    Dear BearLab,
can you please comment the fan noise with the quad core.
    Is your fan on constantly?

I had a 8460p myself withe I5 2540... the fan was not constantly on. Thanks to the removeable bottom I could find out, because the harddrive made almost more noise than the fan in low rep.

My mom received my machine today, so I'll have it in 3-4 days :D

    Core i7, Ati Card, 1600x900, 500gb 7200rpm hdd

I wonder - is the optical drive removable and can it be changed for a HDD-holder like with Thinkpad's Ultrabay adapters? In the long run I want to get rid of my optical drive and have a SSD as system-drive and the 500gb as data-grave.

    Any input?

    Cheers
    Amq

This is exactly what I am about to push the button on. You can configure it via HP's site... i'm going to put a SSD in the main system, and then 500 gb in the optical bay expansion slot. I've never done this before - any ideas how much extra weight it will add? Additionally, has anyone dual booted linux with two harddrives like this? thoughts? I'm in bioinformatics and so I really need space for huge files, and linux is more compatible with many programs than windows (but I don't want a mac.) ???

The laptop is already available in Belgium (I've received it one week ago). I would be surprised if it was not also available in France.

    Hi everyone!

It's been a little less than one week since I received my HP8460p, so it's time for some feedback. My config: Core i7 2620M, ATI, 1600x900, 8Gb RAM, win7 pro 64 bits. The original HDD has been replaced by an SSD (Kingston 256 GB SSDNow V+100).

Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The build quality is exceptionnal, the best I've ever seen for any laptop so far (including Macbook pro). The performances are also very high, it goes without saying. The fan is on most (if not all) of the time on AC, but I have to put my ear close to the exhaust to hear it. It only becomes clearly audible under sustained load. By the way, putting the exhaust on the right side of the laptop was maybe not HP's best design choice, even though until now my hand has not roasted. ;-) The keyboard is really awesome (it would have been perfect if the up/down arrows had been properly separated rather than share a key slot), and the touchpad is very good as well.

On the down side, the screen is not the best I've seen, as many other reported. However, I have also seen worse, and I would not say that it is really a showstopper. I have disabled the ambient light sensor and noted a slight improvement, but it seems that the brightness of the screen still flickers on some occasions (I've noted it some times when opening/closing windows). Did anyone notice this kind of behaviour? Did you do something more than just fn+F11 to disable the sensor?

The machine is certainly not the lightest of its category, but it's still ok to work for a couple of hours with it on my lap. Thanks to the efficient heat dissipation, the laptop remains cool even under load, which significantly improves the "lap-top" experience.

Does anyone know whether the 65W power supply works with my config (Core i7 + ATI)? I currently have the 90W version, which I would ideally leave in my office and replace with the 65W version to reduce travelling weight.

That's it for now. Tell me if you need any other info, and thanks for your feedback on my questions.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I have the 6-cell battery, which provides me about 5h of autonomy under light use with screen brightness set to max.

Check in Catalyst control center, under PowerPlay option; disable option called: enable vari-bright

    It should be ok then.

@shaq32: thanks for the vari-light tip. Hopefully my screen will not flicker any more now.

Another small "bug" on my laptop: the DVD tray pops up unexpectedly from time to time. I have found a thread about this problem, but I haven't tried to implement the solution yet because the tray has not popped up for 2 days now. Furthermore, I'm not sure that the "bend and flex" issue mentionned in that thread could really be at the origin of the problem on a laptop as sturdy as the 8460p.

pepsoli can you give a link which ssd exactly you instaled instead HDD? Is it sata II or III. I like to know that beacaus Im going to do the some think like you did.
    another think is:
I'm wondering about the empty PCIe Mini slot in laptop. Does it have empty PCIe Mini slot? I was hoping to purchase and install one of these as a rapid drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...39&cm_re=mini_pcie_ssd-_-20-167-039-_-Product

Please stay away from the Corsair SSDs and every SSD using the SandForce chipset. Random reboots, BSOD when returning from sleep, SSD not detected on cold boot and various other random problems hit me when upgrading the HD in my EliteBook 8460p to a Corsair Force F120 SSD. I have now switched to an Intel 320 SSD and it's working perfectly.

My SSD is from the following series: Kingston Technology Company - Solid State Drives - SSDNow V+100. I took the 256Gb version. I think it's SATA II, but I'm not completely sure (I did not install it myself).

Concerning the PCIe Mini slot, I'm not familiar enough with PCI standards to give you a precise answer, but there is definitely an empty slot on the left side of the computer (it's about 5.5cm in width).

FYI: I also tried ubuntu 10.10 on my 8460p, running from a usb stick, and it seems to be working ok, although I did not manage to install the proper graphics driver so far (maybe it's due to it running from the usb key, or maybe I haven't tried hard enough yet). I have not tested it much under ubuntu so far, but I'll let you know if I find real problems.

    Enabling Virtulization Technologies?

    Hi,
I've just gotten a 8640p (i7/SSD) but cannot for the life of me get VT enabled in the BIOS.
I press ESC/F10 to enter the BIOS
Choose not to login as Guest
Select Windows User corresponding to a local admin
    Enter password
Almost all options are greyed out- including the VT options.

    What should I do?
    Sincerely
    Mikkel

    Steps below
    1.Login as guest
    2.Set up password
    3.reboot
4.Login again as guest with your password
5.You can change whatever you want & you can also set other users permissions (for BIOS) to change things.

I talked with a sales representative yesterday about the bad screen reviews on 8460p, and he told me that HP was looking into it.

I checked my old laptop's color space, and it seems to be a bit bigger than the 8460p.
I don't want to buy a new laptop that has a even worse display than the one i have now.

I wondered if anyone that has calibrated their screen, preferably the 1600x900, could upload it to iccview.de to check the color space?
To see the 3D you need to install Cortona3D viewer: Cortona3D viewer is a fast, interactive web 3D viewer for VRML files
But what I'm most interested in is how many "cubic colorspace units" it has.
My HP nx8220-screen has around 568k units while sRGB has around 834k units.

EDIT: Found a review with .icc profile. Uploaded it to iccview.de and it turns out it has 515k color space units. Thats a bit lower than my old computer and far away from sRGB.
Lenovo T420 has the exact same color space, so they are probably using identical panels.

Is there any chance that HP is going to offer a better screen? Or do we have to wait for the next generation?

    Hello,

    I have a 8460P LG745EA#ABD and the Advanced Docking-Station 120W (Europe).

Somebody has this Problem: The microphone input at the Docking-Station doesn't work. But the speakers output at the Docking-Station and the speakers output and microphone input at the 8460p works fine.

I updatet the BIOS to F.03 and updated all drivers but the Problem remains.

    Can anyone help?

No. The WWAN/wifi slots do not have the SATA lines connected to support mPCIe SSD. Look at the Lenovo T420/T420s or Dell Precision M4600 for that facility.

Is wimax pci-e + USB or pci-e only?

If it's pci-e only AND your bios doesn't halt with an error-104 unsupported wifi/wwan device, then can use eGPU Setup 1.x's anti-whitelisting feature to get the wimax working. You'll need to cellophane tape pin 20 to get the radio on as well.

It's pci-e for wifi and usb for wimax. So, above mantioned solution is not available. But thanks, anyway. Or does that fit? Does 8460p have pci-e+usb pins at all?

Did anyone try a new SATA III OZC SSD with 8460p? Nominal 500/550 GB/s is really achievable?

The one and two gen older Elitebooks have WWAN (usb) and wifi (pci-e) slots. Not sure if the newer ones have pcie+usb in the single slot.

Only remaining workaround would be to wire an unwhitelisted USB port from say the docking connector to the wifi mPCIe slot's pin 36 + 38. This technique was used on a 2510P to wire in a webcam here.

    just a quick notice:
Guide OCZ Official Statement regarding hardware issues reported by other manufacturers ...UPDATE 06/11/2011

Right now I´d stay clear of either Corsair or OCZ SSDs based on SF2xxx.
I´m waiting for the release of another manufacturer´s SF2281, but still have my spare Crucial C300 lying around, just in case.

As to the numbers... ATTO is not really helpful for real-life performance, only for high results.

    Hi.

I live in Norway where we can't build custom HP machines. And there aren't any preconfigured machines with the 1600x900 display and the intel onchip graphics adapter, which is what I'd like (battery, weight, temp, etc)
Does anyone know if it's possible to remove the Radeon HD6470 graphics card and use the onchip graphics solution?

    +1. 8460P doesn't have a switchable graphics setup. You'd need a 14" Lenovo T420/T420/E420, Dell E6420/Vostro 3450 or Sony CA for switchable gfx.

    Hi,
Sorry if this is redundant--I've been reading the threads for this and the 8560p but can't figure out what the end conclusion was. Is there actually a difference in the 1600x900 HD+ screens for the 8460p and the 8560p's?
People keep saying the 8460p screen is terrible, but I can't figure out if they're talking about the 1600x900, and if so, if the one on the 8560p is actually better.

I'm a programmer, so I'm interested in text quality--I don't want to go blind after staring at a screen for hours.

    Thanks--I really appreciate it!!

I am considering either purchasing this HP 8460 laptop or the Dell e6420.
For those who have used both or are familiar with both, do you recommend one over the other. If so, why.

    Thanks

The standard screen is not good, the 1600x900 is a little better, but the 1600x900 screen on the 8560p is much better.

Besides the size and weight are there any other big differences between the 8560p and the 8460p?

    Just to introduce my self. I'm a proud owner of new 8460p (i7 2620M 2.70GHz, 8GB RAM, 320GB SATA, AMD Radeon HD6470M 1GB, LED HD+ 1600x900).

Great machine, classy build, robust and elegant, the screen is great as well for me (no flickering). The only point that could be better is that button/ hatch used for closing the lid - it should be more robust like on my old Elitebook 8530w. On 8460p it's a bit loose, but that's pettiness. A great machine.

    Beside 8460p I also have an Elitebook 8530w (CoreDuo 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 15,4" WSXGA+ 1680x1050, ATI Mobility Fire GL 256MB) and Probook 5320m (i3 350 2.26GHz, 4GB RAM, 320GB SATA, 13,3" 1366x768).

Hi everone, my new 8460p just arrived and the battery test is already underway.

However, does anyone know what's the actual difference (in battery life) between the 62 Whr and 55 Whr battery? 55 Whr one is labeled long life, while the number suggests otherwise.

edit: OK, I found some info that "long life" refers to warranty - 3 years for 55 Whr and 1 year for 62 Whr.

go to device manager =>properties of gobi 3000 => details => hardware ids. You may copy first line here. PID = DEV, VID =VEN. 4 numbers after each. Would be greatful. =)

I would also be interested in knowing this if anyone has both units to compare.

    Thanks!
