to be a difference but, I just wondered if anyone using the i5 (specifically the 2520M) can speak on performance and whether or not they were or still are satisfied with it.

    2) I know HP has the silly BIOS whitelist for wireless cards just like Lenovo does (no I'm not asking for where to get patched BIOS files, I can find those myself if needed and if they exist) - was going to ask about performance of the wireless card that came with the 8460p by default, I think it's the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 802.11a/b/g/n (at least that's what was in the review model AnandTech had). Is that a decent wireless card, if anyone can comment? I'd be coming from the Intel 5100 which is much older, just curious about the overall Wi-Fi performance/signal quality/speeds with the stock card if anyone can comment.

    3) Apparently the 8460p comes with the Intel QM67 chipset so it should offer SATA III support easily but I saw a bunch of posts earlier in this thread where it seems HP decided not to "officially" support SATA III devices of any kind and disabled the SATA III support in the BIOS early on, but reneged on that later and enabled it with an option in the BIOS for 3 or 6 Gbps support. I guess my question is that the BIOS version mentioned were in the F.2x series (F.20, F.22, F.27, and F.28 I saw mentioned several times) but it appears the latest BIOS available is actually F.50 REV. A
(9 Aug 2014) so, the basic question is this: does the latest BIOS still offer the SATA III support option in the BIOS or did HP reneg yet once more and pull that totally? I can't see anyplace to download older BIOS files; I suppose if I did a lot of research I could track down specific SoftPak numbers to find the one but, I also saw something about reaching a point where the 8460p won't let you install an older BIOS because of some type of security or lock-down mechanism in place (I could be very wrong about that, might have misread/misunderstood what the person was trying to say).

Downside to the one I'm looking at is the horrid 1366x768 resolution of the screen but aside from that the machine appears to be in outstanding condition overall, barely has 10% battery wear (as measured with BatteryBar). I haven't committed to the purchase yet, it's just $125 which I think is literally a steal and I'd really like to get it, so if anyone is able to offer any advice I'd appreciate it.

I can't afford a brand new smokin' powerful machine so, I have to take whatever comes my way when it does and I think this could be a nice solid machine for at least a while.

    I appreciate any responses, thanks...

I have i5 2540m model and I don´t have any problem with speed. I think it is fast enough for most people.
Wireless card is that centrino advanced, I have 100mb internet in my home and I connect it with wlan and I can fully use it. So I think it is enough too :)
And it also work very far away, some places in my home where all other devices what I use say no wireless available, 8460p work nice.
I have new bios and there is option to chose 3gb and 6gb. I just installed new ssd and it changed that option itself to that 6gb speed.
Sry my english, I hope you understand something :D

Anyway, 8460p is wonderful laptop, just add some memory more and change ssd and it is really fast.

A 8460p with i5 2540m landed on my lap few days ago.

Almost three years old (like few weeks left on 3 year warranty) and batterybar shows 0% wear. This thing has sat on the docking station the whole time, keyboard looks like new...
I already have plans: ditch the optical drive for hdd caddy/ssd and perhaps FHD display replacement but before doing that I'm going to look for IPS options if I find one. Perhaps 9 cell battery.

If it only had dGPU but I cannot really complain since the price was right. Extremely right :)

I'm pretty sure that would work. I just moved my desktop ssd from 2008 C2D mainboard to 2014 haswell refresh mb and everything just works so well that I haven't yet bothered to reinstall OS.

I just got an 8460p a few days ago, spent some with it. It's got an i7 2620M, 8GB RAM, and I threw in my 512GB MX100 SSD. 1600x900. This thing is awesome. Will use it as my laptop for a while now! Updated it to latest BIOS, (F.50), it runs at SATA III.

    Good; I would really hate being forced to reinstall the OS;
BTW what do you mean by " refresh mb" ?

Haswell refresh cpu's are the latest Intel offers. They are natively supported by 9-series motherboards, in my case Z97. So basically I jumped something like 6-7 generations of chipsets from P35 to Z97 without reinstall, just couple reboots. I was mentally prepared to do reinstall so I just fired up the machine and suprised to see it work just fine.

It is desktop. Principle is the same, as long as OS boots it is probably possible to make it work. Actual results may vary :D

Change from 8460p to 8470p is just one step in cpu revision and chipset also changes from QM67 to QM77. With latest intel chipset drivers installed it should work just fine. Then update rest of the stuff as needed.

edit: What's forbidden to use in my 8460p? I won't tell anyone... :p

    probably it's a good idea to duplicate the disk and give it a try;
I really can't take any chances... I need to get it working w/o reinstalling the OS.

Thanks for caring, but after getting them still the mic and fingerprint sensor can't be used (fingerprint is not working with windows 8 i think because hp protect tools isn't compatible)

What I wouldn't do for the science...

I just got my hands on 8470p so OF COURSE I had to try switching the hdd from my 8460p. :D

At first boot, vga/chipset, usb3 chip, intel network, wwan did not install.
At second boot, wlan started to work.
Then I started HP Softpaq Download Manager and let it install missing drivers and updates.

This is on Windows 7. So far looking really good. Still waiting for all the installations to finish.

Bit late I know, but considering getting an 8460p and upgrading:

    160GB HDD to a 128GB SSD
DVD drive to a 2.5 caddy
    1TB HDD inside the caddy
    4GB ---> 8GB RAM
    Cant upgrade the 802.11n card to 802.11ac (I think? :( )
Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8 Home
Maybe get a new battery for it as it's four years old!
Re-apply thermal paste with IC diamond 7

The cost of the laptop is £150. Any good? Cost after upgrades pushes it to around £305

I just bought a 2nd hand 8460p and noticed that it actually performs worse than my old HP Pavillion G6.

The specs for the two are as follows:
    old G6
    -Core i3 370m
    -4gb ram
    -intel hd
    -Windows 7 Home Premium

    new 8460p
    -Core i5 2520m
    -4gb ram
    -ati radeon 6470
-Windows 7 Professional to Home Premium

I had thought that perhaps the performance was due to a corrupt installation of Windows 7 or something software based. But after having found the Pavilion's performance to exceed that of the 8460p's, I swapped hard drives before giving away the Pavilion and found that the performance discrepancy remained the same. That is, the Elitebook was still underperforming compared to the Pavilion with the Core i3 370m. I'm wondering if there might be some setting that I can verify in the BIOS that can help remedy this.

I'm also basing my assessment on computer behavior, namely the response time between keystrokes, mouse clicks on the start button(time elapsed between click and displaying of start menu). It's painfully noticeable. The "Windows Experience Index" score seems consistent with what I'd expect, but unforunately is inconsistent with the split to possibly even one second(or more) delays that occur between my typing something and the letters displaying on screen. I don't think that this would be hardware issue but am game to fire up any recommended diagnosis tools. Thank you!

Hi all, Just picked up one of these for cheap, just a standard i5 version but I have pop in an extra 4GB ram. Runs very well, I have loaded Windows 10 preview and it's very smooth. Looking at upgrading to an SSD and possibly more RAM to beef it up more. Very happy with it.

I am not able to boot up my HP Elitebook 8460p. The screen stays black. Not even the POST screen shows.
When I press the power button the WIFI, HDD and the Power LEDs go on. Also the fan starts.
The HDD LED turns off after few seconds.

I tried various suggestions from the Internet such as removing the battery and disconnecting from the AC. Pressing the power button for about 60 seconds and only connecting the AC cable.
I also removed the memory modules one by one.

Any suggestion on how I can bring back my beloved laptop to life?

Ok. I'm a little late to this party but I have a problem here.

First, I have the 5 led blinks at startup. I see that's looking like a system board failure. Are there any known fixes or problems with this 5 blink problem or is it 100% motherboad failed?

It really started giving me problems when i upgraded the bios to F.60 on HP.com. Mouse started jumping. But this could also be due to the failing board and have nothing to do with the bios updgrade.

It will sign into Windows sometimes but only for about 10 min or so then an all blue screen saying hardware malfunction please contact your vendor or w/e. No error codes just that. Even in the BIOS after awhile it just freezes.

So could this be anything else before I toss it or is it def a system board failure?

    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01732674
(just in case someone googles these posts later)

My work 8460p sometimes just blinks all leds when I bring it up from sleep/hibernation but that's something like once a month.

Since that is such a general error, there isn't much to do. Replace or remove everything, ram/cpu/wireless/bt cards and test exensively if they have any effect. Of course that would require actually having spare parts or another suitable donor laptop.

If you plan to keep the computer, I think someone did 8460->8470 mainboard upgrade. This is a good excuse to get even better computer ;)

Thanks. Yeah I would like to fix it and not trash it.

I forgot to add before. I have tried switching out the ram and bought a new fan for it. I have not tried switching out the cpu. That might be the last part to try and hopefully it will be a fix. I just figured there is a separate code for the CPU failing and not the 5 LED blinks. But who knows. I don't have another i5 to test it but I have a bunch of other cpu. Hopefully I can find one that works even if it's just a downgrade from the i5 to test it really quick. I'll have to look into what socket is compatible when I get the time. I just basically wanted to know if there was a chance it could be the CPU or anything else other than a dead MB.

From service manual pdf available at HP website:

For use in computers with vPro (8M), WLAN, with WWAN, and 1-GB graphics 642754-001

For use in computers with vPro (8M), WLAN, WWAN, and USB 3.0 ports 642759-001

I'm not 100% certain but my guess is that 1GB graphics is AMD HD6470M and none means intel HD3000.

    There is also:
For use in computers with vPro (8M), WLAN, with WWAN, 1-GB graphics, and USB
    3.0 ports
    670123-001

If you upgrade to AMD GPU then you'll need different heatsink too.
    (16) Heat sink (includes replacement thermal material)
For use in models with UMA graphics 642766-001
For use in models with discrete graphics 642767-001

Thanks. Thinking about just sticking with the original Intel 759 board.

On the previous page someone mentioned that they did an upgrade from the 8460p board to 8470. I noticed the 8470 is a 14.1''. Will that be an issue? The boards are pretty much the same price for the 759 and the 8470 so I would definitely do that instead of switching to AMD

Any MX100/200, M550, 840/850 PRO/EVO or Sandisk Extreme Pro are good.
Just buy the cheapest you can find out of all of these or go to AnandTech for comparisons to see if the others are worth the extra money.
Again if it is just for normal use just pick the cheapest because they are all very good.

    Hello all!

My ~3 years old 8460p's fan is starting to rattle, so i thought i replace it. I have an i7-2670qm without dgpu inside the notebook. When i heavily use the notebook, the temperature is rising up to 83-85°C (the idle temps are around 45°C). I know the limit is 100°C, but it's still hot.
So, instead of replacing the fan, i thought i will it upgrade if i can. So, my question is: Do you know any fan, which is compatible with the 8460p, but better? I though, maybe the workstations have better fan, but i dont know if they are compatible.

    Thank you,
    gabrit

I have no idea about the fan, but if I were you, I would make use of the opportunity to also replace existing thermal paste (e.g. on the cpu). Three years is a decent interval to do so.

Replace both heatsink and fan (afterall, they are often sold together). Heatpipes in the heatsink sometimes become less efficient in transferring heat.

Throw in a good thermal paste too.

There is no extra work related if you change just the rattling fan vs. heatsink too :)

Has anybody run into this same issue? Soon after receiving the computer back from RMA, these vertical lines started appearing and got worse and worse until it became nearly a solid vertical bar. The last images are some weird thing the display is doing when bringing the computer out of sleep mode. It seems to be related to when I had the computer hooked up to an external monitor via VGA, and then switched between the various display modes (clone/dual-monitor/etc).

I've received some really terrible customer service from HP, and as a result am considering no longer buying HP business line stuff. I sent this computer in to have a dent fixed (that came with the computer when it was brand new) and a faulty power button, and got the machine back with nothing actually fixed. Then after sending me back an unfixed computer, they refused to do another RMA because the warranty had just ended.

    Hi Guys
    I have a strange problem with my 8460p I haven't figured out.
The computer does no longer powers on with the battery inserted.
If I remove the battery and do a reset by holding the power button down then use the ac adapter all works fine.
When the computer is running I can insert the battery which is recognised.
It reports a good charge (92%) and says it's charging.
HP Battery Check finds no problem with the battery.
However if I try to start up with the battery inserted and no AC I get nothing and if I plug in the AC still nothing.
I have to remove the battery, press and hold the power button to reset and then run it from AC fine.
I bought a new battery via Ebay and the problem is the same.

So no power is getting from the battery to the laptop even though the laptop reports that it can recharge the battery no problem.

Is this requiring a new system board or is there something easier that I'm missing?

Many thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I've seen lots of those. That is a bad panel.
Luckily it is easy to replace yourself. Unfortunately selection of good 14" panels is non-existent.

    Hi Guys,

I have a strange problem, I can't find replacements for the damaged rubber feets! Can You suggest if there are some other models with compatible feets?

    Thanks.

    Service manual, page 43:
Rubber Kit (includes rubber feet and rubber screw covers)
For use with model 8460p/w 642768-001

and a google search with that part number gives, for example:
    http://www.amazon.com/HP-642768-001-Rubber-kit-enclosure/dp/B006JXI76Q
    http://www.techpartswarehouse.com/product/HP-642768-001-HP-8460P-8460W-Rubber-Kit-32611.cfm
    http://www.mk-electronic.de/eng/items/show/642768-001N
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/642768-001-HP-SPS-RUBBER-KIT-8460p-8460w-/231527143672

Few of the links around the world, if they don't work for you there is probably more. Or ask your local computer parts store to look for that part number.

Thanks for the info. Then a curiosity question to avoid trowing money on the wind. I had looked into that part number too and that is my doubt, if You follow any of the given links You will actually see the screws covers but not a single notion/foto of the rubber feets :(. It is just the way the fotos are made or there is some inconsistency? Have anyone ordered that kit?

it might be the cable on the lcd which connects the lcd to the motherboard or some gpu problems

I had similar problem. So try to start it with the key, that starts the browser, the middle one on the upper right corner. If it works, you could try to update your bios and it might fix the problem. After the update i don't have any problem like this.

Im glad I found a place for support if need be! Im in love with my 8460p. It's everything and more I could ask for in an everyday PC. Im an engineering student, so the portability and robustness of this laptop is awesome. Im running windows 10, an i7 2620m, 8gb ram and I recently upgraded to a 500gb hybrid drive. As far as performance per $ the hybrid drive was the best mod ive done thus far on my machine.

I bought this 8460p like 7 days ago, I have been really happy with it so far :) I needed some more portable laptop than my previous ProBook 6570b :) I put SSD Crucisl M550 and it is really fast. The only thing that doesn't work is the night light.
