what is the interface HP uses for the graphics card?
is it possibly mxm 2 or 3 but with bios white listing like the wifi cards?
think i could put an ATI m5800 in an 8530w, if i were to find it?
EDIT; its definitely mxm, 2 or 3, and most cards are definitely blocked by the bios. nevertheless, i want to buy a gtx 280 and make it happen. somehow....

I just bought a used 8530p with a 2.4 ghz processor and would like to change the Lightscribe drive to a BluRay burner.
Am I stuck with the HP burner or can I get something like a Panasonic brand, as long as it's 12.7mm tray drive?
Thanks -
Brand new 8530w, running Windows7 Enterprise 64-bit - my only issue with the machine so far is that it *constantly* overheats.
The system never shuts down, but it does grind to a halt while it waits for the temp to go down.
Here is a picture of me Googling for information about 8530w heat issues with HWMonitor overlayed - you can see the extreme temperatures from doing nearly nothing.
http://www.jkmathes.org/Elitebook8530w_Overheating.png
Is there a fix for this? A BIOS update that I need maybe? Very frustrating. -EDIT- I'm running the newest BIOS already, apparently. argh -
What do you mean overheating? These idle temperatures are the same as mine have been for a year. Likely you can lower them by around 10C with undervolting. Technically the GPU overheats at 105C. My GPU under full stress is always 88C (If the CPU stress is also 100%).

Hello,
Got an Elitebook 8530p with an LCD display w/ CCFL backlight (1920x1200).
Any way I can "upgrade" to a LED backlight version ?
I called HP tech support, and they tell me that specific models come with specific LCD screens, and no LED backlit replacement is available?
Is this the final answer? ( I thought 8530p was offered with LED backlit LCD at some point). -
assuming it's the same deal as the 6930p...
only the lower resolution was offered in the LED backlit "illumi-lite" screen and the higher resolution was only offered in CCFL. -
I tried googling parts suppliers too, but only replacement screens offered for 8530p are CCFL. -
I have the same dimming issue with my 8530p, and like your machine, if I press below the bottom of the screen, it gets bright again. What (if anything) did you have to do to fix yours?

Hi all, I'm now an owner of a 8530w, just waiting for it to arrive in a week from UPS, bought it off ebay.
The seller that has many of these, I think he was a little bitter. When I was e-mailing him, he said I must be a smart guy because I should of paid $200 more, and thinks he should start selling crap because buyers can't seem to tell what's good. I will agree, I was surprised the auction ended a bit low considering, especially with the extra he included, plus a near new warranty. It ended at $770. My max bid was $200 more, I didn't tell him that
I bought this for my animation school using Maya, so it's going to be put to good use for the next year or more. Only simple models, no rendering, just playblasts (openGL preview renders). I only hope it has decent performance for openGL timeline playback locked at 24fps, no slow down or glitches when moving objects in the viewports, etc.
Never thought I'd buy a used laptop, but this should fit my needs better than any new system in this price range. Plus has a better and longer warranty than standard laptops, better built, and was important to be certified with Maya.
Warranty:
- HP HW Maintenance Onsite Support, Ending date 20 Dec 2012 (About 2 1/2 years left)
Specs:
- WUXGA 1920*1200 (Top spec on my list for Maya, hope it isn't too small on a 15.4")
- CPU T9550 2.66ghz
- 4GB ram
- 160GB 7200rpm
- Quadro FX 770m 512mb (2nd most important item for Maya)
- Windows Vista Buisness + XP Pro (both 64 bit)
Bonuses:
- New docking station
- 2 new power cords (description later says the 2 chargers work with dock and laptop)
- Carry bag
- Extended life battery in addition to standard battery
I'll have to go through this thread to see if there are any updates I should be aware of, or if the system runs too hot with a noisy fan, I'll look into that voltage trick I've seen around here. -
Hi guys, I have managed to decode enhanced sensor info for HP 8740w and so add monitoring of various CPU and FAN values to HWiNFO32.
I can try the same for your model too, let me know if anyone is willing to help with that (send me some dumps + make testes). -
-
Okay, so what I need is:
1. Run HWiNFO32 in Debug Mode, open Sensors for a while, then save a Report File, close HWiNFO32 and send me the Report File saved + HWiNFO32.DBG file
2. Download the RW-Tool from: RW - Read & Write
Run the tool, Open the ACPI section, locate the DSDT tab there and send me the content.
Btw, currently I'm trying to implement a more universal method to support certain sensors (used on HP models too), but it's yet unclear which ones have these sensors..
-
I condensed the files with 7zip. -
Thanks for the data.
Please try the following build:
www.hwinfo.com/beta/hw32_359_930.zip
and let me know how it worked (Report + Debug file)
-
-
Thanks for the feedback, glad to hear that it works.
It's called Fan1 because some models can monitor more than 1 fan. You can easily rename that label.
I could add one more reading for this model if interested - Battery Temperature

A page back I mentioned I bought an 8530w, WUXGA with FX 770m, T9550 CPU.
Just got it, came with Windows 7 Pro installed, but not sure if all the drivers have been installed to have it running in tip top shape.
Such as there was no nVidia control panel, fn Brightness controls don't work, but the light sensitive fn key does, though it instantly dims the screen too much. Volume touch buttons work, but the bar between the controls doesn't light up.
Anyway, I haven't messed with it much. Should I just install the latest drivers from HP's website? Are there any newer drivers I should avoid because of bugs, user older drivers, etc? -
I just last month installed all the latest drivers for my 8530p / T9400 2.53G / Radeon HD 3650 / XP32. I'm just about to try installing W7x64 so I'll let you know how I get on.
The soft-touch-buttons still feel much less responsive than they were when I first got the device (the newer snazzy graphics on the volume control take far too long to appear on screen when a little LCD-effect head-up-display graphic would do the trick just as well) but other than that I've had no problems at all. (My machine is nearly 2 years old btw.)
Incidentally I dropped it off the table pretty hard onto its open edges the other day. There's a nice little 3mm dent in the lid on the top right corner of the screen where it impacted and I shat a brick when it restarted and gave a boot failure... thankfully I switched off an on again and it worked fine. So it appears to have hard disk parking....? -
Hello everybody,
I bought one 8530p and I'm very happy with it, it's a great computer.
I'd like to install a second hard-drive (SSD of 120gb and normal harddrive for storage). Does anybody installed a second harddrive? Would be better change the hd and buy an external one for storage? I saw some caddies at ebay for $50 for the second harddrive.
Any recommendation will be welcome. Thanks! -
You have an E-SATA port... use that and you'll get full speed hard drive access from your external SATA drive(s).
Windows will happily install to and boot from any SATA or E-SATA drive, so you don't *need* to replace the internal drive, you'd be better off using a RAID stripe in an external caddy with two or three drives if you want to maximise performance.
USB2 is a lot slower for external drives - not advisable to use it for your system disk, but for file storage it's fine and a little bit cheaper and much more portable as E-SATA isn't as popular as USB.
I bought a 500GB 2.5" drive and E-SATA Icy Box caddy for about £70 ($110) last month. It also works with USB2, so I get the portability anyway. -
newmodeus.com has a secondary drive bay caddy for pretty cheap, and it'll even fit 12.5mm drives:
Add 1TB HDD or SSD - HP Upgrade Bay (compare AU097AA, AK868AA ) [HP12-2BAY-8730] - $44.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
The only bummer with that drive enclosure is that the tolerances are a bit sloppy -- it's like 1mm too narrow and 1mm too long, so it wobbles in the slot, and the screws for the metal bracket (on the back of the enclosure) seem misaligned a bit, so I had to bend and file the metal bracket to fit. I'm quite certain it's the screw holes, since even the HP bracket didn't work on the newmodeus enclosure.
I also got a couple of cables from Newegg: slim sata data+power, and esata male to sata female. I then hacked up a molex connector and USB connector to pull 5V power from USB, to power the CD drive externally. The only bummer is that you can't boot from the eSATA port in AHCI mode -- you have to be in IDE or RAID mode, or swap the drive back to internal.
Edit: also note that changing from RAID to AHCI in Windows will require a bit of registry editing, or you'll get STOP 0x7B. -
I'm sure this is old news, but... I just bought one of those massive HP 12 cell batteries and just achieved 7.5hours on my 8530p (2.5Ghz, 4GB ram, intel 80GB SSD, ATI 3650) and there's I think about 30min to 45min left in her.
screen = 100%, wireless active, regular ish tasks, video over lay zoom (high CPU load for short times, but lots of them), I booted into Linux for about an hour(which kills batteries), and used "HP optimized" power plan on Windows 7.
so I'm REALLY happy now. no more cords! I don't have to worry unless I start to go over the 8hour mark!!
I'll bet I can get 8+ easily if it take it a little easier on the PC.
I don't think I could buy anything but an Elitebook considering my experience with it so far! -
Hi, does anybod here have a blueray player in there system? i have sold mine but the but the buyer is complaining about watching 1080p bluray and gaming crashing. but when i had the notebook i never incurred non of the problems. i explained to him that crashing can be normal depending on there drivers and settings which may need to be dropped a tad. but im unsure why the blueray player would crash.
Is there anyone out there that can advise. I know this is not a hardware fault because i was using it alot.
It is under warranty but still this is only driver related although he did say he used the hp diagnostic test from the bios section and claimed that it kept crashing on the video section. -

Wifi capabilities.... I only seem able to connect at 54Mbps.... I'm sure I read somewhere that the built-in wifi adapter does b/g/n and I'm more sure that I installed the n driver recently.
The specs PDF shows it should work with 802.11n (draft)
Do I need to change a setting somewhere to enable n wifi? -
hallo everyone,
I know it's not the correct way to interrupt and i'll hope you all will forgive me for this.
i'm Carlo and i am from the netherlands. i have a question regarding the wlan adapter for the 8530P.
which adapters are suitable for this one. I was searching the net for it but couldn't find a correct answer.
is the intel wifi link 5300 a correct one? hope you can answer this one for me and forgive my bad english -
Intel® Driver Update Utility for Intel® wireless adapters - Check for the latest driver
That should sort it for you. I had an older driver installed but the new one seems to be working. -
thanks for the response but i'm not looking for a driver.
my 8530P doesnt have a wireless adapter inserted.
so i'd like to buy one but not all adapters are suitable. different protocols enzv.
i've tried one ( this was a adapter from a hp 6300 series) but it didn't work..
so.......... the reason for my previous post.
shortcut.... which brand and type is the build in wifi adapter in your notebook 8530 ? -
The 8530 P/W come with
Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100 802.11a/b/g/n 1x2 WLAN module with iAMT 4.0 support or
Intel Wi-Fi Link 5300 802.11a/b/g/n 3x3 WLAN module with iAMT 4.0 support
according to the maintenance manual.
I have a 8530w with a 5300 AGN. -
i just got send a specsheet where it say's the intel 5300.
thanks everyone !!!!! -
Mine is a 5300 in an 8530p.
If you need to transfer a lot of data then you might see the benefit of a faster or specific device. But those cheap little black thumbnail sized USB 'n' adapters on eBay are pretty good, they normally use generic chipsets, so drivers and compatibility are no issue. And much cheaper than an internal device, but not quite as neat. -
Fixes:
- Provides the latest Intel Microcode to fix a rare issue that may occur on notebooks that are running a 64-bit operating system, where an incorrect machine instruction may cause a "blue screen" event to occur.
Enhancements:
- Adds an option to the F10 Setup Utility that lets users enable or disable the eSATA port. - Updates the preboot execution environment (PXE) ROM to version 1.3.52.2. - Updates the video BIOS (VBIOS).
Flashed it and it works.
If you have a HDD connected via the eSATA port with an enclosure that supports USB and eSATA, it will work now as a USB connected HDD if you disable the eSATA port.
This drops the performance dramatically. I don't know what this disable possibility is good for. -
Maximinimaus, thanks for the bios update notice. I notice my MS office applications open up faster now, pdf's too. video bios update? not sure why but nice to have.
BTW, disabling eSATA is for security reasons for some people/businesses. Whats the point of banning, for security, USB drives and disabling USB ports if eSATA is still enabled. Though I think this was in the previous version too. -
If you're interested in "Dual IDA" with "Throttle Stop" look at the corresponding thread in the "Windows OS and Software" subforum at NBR. I submitted there a patched HP 8530w BIOS F.13 to enable this. -
Hi,
I'm considering using my 8530p as a lightweight server of sorts. I'm planning to install Debian unstable on it.
Problem is, I will be sleeping next to the machine, so it has to be VERY quiet.
So, I'm wondering if it's possible to directly control the 8530p's fan speed in Linux somehow? I just want it to turn as slowly as possible (or even not at all). I really don't care about performance, so I'm not against underclocking it.
Any ideas? -
Anyone upgraded a HP 8530P from XP Pro to Win 7 (mine is Pro)? Bought a 750gb hd, had Win 7 Pro installed. PC runs fine, however when I tried to move files over from my external HD, the external would stop after just a minute or two. Then I would require a Check Disk every time I restarted.
Tried a couple of different caddies and esata and USB 2, same issue.
Google the problem and found a bunch of people with the same issue.
Hotfix posted for Nvidia/x64 USB transfer issues
So looks like Microsoft has a hotfix if you hanve Nvidia USB controllers, but my 8530P has Intel. Anyone had this problem and found a fix? Would like to use my larger HD with Win 7 and be able to use the 8gb Ram capability. Thanks for any help. -
The ambient light sensor on my HP Elitebook 8530p (FU617#ABD) is not working correctly.
Sometimes I need to press my thumb on the sensor (to darken it) for a couple of times, sometimes it adjusts on its own, sometimes I need to darken it only once.
Disabling in the BIOS doesn´t really seem to affect the light sensor, either.
I should still have warranty on the Elitebook (3y NBD), but until my new 8560w is here I don´t really want to have it taken away for repairs.
Any ideas? -
-
I guess it's fine...

Hi !
I've got a 8530P with a Hitachi 250 GB hard drive, which I find very slow in Windows 7. I have tuned and tweaked looking around the internet, but it is still quite slow and it takes a long time to login before it's ready for me to work on.
I have been in contact with HP Support, but they were of no help.
I have tested the hard drive in HD Tune and Passmark and it states the performance as....LOW :-(
I have been looking for tests to show what gain in performance I could expect switching to a SSD. My 8530P has got an Intel ICH9-E/M SATA AHCI Controller. Any comments ? -
What CPU and how many RAM?
-
-
Running Passmark and downloading baselines from other users I find that my hard drive is left quite behind with a score of 326.5. Other scores starts at 529 and the highest gets 2185 - it is not possible to read details of the system
-
With a SSD you will get better performance. I was very pleased when I installed a SSD on my HP 8530w, which also has the Intel ICH9-E/M SATA AHCI Controller. A 64 GB SSD is enough. You can use your current HDD with a caddy in the place of the optical drive. -
Thanks a lot, maximinimaus !
I will try that out. Looking at a Kingston SSDNow V100 64GB, OCX Vertex 2 og Crucial M4 (if its SATA 6 GB interface is backward compatible with my SATA 300 interface - need to investigate that). -
You can checkout the compatibility in the SSD forum at NBR.
