If you are mostly docked at work and use your car to carry the extra 1.5 pounds, then why not improve on the 8560p screen and wait 30 days for the 8560w with the even better diagonal LED-backlit WVA anti-glare, FHD (1920 x 1080) for when you are undocked?

I'm a screen snob too and trying to figure out what to buy for the 10% of laptop time that is undocked.

Yea I thought about waiting for the 8560W and getting the dreamcolor IPS display but I was given a budget of around 3000 and that would mean I would have to give up the nice 24inch IPS external monitor I also ordered. In addition I also added a solid state drive. So I just need a notebook with a decent enough screen that is not going to make me pissed off looking at it for the 10% of the time it is undocked. From the reviews on the 8540p the 1600x900 screen looks pretty good with a very high contrast. I am hoping it's sufficient and I won't be disappointed. I should get the laptop in about a week so look for my review on the other thread.

    Just information:

    HP 8560p: 14.7 x 9.9 x 1.34 and 6.1 Lb ( 90W Power Brick )

    HP 8560w: 15 x 10.1 x 1.36 / 1.44 (if DreamColor FHD) and 6.7 Lb ( 170W Power Brick )

P.S: I do have 8740w in my office with 170W Power Brick , and I think power brick will be the same 170W on new workstations line, this is biggest power brick on the planet and looks like real construction brick :) (and second in all time context after HP 230W extream edition power brick) :)

So I guess you are suggesting that the 8560w will be about 2 lbs heavier in the bag than the 8560p... including the power brick.

I have both the 1366x768 laptop & 1600x900 laptop & I can say the text on the 1600 is horrible. ClearType does not do anything. Attached is a screenshot from the 1600x900 & one from a Dell Latitude E6410. The difference is a deal-breaker for me.

    I can see the difference.

Are you saying the 1366x768 is better on the 8460p for text? Contrast?

The 1366 is definitely better for text & the contrast on BOTH is very bad. I'd say there's about a 10 degree viewing angle where things are okay, but once you venture past that the contrast gets very bad very quickly.

Have you compared the new 8560p to the 8460p?

    No, I don't have the 8560p. I do have it's predecessor, the Core i5 first-gen & it's screen is even better than the 8460p 1366.

    Oh. really apriciate your thoughts!
What about brihtness comparison 1366x768 & 1600x900? Is 8460p with 1366x768 comfortable enough for the outside work?

Regarding the fact, that the difference is noticeable on a screenshot, I relate this problem to the graphic drivers. Otherwise, the same GPU output would create the same screenshot. So, did your 1600* 8460p had the Intel or the AMD GPU?

One question: did somebody with 8460p model, tried to disable ambilight sensor (in bios)?
Could this be one of the reasons for poor brightness?
I am not sure, but I think i heared with Lenovo the same issue...

    thanks for info.

I ordered i7-2720QM with just Intel HD 3000 and HD+.
Expectation for battery run time will be better in this system... something close to 25%...

Intel HD 3000 is in the same GPU class with AMD 6470M ( less than 10% difference in performance ).
Power Consumption of AMD 6470M = 20 Watt, this is a lot of power for laptop if you can't switch it off in 8460p.

I would be very interested to hear if anyone would consider weighing the 8460p with and without the AC adapter?

Often there is a fairly big difference between marketing specs and actual travel weights... Oh and please indicate the type of battery and AC adapter used.

    Thanks,

I edited some camera vids together (using about 25 short clips from skiing, underlining with music, Magix Video Deluxe 17) with my 8530p Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 without any performance problems. Resulting clips up to 20mins.
There was no problem there - but I use a Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB instead of a HDD, I guess that speeds it up more than the difference between a Dual to Quad SandyBridge CPU.

Has anyone tried outputting audio through the DisplayPort via the DisplayPort-HDMI adapter. This is a must feature for me. I intend to buy the one with the AMD discrete graphics and i7 processor.

it should be no problems with audio through displayport with hdmi adapter. I have test it with previous model 8440p, and it worked great.

yea i saw that review too. I wish they went into more of a review on the display but I guess they do hint the viewing angles suck. Plus they dont say if they have the 1600 x 900 or the the 1366 x 768 display. I believe they have the later since they mention running a bench mark in that resolution but its not confirmed. Anyways nothing new basically great notebook but its heavy and the display is a bit crappy

I am very surprised about battery life, 6 hours with amd dedicated graphics... I am not sure, that with Intel integrated we can get much more?

    Folks:

I ended up returning mine. The goods were still good -- video performance w/ the radeon card was good (I got 5060 on 3dmark, very close to the laptopmag review). Keyboard was good, though I prefer the thinkpad's by a hair. Trackpad was great -- I didn't have the troubles reported in the laptopmag article and the feel of it was good enough that I gave up on using the pencil eraser for the first time. Battery life was also good even w/ the radeon card -- I was getting 5+ hours w/ light use.

The screen was not great, and the only thing that ended up bugging me (once I turned off the damn ambient light sensor) was the vertical viewing angles. Unlike the laptopmag review, I had no issues w/ the horizontal angles. But the vertical was bad enough that if you had it on your lap and shifted position to reach for a beer, the colors were washed out and you had to fiddle w/ the angle. As a comparison, the screen was worse in this regard by a lot than my old x201s.

And personally, I didn't get used to the weight. With the 6 cell battery and cd drive, it's every bit of 5#, and that's about a pound heavy to sit in your lap and fiddle with (at least for me). If the screen had been good I would have kept it, but this plus the size was enough for me to beat a full retreat back to an x220. Not as much real estate on that, slower graphics performance for games, but an IPS screen and 3.6# w/ it's six cell battery.

So for those of you on the fence, I think if you mostly use a laptop sitting at a desk and don't have ideas you're going to use it on a couch, it's a great laptop as long as you have modest expectations for the screen. If you're thinking of this more as a semi-ultraportable, the screen plus the weight makes it less good than the x220 or the t420s (though the latter's lousy battery life and possibly worse screen make it a tough choice).

Don't know about the T420 but the T410 has the worst screen I have ever seen. My co worker has one and it looks like a screen back from the 90's when laptops first started coming out. ITS HORRIBLE!1 HORRID! UGLY NASTY CRAPPY. I was seriously considering a T420 till I saw the T410 screen in person. YUCK

Yup. The complaining on the lenovo forums about the T420 has been epic. So there's no way it's better than the 8460p. Plus, the battery life on the T420s (which is under 4#, and totally awesome) is really, really wretched. People are reporting 2.5 hours tops.

So if you want a 14" and you are ok w/ the screen, the 8460p is probably the best choice. It's just the vertical viewing angle is bad, bad bad...

He confirmed he has the 1366 x 768 based on the pre-config model mentioned.

He compared the 8460p to the Dell Latitude e6420, Toshiba Tecra R840 and the Fujitsu LifeBook S751 not the X220 or the T420. Does anyone have any experience with these other books?

bummer.. I could live with narrow horizontal viewing angles since you dont shift side to side as much. What a shame the vertical viewing angel is so horrible. While I prefer the size of the 14" I don't need a portable laptop since I rarely travel. So hopefully my 15" one which is suppose to come later today has a decent enough display.

T410/T420 have great form factor and its really quite small for a 14inch notebook especially the T410s/T420s series. But the display IS ABSOLUTELY GARBAGE Like what is mentioned a few posts above. So I recommend you stay far far away from those.

I am so close to just getting the 15" MBP with anti-glare and a Henge doc, but the IT engineers here will rib me mercilessly if I do.

Your 15" review will sway me since you already have the 15" MBP to comment on display comparisons.

haha I really hope I can get it today. I was so disappointed the laptop didn't come yesterday. I have everything I ordered but the laptop. I'm out here in San Diego, CA its 11am and no FedEx or UPS delivery truck yet. SIGH...

If you have the option to get a MBP I'd strongly recommend getting that. I love mine!! I just hope the display is 80% of the mac screen and I'll be happy. The contrast on the 8540p/w review on notebook checks actually rated higher than the MBP. But one thing the MBP 15 has the elitebook beat is weight and size. It's a lot thinner!! and weighs about the same as the elitebook 14". Who cares if the IT rip you mercilessly over it? :)

I'd order the 8560p if it had 80% of a MBP screen and I get a 4-core Sandy Bridge, efficient dock, 3-year onsite and avoid learning a new OS (MacOS) proficiently at 70% of the cost of the MBP with upgraded warranty.

But since I sell IT infrastructure services, I'd be culturally rebellious getting a MBP and probably get voted off the island survivor style.

But based on your screen comparison reports, I'd have to consider waiting for the new 8560w since it offers a one better screen option compared to the 8560p without going to the DreamColor IF it is worth the extra 0.5 lb and $300 and huge power brick compared to MBP.

    8560p & 8560w - HD+ (1600 x 900)
    8560w - FHD (1920 x 1080)

I have decided, I will go with:
    - i5 2520
    - 4gb of memory
    - 14 inch hd+ 1600x900 resolution
    - 500gb 7200rpm harddrive
    - amd 6470 graphics
    - 6 cell battery
    - win7 pro
    - 3 year warranty
    -....

It is one of the pre-configured models available here in Europe (Slovenia)

Hopefully I will have it on wednesday or thursday.

Finally, I got it today. I only had time to set up basic stuff...
First impression: IT IS GREAT!! At least for me... (and believe me, I had all kind of laptops: from Acer to Macbook pro...)
I will write more detailed short review tommorow, but I can comment the screen. It is quite good. I have also 8440p model in hand, and the 8460p screen is better. Both with the same resolution. 8440p is running on Nvidia graphics.

not really, I am happy with the screen. It is very decent. I think it is very important which panel you get...
I hope I will have enough time today at night, to write short review.
I will compare it with previous elitebook model: 8440p

can you look up the screen hardware ID ?? the previous 8440p 1600 x 900 screen was horrible with a contrast of roughly only 150:1

I mean to write this in my short review, but I can mention it now :)
My 8440p has lcd panel AUO123E (AU Optronics) - which was the best one for that model.
With 8460p, luckily I got also AU Optronics, this time AUO223E
    Improvements are visible...

Humm... I've been using the 15" MBP for a week now. Great screen, but the weight on my lap will be no different than the 8460p (w/o DVD).

Secondly, I miss having a dock + larger screen too much and I coming back to Windows.

Shaq32's screen reports are encouraging. I think I will order a CTO unit that can be returned for my own eyeballs. I have also ordered a returnable X220 to see if I can live with Ultraportable.

    Shaq32 - No fan issues?
