I've allready replaced its 240gb hdd with kingston v300 60gb, works like a charm. There are total of 7 screews to take hdd out. 2 on the external bottom casing. 1 to get "hdd caddy" out, then you pull little "strip" and you pull the caddy out and there. Then there are 4 screews left that hold disk to caddy.

ok, thanks. i was also looking at possbly installing a 2nd hard drive but it appears dvd writer would have to be removed and i think use different caddy is what was said earlier in the post. i dont want to remove dvd writer and couldnt understand why some pcs dont come with this option now?!

im thinking the 2nd hard drive would need a hard drive caddy to hold it in place in place of the dvd writer.

My 8530p laptop has a 2.8ghz T9600 cpu in it. I put in a 3.06ghz T9900 cpu in which is supposed to be compatible with it.
After I put it in, I get no video at all. Any idea why?

well, you could also use the USB connector to have an external hard drive.. I do this with a 3 TERAbyte hard drive.

you could be sneaky and just stuff another hard drive in that opening, however you can buy a caddy which is the same size as the dvd which makes it much easier and secure. You can get a generic caddy for about $8 on Ebay.

update: I've decided it has to be external.

Can anyone tell me if the 8530W will support a P8800 or P9700 with 100% certainty? I'd like to replace the T9600 with something cooler and these are my 2 choices as they are as fast as I can get in a 25w CPU.

Well, sticking with my T9600 for now and just undervolted it. Going to replace the whole thing within 6 months and hand the 8530W off to my brothers.

New question. Is around 80* C full load normal for the FX 770M in this unit? I've undervolted the CPU as far as it will go with RMClock and the CPU even gets to a rather warm 75*C under full load so is there anything that can be done that is a common fix for these to drop the temps or am I seeing about normal temps?

I got the load temps after playing STALKER SoC for an hour on medium @ 1920x1200 and it was barely playable but playable non the less of course I will tweak the setting further when I have time.

Temps are fine - both gpu and cpu share same heatpipe so there cant be that much difference between them anyways.

this laptop runs very hot being a DTR

i have an old 6930 that i always wanted to replace

i picked up a mint 8530w with quad 9100 and the std. fx770

i put in a cheap 120gb ssd and put on win7 - i dont think this thing will ever run right under win8

what a fantastic laptop - fast high res, if anything i think wuxga is too much for a 15"

bad thing is its really heavy and the battery isnt any good but it is a very high performance machine, no one complains a Lamborghini uses a lot of fuel

i'm using a whitelist f13 bios... is there anything good about the IDA bios?

Ok, I've been searching a bit but it wasn't very easy to find anything in this huge thread..

Let's say i have an 8530w and want to upgrade the GPU. Whats the options?
I guess that there's a whitelist in the bios that limits the options? I tried to download a non-whitelist/dual ida bios (from here, i think) but all the links were broken, Is there any other place where i could get it from?

Would a gpu from a (dead) 8540p work without issues? "Quadro NVS 5100M". Based on 880M so it should be better than 770M.

Seems like X9100 or T9900 are the choices for a cpu upgrade? They are pretty expensive however..

Hi. I'm looking for a second laptop with a 15" display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, high resolution, and no num pad. These are impossible to find new, but I know that the 8530w meets that description.

There seem to be tons of 8530w's on eBay for between around $200 and $250 USD. As I understand it, that's less than 1/10 the cost of it new.

I know you all are probably partial to this line and model. but how good a deal is that?

There are a number of variations mostly wrt processor, like a T9400 vs T9600. What's the highest end model that retains the basic physical configuration?

I know it's a few generations behind what's current, but how out of date is it really in terms of performance? What can't it do?

    All insight appreciated.

    Thanks!

T9400 in mine, it's capable of just about anything, but slowly :)

Stick 4GB RAM and Windows 7 x64 on it, and it's a perfectly good Office, web, video machine. Very snappy. It's no i5....

Can't comment on prices as I'm in GB but in the second hand market anything that old in excellent condition must be built well. And these are solid

Get the X9100 version around $350 (refered to as 8530w Extreme Version-same external case and maglev Sunon fan as QuadCore) Quadcore motherboard for $50-60, QX9300 for $160+ Quadcore Heatsink for $45. This is only proper way to do this. Its all on ebay as of this Post.
My QX9300 windows experience index is 7.4-7.4-6.4-6.4-7.8 with Samsung 840 pro 128gb (284 read-275 write) IOPS- 50214 read--22178 write. Smaller Sata 6 drive on Sata 3 (8530w) interface doesnt take the hit on Sequential writes. Not too shabby for Obsolete Machine? Eh!!
    Cheers!

This is the best notebook HP ever made.

Great keyboard and boots from esata.
For me T550 is enough. WEI 6,3.
The 1920x1200 screen is great. Chose one with Samsung LCD.
    And with old bios version.
    And replace HDD with SSD.

    Thanks for the reply.

Not sure I'm understanding everything in your reply, but your enthusiasm is appreciated!

"Extreme Version-same external case and maglev Sunon fan as QuadCore) Quadcore motherboard for $50-60, QX9300 for $160+ Quadcore Heatsink for $45."

Are you saying that these are possible upgrades to the base unit? Over and above an 8630w X9100 for around $350?

What would be the downside to the basic unit as originally specced and shipped?

    Thanks

    Thanks much for the reply.

How would I know it has the old bios version? By the ROM date? The video BIOS revision? What makes the old one better?

Is there any reason why the 8530w couldn't run, or wouldn't run as well, a 64-bit Windows 7? Any other limitations, due to age, etc, such as maximum HD size, or ability to work with an SSD?

I'm liking the idea of getting something like this than paying about the same for a new lower end box that comes with Windows 8 but without a touch screen (which I don't want anyway), or paying twice as much (or more) for a more powerful new one also with Windows 8, or even with Windows 7, but a 6:9 screen and a num pad on a chiclet keyboard.

The 8530w's keyboard layout is virtually identical to the one on my Toshiba Satellite L305-S5918. I love it (it's what I'm on as I type this) and it's still running strong. It's also about the same vintage as the 8530w, but I need a second lappy and I'd like to get something with more oomph.

Anyone care to speculate how the 8530w would compare to my Toshiba?
    Satellite L305-S5918

    Thank you!

    @MadGirl Disease
FYI: With samsung 840 pro ssd for OS and hitachi 7200 rpm 1tb 32mb cache in drivebay for movie storage. A file from a USB 3 Jumpdrive Bursts at 40-42 mbs for first 3rd of file , then settles to 32-34 mbs for the balance of transfer. Personal experience with USB 3 Expresscards has been overheating and power surges with machine freezing requiring Power Button crashdive and reboot.
    Cheers!!
edit: testing shows initial burst at 50+ mbs

no unknown devices, and I've looked through the hidden devices as well. it's just not there. also this model doesn't have a dedicated bluetooth LED, the wireless LED (that is blue when on/red when off) is wifi indicator. yes bluetooth is enabled in BIOS.

yes, it boots from esata and this is one of crucial reasons I have bought a 3 year old used notebook in 2012.

I do not like to have too many systems on one HDD, and I can even connect an old IDE HDD I have plenty of.

Unfortunatelly, I have upgraded bios to F20, so I have white list.

Waiting for a mobo for a penny with old bios.

i kept my bios on f13 i believe. i dont know what the lady/gentleman above is speaking of about a modded bios that provides additional capabilities like dual-IDA, or remove restrictions like WLAN whitelisting that are present in HP's factory BIOS images. what would ve the benefit? im sure there are some but just dont understand the terminology.

the bios version is in the system information page in BIOS,

you can not downgrade from F20,

true, the latest is better but you can not (I can not) replace with a modded bios without whitelist, one of the stupidest and inconvenient things HP is doing to customers.

The other is that as far as I know the 30ty series is the last with esata boot ability,

any way the 8440p I also own does not have it, and, the keyboard with the same layout as in 8530 has not so pleasent mechanical feeling.

I like this layout, I mean the space between keys and direction keys, due to I am writing in darkness without looking at the keyboard, so touch finding of arrows keys is easy

my brother purchased the 8540w several months back. these laptops seem to be taking off. i even saw charles barkley in a tv commercial for elitebook a few weeks back. i turned all security and would be scared to change anything bios related at this point. ill have to pass on modded bios and its benefits. i read the bios update info for my 8530w and wasnt impressed so i left it alone. im glad i did.

having original BIOS you can not put even the WWAN from HP 40 series, which differs in frequenciens only,

dual IDA is an alternative to the procesor upgrade, faster cpu about 10%

Can anyone say what kind of difference I would find between a 8530w with a 3.06 Ghz processor and a 2.8 Ghz processor, if both had the same memory, etc?

Are there variations *within* each of those 2 speed levels? Like are there different 2.8 Gz models?

Is a faster processor really worth holding out for?

    Thank you!

by the way, a guide on modded bios is needed,

Unfortunately I have a new mobo replaced by HP serwice so it is upgraded to F20,

is any chance to do anything with that?

Which one of the modded bioses is safe ? no adware ?

puttnig the WWAN from 8440 is crucial as that from 8530 does not work with my provider.

does the one with the 8440 wwan support 4g speed through the service provider? the one i have supports 3g only and would crawl. i like to leave that service in the past and not rekindle nightmares. lol. do you have to replace the wwan module also on the notebook for the 8440?

however the t9900 is rated much more than results from the clock,
    but in my opinion, not,
    I have 8440p with i5 faster something like 25% (compared to T9550, i use 7z benchmark),
but I do not see a difference in a real work
(and with 8440p you need external monitor in order to do something usefull)

my advice is to get the fastest processor with multi core so that you dont HAVE to do it later. you may want to but dont have to.

yes, I've toggled it. again no bluetooth in device manager, no category no unknown devices. Yes it worked in windows 7 and vista before that.

it doesn't install. tried forcing windows 7 compatibility but still won't install. I gather this is because windows 8 has its own toggle method which doesn't work because there is no bluetooth option for me only wifi.

Uninstall HP wireless assistant. Download HP Connection Manager (2011) from 8530 downloads and install. Google and Download Intel Driver Utility, OK Husdawg app and run driver check.
    Cheers!

Thanks. HP Connection manager works with windows 8 and I can toggle bluetooth with it. It essentially replaces the wireless assistant for me.

Thanks for all the replies above.

I've pretty much decided that I will be buying an 8530w, and now am just waiting to find one that meets my criteria.

    Looking forward to it.

FYI: I have been running Samsung 840 Pro 128gb OS drive for last 8 months. AS SSD Bench- Sequential R/W 275/262 MB/s
Downloaded latest Magician software yesterday which enables 840 Pro to run in RAPID mode (like 840 EVO) AS SSD Bench as below.
Seq. R/W 504/604 MB/s IOPS: R/W 66113/60906 4K-64 Thrd 258.25/237.91 MB/s. Thought this might be of interest to those considering a new SSD
Looks like some life left in the Ol Rig yet, Eh!!
Look at the sequential writes!!!!! unreal
    @veloscaper
If you leave Connection Manager running you can toggle bluetooth by right click in tray.
