is it possible to upgrade this notebook in the future?
is this a good configuration? -
Got mine the other day. It has the 1600x900 display and, yes, it is not up to "Elite" standards. I also have a 8540p with the 15.6 display and it is far superior. As some have already said it is on the dim side. With the ambient light sensor enabled its too dim to use under most conditions. With the sensor off its marginal, contrast is poor and it does have a narrow vertical range. Text quality is marginal as well. Its not the worst display I've had but nowhere near the best. The rest of the laptop is perfect IMO. Not sure what the heck HP was thinking putting this display on an "EliteBook".

Question: I keep hearing how the 8460w/p has a really bad screen, but I'm really wondering what it's being compared to? I've been looking around for laptops for the past few months, and every laptop I've considered has had "poor" screens both according to reviewers and in my own opinion at local retail stores. The only one with a decent screen lately was the Vaio Z, and I really can't persuade myself to get one considering the huge price and the proprietary parts. I wasn't even impressed with the IPS on the x220. The really sad part is that the some of the 5+ year old laptops that my workplace is recycling have better screens than I've ever seen these days.
So, I guess my question is: compared to the sub-15" offerings on the market right now (that is the Sandy Bridge generation), how does the 8640w/p screen rank? And are there any recommendable alternatives? -

I'm slightly intrigued, but I have no idea how to shop for a screen upgrade. The post linked to provided only factory screens, and I believe the base was only 1366x768. Also, I know on other laptops, changing out the screen can be a pain - in fact, that's partially why I'm in need of a new laptop, considering that my old Vaio SR didn't survive attempted screen surgery (though it had an admittedly poor cabling design)
Any more concrete ideas than just a concept?
And since you can get 24% off CTO 8460w and perhaps better through sales rep, it doesn't seem to be near as overpriced as one might think ATM. However, this doesn't solve the fact that notebooks with nice screens seem to be few and far between.

I bought a 8460p, equipped with a 128SSD and an optical drive. I'll receive the machine tomorrow.
I did a bit of Googling but could not find what I need in order to change the optical drive to 2nd HD (Intel 320 SSD). Do I need some adapter or just remove the DVD drive and plug the SSD in? -
8460p is an office machine, standart 1366x768 display is absolutely ok for text work.
I've found a little problem. My backspace button doesn't work if I press it on upper left part, though it clicks. Is it covered by a warranty? -
Spent another day with my new 8460p and it is a nice laptop. The weight might seem a little heavy to some but I appreciate the solid construction more than any weight concerns. The screen still disappoints me some, but as someone said earlier "it's not a show stopper". I do find the CD tray a bit challenging to get open as the button release is angled in a way that its tough to squeeze a finger in there. The track pad is fantastic.

hello, where can find upgrade bay for change dvd to hdd?
have hp 8460p -
Do you guys have the same experience? Can you please comment on this?
Does the elitebook ships with different panels as well? -
-
what is the smallest charger cable for the 8460p laptop on the market?
please post me link
and what upgrade bay is compatible with this? -
I received my 8460p, and I am returning it.
Here is the reason: Its screen has some weird texture that actually makes me dizzy and very uncomfortable looking at the screen. IT HURTS MY EYES!!!.
I am not talking about color, contrast, brightness, or screen-door effect.
Its display coating just have a really weird shiny texture in it, and it makes everything look as if I am looking into some magic eye picture (it essentially makes everything looks 3D). It makes me really dizzy and very, very uncomfortable staring at the screen (it is the worst when I look at white screen, and internet surfing and programming environment usually consists of a lot of white background...)
I tried to tweak settings (gamma, brightness, etc), but I realized those dizzy effects were just inherent in display coatings.
I am not someone who really craves good displays, so I don't care about display qualities as long as they just look ok.
But if my eyes actually get hurt, and I feel uncomfortable staring at the screen, it is game over regardless of how good other stuff is.
My display panel was CMO1468, which is from Chi Mei, so maybe I got a bad display panel, but who knows. -

Hi,
can someone please post his energy consumption under Win 7 with 2720QM and ATI GPU (no optical drive, Sandforce SSD)
I'm using Ubuntu und I think it is too high, about 20Watt in idle. I guess that any energy saving mechanism is not working -
There is a new bios update available on official hp website for hp8460p HP EliteBook 8460p Notebook PC- HP Notebook System BIOS Update - HP Business Support Center . ENHANCEMENTS: - Provides support for PeakShift. Has anyone tried it already? Does it resolve constantly running fan issue?
-
No, it does not
-
Need help.
Power Assistant in tray shows that battery wasn't found. Battery works fine and passes hp check. But my attempt to get info about power consumption in PA fails, because "the system needs to be calibrated". What does "system" mean? I calibrated battery with windows power plan "Calibrator" - nothing has changed.
I also have "An error occurred while using HP CASL. Please restart HP Power Assistant application." and "An error occured in HP Power Assistant application, module [HPPA_Service].Please restart HP Power Assistant application." in windows event log when windows starts. What is it? -
I'm not sure about the origin of your problem, but I don't think it's related to the battery not being calibrated. I never figured out how to calibrate the battery on my 8460p, but the Power Assistant is not showing any problem of this kind.
Does anybody know how to calibrate the battery and whether it's useful? -
Just restored to the point before RAMdisk was installed, everything is fine now.
To calibrate the battery use windows 7 standart feature: full charge - unplug - create power plan "Calibrate" with "Never" option on the left column for battery - wait for complete discharge while normal use of the laptop.
Procedure is discribed in "Help and Support". -

There's a new bios out (again) from the 28th of July. The only change seems to be:
"- Provides support for a new panel"
Anyone know what this is? Are there new display panels on the way, perhaps better 1600x900 panels or maybe 1920x1080 resolution!!!??? -
I just got mine today. I'm wondering whether anyone has encountered keyboard flex when strongly press the spacebar button? I also see a slight upward curve on the metal sheet below spacebar (the thin metal sheet between spacebar and the two clicking buttons). Not sure whether this is normal or not. Apart from these two issues, very happy with the machine.

Hi,
these are my specs: 2720QM, 4gig Ram, no optical drive, SSD, AMD 6470m
I`ve got 7h runtime displayed when using Win7 with full energy saving (min brightness, no WLAN, Desktop idle). I didn`t test it but I think this amount is quite realistic. However, doing the same under Ubuntu 11.04 I get about 3-4h. I think it`s due to the ATI Graphics Card. Has anyone tried Ubuntu with HD3000?
Thanks in advance!
BurtaN -
So no one has experienced the curve and flex I mentioned? Does this only happen to my machine??
-
-
-
VIDEO: Elitebook_8460p_keyboard_flex.mp4 - YouTube
Picture: Slight curvature on the metal sheet between spacebar and buttons on touchpad
Please can anyone confirm such curve and flex? Also, the right side of my spacebar seems to place higher than the left side. I know that all the buttons are designed to be curve; however, this seems a bit odd to me. Thanks very much. -
Now I can see it, it is the same on my one
-
Thanks Burtan. So you have both the flex and also the curve?
-
So, I'm looking for some thoughts on my predicament:
Originally I was looking for a 13.3" laptop, but it turns out that there are none with a decent screen and good hardware to be found with the exception of the ridiculously priced Vaio Z.
I have in my inbox a quote from HP which I got a few weeks ago:
8460p w/2720QM, 900p screen, and Centrino Ultimate Upgrades, with 4 year onsite support (ADH) for a grand total of $1,774.45 (that's with estimated tax and shipping)! Looking around, this seems to be a pretty good deal considering everything that's in it, especially in comparison to the ridiculous pricing on the Dell competing model.
The downsides I see (that have me hesitant to purchase):
1) Won't ship for a long time... I mean, well into next month it looks like, and school starts on Thursday. I don't really want to be without a laptop for that long, though I suppose I could (possibly) convince my boss to let me use one of the loaner MBPs we have around (very old models, but still functional).
2) Heavy as heck... especially for a student...
3) Miserable screen - with that said, from a technical standpoint (at least according to NotebookCheck) it's the best of the models I'm looking at (sad day!).
4) ATi graphics - I promised myself after my Vaio SR that I was through with ATi (AMD), and I'm very sad that they don't offer nVidia options.
5) Throttling... of course I could use a ViDock for graphics, but that does seem to kick the price up some more. Seems like it defeats the purpose of the AMD card anyways.
6) Trackpoint... I hate trackpoints, though I can always take the nub off and it will probably not bother me too much. At least w/the HP workstations they now have island style keys which minimizes my major complaint (that the nub gets in the way of touch typing).
Pros:
1) Built like a tank with an amazing warranty to back it up... my last notebook had a great deal of suffering thanks to the weak case and fragile screen. Also, Sony's warranties suck.
2) 900p screen (drools)
3) Lots of ports makes me happy (especially DisplayPort and FW800). ODD is a bonus!
4) Not a PITA to take apart unlike every other computer I've dealt with recently.
Thoughts? -

I have also a flexing keyboard, but not at the spacebar.
Mine is located at the right side of the keyboard, if I press esc and the keys under it.
It´s time to call support for keyboard replacement?
I´ve another "bug" at my display led, if I change the display angle it started flashing without pushing the button next to it....
Those material discrepanies are really annoying, I think...
greetz,
mallok -
Note that, under normal typing, I see no flex on mine...the keyboard flexes only when I start to put some pressure on the spacebar button. What annoys me more is actually the curve I see on the metal sheet between spacebar and the upper track pad buttons...
Besides these, the machine works great for me. -
I have had my 8460p since wednesday and it's coming to the crush point on if i'm going to keep it or not.
First the Screen, it's usless I got the HD+ 900p screen and altho it's plenty bright enough, the colors are screwed, grays look like blues and the blacks are too light, on battery mode it continue to change brighten even with the ambient sensor turned off. Screen Res is good.
The sound is hollow and lacks any bass notes. It's also generated out of one speaker box that is on the left hand of the corner so the sound is very unbalanced. Playing around with the SRS Sound Program you can get it to sound a bit richer but anything over 50% volume and the sound begins to distort.
The Fan, it's always on even when the cpu goes all the way down to room temp, the fan continues to blow. Which leads me onto the Graphic thottling.... Imagine, if you will, you playing a game at 40fps the laptop gets hot and turns it fan on and then Bang, 9fps all the way and thats it. The laptop cools but it never seems to Un-thottle the GPU again until you shut it down completely and reboot it.
The Good Points.
Good Battery Life, about 4hr 30 minutes.
The Trackpad is A+++
It's built like a tank but doesn't weigh like one, No Flex in it what so ever, including the keyboard. Keyboard is really nice and unlike the previous hp elitebook the LEDs are small and don't distract from exactly using the laptop.
At the end of the day, I knew on day two the 8460p wouldn't last as instead of reaching for the sliver 8460p when i wanted to browse the website, i instead boots up the old hp 6510b. -
Same problem for me here, the fan is always on and it's quite disturbing. The cpu temp is not even hot (40C°) but the fan is running... I already activated the bios option "Fan not always on".
Anyone with a solution for lowering the noise?
The pc is brand new - i7 - SSD intel - 8Go - HD+ -
I tried TPFanControl as I read it has been successful for some users with a 8560w model.
It does not work with my 8460p, it can only increase the speed of the fan, not reduce it.
I might return it since I can't work with this level of noise. Too bad, I really liked the 8460p, design, solidity and performance. -

Question:
Anyone ever had problem with firefox going to "not responsing" for about 30 seconds - then coming back again? Have this right now fairly often....didn't had it on 8440p.. -
might be a freeze of the Vertex.
Try disabling LPM -
Hmmm seems almost like a Bug in Firefox 6...updated to ff beta 7, didnt had the problem anymore - but I can't tell for sure, since i only updated a day ago.
Future will tell. -
An updated BIOS release is now available for 8460p notebooks.
Version: F.08
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54501-55000/sp54540.exe
You can alternatively find the download as well as additional information about the BIOS release here - http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...601489-updated-hp-business-bios-releases.html -
I guess it's not a 8460p driver issue, more like a Firefox/flash/windows bug, but who knows. -
-
Has anyone noticed strange behavior of brightness setting? Sometimes (usually after waking from hibernation/stand by) setting the brightness is not possible at all. I tried it with ambient sensor disabled and enabled in BIOS and in Windows, but there's no difference.
Also when I'm looking at the screen and changing brightness, it seems there are fewer brightness levels of the screen than levels of OSD bar.
