If anyone is planning on upgrading their 8530, here's my experience upgrading an 8530p to a quad core processor and replacing the Radeon 3650 graphics card with a Quadro FX 770M, as well as modifying the cooling system for better performance - it's worth a read, if only to decide between an X9100 and a quad core.
-
I'd like to check the temperatures against this of my X9100.
Thx. -
Here's HWinfo idle and under Prime95 load for 15 minutes. I'd like to see the X9100 temps at stock - the qx9200 goes slightly over 80 overclocked to 2.8, but I almost never overclock it since it's never fully loaded anyway...
By the way, SuperPi isn't good for multi core load - it only loads one core to 100%, the others are at ~30%...Attached Files:

Thank you.
Do you know the purpose/meaning of sensor External 1?
It seems to me it triggers(among others) the spinning of the fan.
If it gets below 48°C the fan falls down to about 2300 rpm.
I want to do something that it increases slower and drop faster.
Do you have any clue? -
I think that's the north bridge temperature sensor, cause it has about the same temperature (and even higher) as the GPU and CPU at full load - and it's sandwiched between them on the heatpipe.
You can modify the speeds table with HWInfo - I use it to set the fan to higher RPMs than the standard when playing games or rendering video. You need to play around with the fan speed table and see which RPM/temperature settings are best for you (the settings are accessible by clicking the fan icon in HWinfo sensors window, by the way). Also write down the default settings or you'll have to remove and reinstall HWInfo if you mess something up... -
I have a 8530P and I have been reading the forum about upgrades and the like. I now need help in selecting a new screen (I cracked it). I do a lot of excel/word/browsing work but very little gaming. I am looking for suggestions for a replacement screen.
-
I did a quick search for "wifi" in this thread but couldn't find any clues...
The wifi adapter that's apparently used in the Elitebook 8530p ( Intel® Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 and Intel® WiFi Link 5100 Products) should be capable of N speeds but it only connects to my router at G speeds. I've tried the standard Intel driver but it's apprently not compatible. Did HP ever get around to releasing an N driver? -
Wireless N and TKIP do not work together, and it will downgrade the connection to 54Mbps.
(Just as an alternative possibility) -
Say, does anybody happen to know approximately where/what the "DTSZ" and "CPUZ" thermal zones correspond to? I'm looking at SpeedFan right now, and I see the following temperatures:
GFXZ: 30 C
DTSZ: 51 C
BATZ: 47 C
CPUZ: 49 C
LOCZ: 38 C
Core 0: 39 C
Core 1: 39 C
The two "Core" temperatures are from the on-die thermistors on the CPU; the others are all ACPI thermal zones.
It seems like the CPUZ thermal zone is what's making my laptop idle with the fan always on, despite "fan always on when on AC" not being set. -
With my 8530w the fan slows down when the temperature falls below 48 C.
See also post 604 and 605 of this thread. -
Still connects to the O2 at 54mbps
It still won't connect to the Netgear, either. That's more annoying, as the O2 router is a lot slower.
Although it does now see the NETGEAR-5G network - not sure I've ever seen that before. It won't connect to that either. Message "Windows was unable to log you on" -
I had issues with my linksys 3000 N router till i updated the drivers, just wouldn't give me a stable connection
- let me know if this helps -
The Box II is b/g only - I guess that's yours
Mine is a Wireless Box IV - capable of b/g/n speeds (or at least it should be) however I wonder if it's just dropping to the lowest common connection speed since uptime began (G) and hasn't got the intelligence to ramp itself up to N speeds again.
I've got the latest adapter drivers from HP website and latest Netgear firmware installed on the router (I don't think I've ever updated the Box IV firmware)
It's only a short passkey (the default) on the Netgear, so it's simply not possible I've mis-spelled it.
I don't suppose the two networks could be interfering as my Desire connects to both networks quite happily. I might try switching off the O2 wifi for the night to see what happens.
I will also check MAC filtering tonight, but my phone connects to the Netgear no problem, so I really don't expect that's the problem.
I wish I still knew where my little USB N dongle was so I could test that. -
i know a friend with extra smart cards for this laptop. pm me or something w/ how many you need and your price.
-
If those are real ProtectTools Java Cards, I'd like to know:
Do they work with the default Windows smartcard support and/or a minidriver automatically downloaded from Windows Update?
I've recently tried some cards from both Gemalto and HID, and only the former actually offered a driver bound to its SmartCard Device ID.
ProtectTools itself, while useful, makes my login screen take like 3 times as long to finish loading. -
these are the real ProtectTools Java Cards. no additional drivers needed. i love the extra security they provide.
note: i just noticed the 8560 and it has face recognition w/ the built in camera. i wonder if someone could get it working on this model?! i have too much setup up on this machine to do a test by uninstalling current protectools and installing new one. im scared the new s/w may do a model check. -
Also, anybody know if aftermarket 8510p panels are cross-compatible with 8530p's? -
Well I dont know if this has been discussed but I was able to install a q9000 quad core on my 8530p but it keep blue screening. The laptop only need a Bios upgrade for the cpu to function correctly. After the 3rd blue screen I went back to the t9400 dual core.
-
You need the 45 watt Quad board. And thats it!! It has 3 capacitors required to fire all 4 cores at once (to much of a load for standard board or 44 watt 2 cap X9100 extreme MoBo). All CPU run Full Throttle till OS installs CPU drivers on BOOT and thats it plain and simple. SMT companies wont even consider trying to modify a board and there is NO way U can do it at home. You need MoBo Part# 500906-011 available on ebay as of this post at $111. Cheers!

Or recently someone posted a modified BIOS that disables IDA, that is the problem that is causing your blue screen, quadcore IDA during boot. And it can even cause the proper Quad core mobo to BSOD with the gruntier (ES) quads.
Read all about it here (page 7 onwards is where it gets interesting)...

yes, N speeds are wayyy better than g. glad i finally took the plunge to upgrade router last year!
-
lately, if i hibernate and wait about 30m, i cant recover from it w/o holding down power. it weird in that the screen is totally black, my wireless, volume, etc. lights are still on but i cant get it to display windows login screen. any suggestions?
update: nevermind..went to device manager and disable everything allow to wake cpu. -
I own an HP Elitebook 8530p. I've had it for a few years and it's perhaps the best laptop I've ever owned. I'm now in the market to upgrade it. Of particular interest are the memory kits and the hard drive.
I'm considering moving up from the 320 GB drive it came with to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB SATA II 7200 RPM drive that I see available on Amazon; I think I've seen better deals but the price seems reasonable:
Amazon.com: Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 500 GB SATA II 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM 2.5 Inch Mobile Hard drive - WD5000BPKT: Electronics
I'm also looking to max the system RAM to 8GB. I presently have 2 GB installed now. I figure, why keep spending money doing upgrades when I can just take it to it's peak, right? Anyone have any good resources out there for a bargain on RAM? I've been eyeing some auctions on eBay and the prices for 4GB seem to be around $70 - $80. I'm not too crazy about the prices, but would take that plunge if there really just wasn't anything else out there. -
hi
I am using a hp elitebook 8530p (KR151 AV) with win 7 ultimate for a month now. I had it attached to a 19 inch LCD through the port and i would enjoy working on the large screen....keeping the laptop screen closed by closed lid. my display adaptor was HD ATI mobility Radeon 3650 and its control centre was also installed. whenever I had a resolution problem on the LCD, I,d simply right click on the screen, click the resolution tab, detect displays and after a blink the pc would automatically change to the desired resolution for the LCD, letting me continue as normal.
3 days back however there was a problem with the resolution and no amount of detection or changing would let me arrive at the correct resolution. Finally I disconnected the LCD completely and started working on the laptop screen to discover that my resolution was stuck at 1280 X 800. To resolve the issue I reinstalled the graphics driver but that didnt work. Finally I updated to the latest version, driver dated 7/3/2012, but the problem still persists. today i installed the really latest version AMD Catalyst 12.8 (8.982.0 July 27) , but no change in behaviour of laptop. i remember that earlier on my laptop would ask for a restart after graphics driver update, but now that doesnt happen, and i opt for a restart myself with no improvement still. i uninstalled the driver even from the device manager console, reinstalling it later but still nothing even close to a solution.
I did pose the problem on a couple of forums and have tried every single driver available on the manufacturers website but to no avail.
I,d greatly appreciate help here.
Thanks -
I sometimes have this happen if I close my laptop lid too early, before the machine goes into standby when I leave the office. The laptop detects the external display as my main display just before it goes into standby - and all hell breaks loose!
In which case I've found the only way to overcome the problem next day with swapped screens stuck on the wrong resolution, and my Taskbar & desktop icons on the wrong screen, is to disconnect the laptop from the docking station (which seems to force it to redetect only the laptop LCD) and then reconnect to the docking station (which forces it to detect the external screen). It's a simple solution but nothing else works! If you don't have a docking station I'm not sure what else you could try.
If autodetect fails you can always try overriding the setting in Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Adapter > List all Modes. This might not solve it, but worth a try.
I'm using the Radeon HD 3650 with fairly old drivers & Catalyst suite, on Win XP 32-bit.

Almost hitting 2013...is an 8530p NF672UC#ABA a good pick for a 10 and 13 year old for under $250?
I realize this laptop is a little aged...but it sounds like it is one of those "oldies but goodies"
They mainly surf the web, netflix, minecraft, youtube.
Looks like an upgrade might be SSD and ram might be necessary.
But it comes with the docking station, laptop bag, 2 power bricks and a mouse.
Looks like there are a bunch of them from a company that is cycling them out. -
I'm runnign win 7 64 with 8gb ram... no problems. SSD would be awesome. -
They GregMiddleton. I grabbed 2 of them after reading this forum. They are VERY nice and look brand new.
Only 2 issues I have found so far.
1. The 5400rpm harddrives are incredibly slow (so ssd will have to be purchased at some point)
2. The battery says it needs to be replaced. Has anyone found a generic affordable battery to use in the 8530p? -
very good performance with both. -
-
As suggested above, my 8530p is now "out of warranty" and usually the corporate procedures would be to replace and dump the stock at that point, before things start going wrong with it.
I'm using mine as a bartering tool to persuade IT to buy me a new data server, since it's still in perfect working order (faulty lid closing catch aside) and I've sourced another 6930p from another department for lugging around on the road, as it's lighter and smaller, but otherwise with the same spec as my 8530p. So I reckon between the two machines, I've saved the company £500 on a new laptop for me for at least a couple of years yet...
8530p with 4GB (3GB accessible) is running Windows XP x86, the 6930p with 2GB is on W7 x86. I've previously run the 8530p with W7 x64 and 4GB RAM and it's definitely a lot faster in Windows 7, however you do it. SSD is a cheap enough upgrade these days so you might as well do that and sell the 2.5" HDD.
Don't get me wrong, it's no i5, but it's perfectly good for light Office / web use and very solidly built, and with a big 15.4" screen, so great for kids to use, and with HDMI output so good enough to use as a home theatre PC if you wanted (although do read up on the different video cards so you can be sure it'll play 1080p films) -
After using the laptops and loading Windows 8 I can definately see that these are some nice machines.
I found this HP 12-cell Ultra-capacity Battery (AT486UT) specifications - HP Small & Medium Business products on HP's website...does anyone have any good/bad experiences with this? It says 10 extra hours of battery...which seems unreal. I also like the fact that it looks like it might add some clearance for the fan...for when the kids are sitting on the couch using it. (of course if it shoots the air straight through to the bottom of the battery...it's probably not a solution). -
Wifi not working? Reset the BIOS to defaults, reboot and it is now working. IT WORKS
-
Does anybody have an elitebook 8530w for sale? I was trying to post a WTB thread in the nbr marketplace, but i can't make a new thread there; probably because I'm a new member?
Anyway, I'm looking for an 8530w in very good to mint condition with everything working, and it MUST have the 1920X1200 screen. Preferably 4 gigs or more ram, at least the T9550 2.66Ghz processor, and the FX 770M gpu. Would also like it to have the optional webcam, a decent size hard drive, lightscribe DVD or bluray, and a working battery. -
You can try ebay! I just got mine HP 8530w yesterday fro 240$

Hi All. Glad to see this owner's thread is alive and well. I just inherited this laptop from my Dad. It had Vista on it and I wiped and installed Windows 7. I think something is wrong with the hardware because EVERYTHING is slow. Vista was slow, the new install process for Windows 7 ran VERY slow, and now it is running slow with Windows 7.
The hard drive seems to be fine, but I am not 100% sure. Everything works, it is just sllooooowww. Before the Win7 install I did a BIOS reset to defaults. What's a good way to troubleshoot this? I am willing to step through some checks if someone is willing to help me with this. I thought I'd post here in case this might be a known issue with these machines.
Thanks

Thanks for your thorough and thoughtful response Indrek. Much appreciated.
So I find that cpu is pegged at 100%. perfmon.exe is running at 41% svchost at 36%, etc. Essentially nothing is running except perfmon. Again this is a fresh install of Win 7 Ulimate x64. The previous OS (vista Business x64) and even the install process of the current OS ran slow. Something is wrong hardware/bios wise. I tried updating to the latest bios from the hp site with no change in behavior.
The computer is seeing all 4GB of memory and reporting ony 772MB in use, so I don't think memory is an issue. It seems to me that there is an issue with the cpu. Could this be a voltage or other setting in the BIOS? Win7 is reporting the cpu is a Intel Core 2 Duo [email protected]. Perfmon also reports low disk activity and queue length.
What now? -
perfmon.exe = resmon = Resource Monitor = The program I am using to see the performance stats. I can close it but then I am flying blind.
How do I check the actual running cpu frequency? -
I am starting to think this is a cooling or power supply issue. I see the fan on the bottom of the laptop is running a seemingly normal speed and sound level. I did notice after several hours of being on, the left side vents were quite warm. The laptop is super clean and I tried to vacuum the vents just to be sure.
Also, maybe you can help me check if I have the right power supply. I'm using HP Part no 462603-002 19Volt 150Watt. -
Suddenly it's working Ok. I don't know why. Perhaps the vacuum. I dunno. Maybe because I am running without the battery in? The battery doesn't charge.
-
-
-
Weird huh?
I think the battery is DEAD and apparently is so broken it is affecting CPU performance. STRANGE! The battery never gets warm either, by the way. -
-
Just got the 8530p and i must say its crazy and very, very well build. Added an ssd (kingston v300 60gb) and swapped mechanical drive into caddy. While working in office/programming/surfing for collage there is virtualy no difference in speed while compared to my desktop rig also featuring ssd.
I must say crazy machine -
Well the kids love the laptops they got for christmas 8530p's,...and then I put 180gb ssd's in them.
I really couldn't have gotten them better laptops at the $230 range with bags, docking station, mouse...the graphics boards are playing Minecraft, Sims3, Portal 2 and other stuff just fine.
I went ahead and found one without the dock and bag for $200 for myself....I wish it was a 17inch but the solid feel is worth the loss.
It came with Vista and for whatever reason Microsoft gave me an offer to upgrade to Win8 pro for $15.00...so now its win8 pro. -
I'm thinking of upgrading radeon 3650 with quadro 770m. Is there any difference between dual core ati and dual core nvidia cooling system? I've been looking at pictures of both part numbers but couldnt find any difference. Heck i'm thinking of dismantling my on 8530p and keep its heatpipe next to screen just to compare with pictuers availible online.
Any1 who went on with upgrade can help out? Do i really need new heatpipe/heatsink, or my old one (dc + ati) will do just fine?
