    Hello

As I mentioned earlier in this thread I had some problems with the performance of some programs on my 8530p. When I got my new notebook I wiped the entire HD using the Disk Sanitizer program (HP support suggested this) and then installed XP with the installation disk that was supplied from HP. I installed all drivers from the HP driver disk and updated to SP3 from MS Update. However, some of the programs I installed performed really bad (sluggish, strange timing issues an so on) and I spent many hours of reinstalling, program manufacturer support but no luck.

I started to suspect the SpeedStep function of the CPU and discoverd that if I had an application running that keept the CPU busy (not let it speedstep down) the timings in my program worked fine. Since it is not possible to deactivate the SpeedStep function in the HP BIOS I could not really test my theory. A user in another forum suggested me to try the AMD dual core fix: add the /usepmtimer setting in my boot.ini file and suddenly everything work OK!!!

I am curious, am I really the only one that has faced this issue with 8530p?

All of you 8530p users who have installed Win XP, havn't you faced some strange behaviour after installing the Win XP?

Link to MS hotfix that 'fixed' my issues:

I cant speak for the 8530p, but I have some questions of my own for the 8530w. I noticed when I was tinkering with the nvidia control panel that whenever I left the "adjust image settings with preview" window open for about a minute while I was surfing through other windows, my screen would start to flicker a couple times a second untill I closed the "preview" window. Now I have noticed that the same flickering occurs if I am watching a movie with MPC and start messing with other windows.

Could anyone experiment with the preview window in the nvidia control panel to see if this is all 8530w's starting to flicker or just mine.

    1.Open the nvidia control panel
2.Click on "adjust image settings with preview" tab with the spinning image. (should open by default to this window)
    3. Open firefox or whatever and tinker around for at least 2 minutes while allowing the preview to spin in the background.
    4. See if the screen starts to flicker or not.

Any ideas why this might be happening, is this normal? I would update my graphics driver to see if that would fix it if the new driver didnt mess with my screen brightness...

    Thanks

I haven't checked with the nvidia control panel but my laptop screens flickers while playing video files too. I'm sure it's a driver problem. This is my first laptop with Quadro and the drivers have been disappointing regarding general windows usage thus far. I really hope the latest whql drivers correct some of the issues (there are other issues besides the flickering, like buggy 3d acceleration of h.264 decoding on some movies) and that HP will adopt it soon, because the official driver breaks the screen brightness.

I have bought a HP Elitebook 8530p about 2 months ago and here's what I think about it so far.

-I have mixed feeling about the keyboard. It feels a little bit on the cheap side, especially the big keys (shift, spacebar). But I still is better than most consumer laptops.

-The overall design is kinda stylish and adds a more professional look and is sturdy. But the locking mechanism for the LCD lid is really clunky and needs a good amount of pressure to hear the click to lock it tight.

-The P8600 CPU in it is fast enough to run VMWare instances, lots of apps and gaming, with acceptable temps (does not go further 55c full load). Same goes for the GPU which can play most today's games at medium to high settings with no problems. You might not play it with FSAA though. GPU Temps never goes past 75c.

-The hdd is really really slow (5400rpm). This is my first upgrade I will do to it.

-The integrated DVD-RW drive works alright and never did a coaster up to date BUT it makes a hell of a noise with some media.

-I don't know which brand of screen I have but I am satisfied with it up to date...Until the CCFL starts to fade.

-All integrated components (USB, Firewire, HDMI, Sound jacks, VGA, etc) works well and had no troubles up to date. The fourth usb port is handy, especially when the laptop is used as a workstation with external components.

-The included AC Adapter does not heat up much (120w)

-The 8cell battery gives me 4.7 hours of power at minimum power usage (Wifi off, sound off, minimum brightness) and about 3 hours at normal usage (Wifi on, sound on, Adaptative brightness, adaptative CPU) which satifies me.
However, the battery itself feel a little loose in the socket. You can clearly feel it when transporting it in your bare hands.

-The Wifilink 5300 works really well, especially on multi-link N networks.

-The Ambilight is really a nice touch, in my situation at least.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with this laptop and it's features. However, I think you pay little too much for what this laptop is offering. At first sight, it is a great laptop packed with great features and good overall quality. But after a while, you realise it's not worth the 1.5k+ price tag it has. Don't get me wrong, mine never failed up to date and is really stable but it does not justify it's price.

On a side note, I paid around 1000 including taxes and shipping for mine and I think it's the right price to pay for it. For 1k, I am a satisfied user.

I guess that's it for now, i'll add more eventually.

PS: Do you guys have found an updated Catalyst driver for the Radeon 3650? I tried Driverheaven but it does not work for the 9 Series.

Since it's not explicitly said on the HP website, these features must not be available for the EliteBook but I still would like to ask the following questions:

    1. Is the keyboard spill-resistant?
    2. Is the hard drive shock-protected?

I don't really think the keyboard is spill resistant from the look of it. My Vaio VGNFE had a keyboard that looked more spill resistant than this one.

The hard drive is protected with HP 3DGuard so yes it is. The system can detect if there is too many G's of movement and shuts down the HDD to prevent failures. It is also more sensitive when the laptop lid is closed (for transportation).

The HP Ambilight is rather nice. It's a bright white LED on top of the lid, where a webcam is located normally. You open it with a little button near it and it's sheds some light toward the keyboard and trackpad. It's not the brightest thing in the world but it's enough to see what you are typing in the dark. A backlit keyboard is better but the ambilight is an in-between solution.

Thank you for the reply, Vols XX. It's little disappointing to hear that the keyboard is not spill-resistant in a premium business laptop like EliteBook.

From what I have seen from my keyboard when i pried it off was that it was somewhat resistant. The actual keyboard seems to be sealed on the bottom, so no liquid would get through. Where it is not resistant, is around the edges of the keyboard where there is a small gap, I can see water running down into that gap and into the guts of the laptop if too much is spilled on the keyboard. I could be wrong because I was not checking for this when I opened it up, but if my memory serves correct, the keyboard is partially resistant to spills.

that seems like a big deal breaker if it was only partially spill resistant.

Also, has anyone tried calibrating their screens?

I sent in my 8530p for repair to fix two issues. One was the lid snaps open on impact when placing it on a hard surface and the other was the power adapter where it connects to the notebook keeps falling off just for small movements while in the lap. I called in for status and was told they didn't find anything to repair and its fine. I got it back and now have a couple of issues -

    - the laptop surface is scratched at a couple of places
    - During boot it displays this message - BIOS does not support the current stepping for processorFB
    - the laptop now has a 2.0 GHz processor instead of a 2.53 Ghz processor
    - scrolling doesnt work. Screen keeps refreshing line by line.

I called in and was told to send it in again. I asked if I can return or get a replacement if the issues are not fixed even when I send it back for the second time. Was asked to call 800-334-5144 and talk to a supervisor.

Seriously disappointed what with this being an Elite notebook and all. Sorry I bought it. I would ideally like to return it and if not get a new replacement. Since I am out of the one month return period what would be the best thing to do at this point. Please help.

Interestingly the repair summary sheet says this -

    - identified an issue with casing(palm rest, screw corners, feet, etc.) and so replaced it.

    - identified an issue with system board and replaced it

    - identified an issue with CPU and replaced it.

If the CPU/system board/casing have an issue in the first four months what kind of an elite notebook is this.

    Lets call it the 'crapbook'.
i have heard some complaints about the lid locking mechanism, but that? During Repair? That surely is a big messup on their part considering the CPU swap, and the laptop's condition afterwards. It appears that HP hasn't been doing what their supposed to do regarding the recent problems; and according to a customer service rankings, HP was dead last in a # of qualities.

Try the Mobility Modder with the updated executable. The normal desktop Radeon drivers seem to work really well with the Mobile Radeon HD3650, and even throttling is supported for power saving.

It should be noted that HP did modify the lid locking mechanism. I had quite a few Elitebooks exchanges and my latest 8530p seems to have the lid locking mech fixed. I no longer need to use a lot of force to close the notebook nor does the lid pop open during transport.

I forgot the exact link, but I talked to someone on the HP business support forums and many users were complaining about the Elitebook's locking mechanism. It is way more serious with the 6930p but the problem also exists on some 8530 models. It seems that the tech support who posted a reply on the forum stated that some of the locking pegs at the top of the monitor were made a little too short for the lid to remain securely locked in place. He said HP was aware of the problem (as early as early Dec IIRC) and that they would replace the locking mech if anyone brought in their notebooks complaining of the problem.

I had mine replaced (and HP promised unlimited replacements until satisfaction guaranteed) after talking to their sales manager for the business support channel. However, I was mainly complaining about the CPU whine.

If you ask me they just repaired your laptop according to a repair plan for another laptop. Probably someone else sent in his laptop with cpu problems and got his locking mechanism and power plug repaired.

    Hello all,

This week I received a new HP 8530p (KS045UT) that I purchased from Buy.com. On first look, this is a beautiful machine, with a solid feel. But upon booting it up, I am very disappointed with the quality of the monitor. It looks very dull and dim. Colors are not vibrant, and whites are light gray -- not white.

I chatted with HP support and they suggested installing the Vista Business OS and then all updates to pull the most recent video driver and I see no difference.

Also, at highest res (1680 by 1050 pixels) the characters are crisp and clean (still dull and dim). But IMO, they're way too small for this 15.4" monitor. I also have an HP DV5t which side-by-side (both set at 1280 by 800 pixels) is much brighter and the characters are more crisp/better defined than on the 8530p.

As somewhat of a compromise, I've found 1440 by 900 pixels to be the most comforting on the eyes, but still...i'm very disappointed with this monitor.

Is this a problem that some of you have had, or is my unit defective? What resolutions do you have your 8530p's set at?

Any input that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

PS. Yes, I have increased the screen brightness to the max. Also, I just downloaded PC Wizard, and it identifies my monitor as a "N154Z1-L01".

    A new BIOS, F.09 (10 March 2009), for the 8530W was posted.

    Changelog:

    - Enables the F9 (Boot Options) and F12 (Network Boot) keys to be functional during system startup, without first requiring the BIOS administrator password.

    - Adds the capability to customize the startup (boot) screen. NOTE: The ereplo08.exe utility is required to change the default HP logo to a customized logo.

    - Fixes an issue where pressing the Caps Lock key inadvertently disables the
fn+num lk function, even though the num lk light remains illuminated.

    - Fixes an issue where the system takes a long time to boot when some external USB hard drives are attached.

    - Fixes an issue where the BIOS configuration utility fails to capture settings
    in the F10 Setup Utility.

I flashed my 8530W and it flashed OK.

Image quality is always bad when you don't run your monitor on native resolution, you should revert back to 1680x1050 and set the DPI and/or Fonts higher.

This is the worst thing you can do for better colour, try: brightness to 50%, contrast 55%, gamma to 20-30%. Of course the ambient light sensor must be off. (I am talking about the video driver settings, not the quicklaunch buttons)

    Hi,

just bought used hs2300 3G modem and wanted to install it into my Windows XP-equipped 8530p. Installation was OK, after some tries and errors I found right MultiWWAN HP driver. Modem is recognized well in System properties (as Sierra Wireless HSDPA). Modem also appears now in HP assistant, where I can also switch Bluetooth and Wlan card. Unfortunately, it shows up as disabled.
I can't find any way how to enable it. It can't be found by generic Sierra 3G watcher sw.

Can anybody deal with this situation? Thanks for suggestions.

Ok, let me summarise my experience with the 8530p laptop. Got it for a nice price (1250€ ;), FU456 model.

    First the good:
    - looks good, solid feeling
    - display is good, good resolution and it stays put (no wobbling)
    - disk protection
    - additional ram was easy to install
    - keyboard is solid (but I will get back to this later in bad)
    - included software and guarantee is reasonable for the price
    - built in cam
    - touchpad+stick
    - usb on left and right
    - hdmi, esata, solid dvd writer

    The bad:
    - had problems with VGA port (no picture), since I was the only one with that problem service had to change mainboard and later the graphic card becouse mainboard was not at fault
    - I like the keyboard otherwise, but had problems with some of the keys... so I had it replaced only to get one even worse - one key (N) was broken and kept flapping around when pressed a few times. So I had to get a third keyboard (this is a serial problem I noticed on the forum). Now its kinda ok, just some keys click dangerously. Well, while it has 3 year guarantee I don't fret too much. They will fix.
    - When I put the PC to sleep sometimes when it wakes 3 buttons die (info, wireless and presentation) and the volume gets messed up - when I change volume using the "slider" it switches wireless on and off madly :D This is fixed when I put PC to sleep again. Hibernate is ok though.
    - Lately CPU is overheating in games (95+ °C), I clean it every 3 months (open keyboard and blow for now, I have to get smaller torx screwdrivers) but it didn't help a lot. So I suspect they messed up at the service - they changed motherboard but left the same cpu and gpu, so maybe a bad contact or too much/too few paste. Service again I guess :(
    - Ambient light sensor makes picture a tad too dark (like 30%) and hence unreadable for me.
    - stupid placement for sound plugs (if you have straight plugs you will damage them with your mouse)
    - fancy looks but gets dirty easily :)
    - slow slow hard drive
    - oh yeah... had lots of problems with hdmi audio since drivers weren't included (hdmi audio drivers for ati)

Thats about it. I still think it was a solid purchase. With 3 year guarantee I guess they will have to fix it :) And since we have like 5 different service providers here I can chose the one who will fix it on my terms. Most of the issues are not very critical. VGA not working was and is fixed, keyboard is fixed. Now I need only this overheating crap fixed and I can live hapily.

Some questions though - does anyone know about changing gpu/cpu in this model? I would like to have HD4xxx later if possible (quad is probably not I guess?). Also about the second hard drive, the bay (hd included) is around 170€, so what do I do with my dvd+rw then? Can I plug it on e-SATA somehow?

    edit:
Ok, I am not that happy with this laptop anymore. Just tried to remove battery and 2 little pieces of plastic fell out. Then I found out that out of two plastic little "hooks" that hold the battery in, both are broken! And only pieces for one of em fell out. So, I have to conclude they broke one of those in the service. And since this is the first time I was removing battery after service, they probably damaged the first one too and it broke just now. So nice. In the end nobody will want to change this for free. "physical damage" and they will put blame on me. F*** it all. And the overheating problems are only since the last service.

So finally after I have red the entire posting about 8530p/w - is it a really elite book or a crapbook - beacause I am concidering buying one in the next couple of days. I need the higher performance, and I have been very happy with HP's line of notebooks so far. Is it really worth it? Could someone put together the final pros and cons about these two models?

PS: sorry for my bad english - currently I am thinking about 8520p/w with ATI gpu (firegl or radeon any help pls).

I have my 8530w since mid november. It's the second machine, as the 1st one had a broken video card and web camera.
My laptop experience includes an old gateway, dell inspiron (many models 13-17 inch) dell xps (13 inch models) and asus laptops.
I bought the 8530w because: I wanted a brand name laptop, 15 inch with a good video card (for games). Also I wanted a screen with high resolution (I can't stand WXGA on 15 inches). I did not want pure gaming laptops and HP and dell don't bring their consumer lines with higher then WXGA resolution to europe/romania. It was either 8530w or dell precision m4400 (I refuse to consider a MBP because I like windows and think apple computers are overprices in general). Price made the decision easy. My HP was 1400 euros, comparable dell was 2000+. I do not use corporate features and software though I am aware of them and I understand they are factored into the price.

I am very fussy about computers.

    Good points:
    - Performance, especially the nvidia quadro FX that i have.
    - Software (my unit came with both vista and xp dvds 32 and 64 bit).
    - Price (for the config it was relatively cheap)
    - Battery life: I can get 4+ hours on power saving and wifi/internet use; I consider this a very good performance for such a config (T9600 CPU, FX770, 7200rpm HDD).
    - The small details: Web camera is awesome for a laptop cam. The sound card (ADI) is also very very good compared to realtek. The touchpad is precise and very well textured (not to smooth but not too harsh).
    Grey points:
    - Build quality. The materials are very good but hp made some weird choices regarding materials and design. Screen hinges are weird and open up very easilly by accident. My keyboard had some issues regarding sticky key presses. I discovered that a wireless cable was routed under the keyboard and it created a bulge. Moved the cable, greased a few keys, now the keyboard is perfect.
    - Screen: I have WUXGA screen. It is sharp and has no grainyness but the colors are bad and washed out. Maximum brightness in kind of low. I would not call it a bad screen but it is a bit disappointing for a workstation. It has awesome viewing angles though, if that matters to you.
    - Power adapter: it is large and quite heavy. Keep it in mind if you plan to lug the laptop all day long. I bought a second adapter for home in order to keep the carrying weight down.
    Bad aspects/issues:
    - Overheating - my laptop overheats and shuts down when cpu and gpu are pushed to the max during games. It happens rarely but frequently enough to be annoying. I would have expected a workstation class computer to be rock solid no matter the circumstances
    - Quirks: The dvd drive would not read some dvds (even original factory ones). Now it reads them, don't know for how long. Touch controls are weird and buggy (same issue that neikius reported).

Overall I have mixed feeling about this laptop. Taken out of context I would call it mediocre. However compared to other models it stands out quite well. It is stable (except for overheating sometimes) unlike my dell Studio XPS 13. It is fast and generally well built (i appreciate the superior audio codec, camera, fingerprint reader and others). Just mind its shortcomings and be sure you can accept them.

Well, let me be ed. I went to the service today. And the broken battery-holding mechanism is a "mechanical error". That would be another way of saying: "you broke it yourself and get out".

About overheating (I have a really bad case) I found out they have to do some "stress tests" to see what is wrong. Hell yeah.

amihalceanu: did you try to clean the dust? I have to clean it like every few months.

Or you can try this proggie: http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ for temperatures and current cpu speed. Its not 100% accurate though.

edit: and about the laptop... I still consider it a good bargain and myself a very unlucky person :) Just check the keyboard first if you can. And that is easily replaced anyway.

As for the crappy battery slot I should have glued the battery in with a duct tape :S

I have had my 8530w since December,

So far everything has been fine with the machine. I have been less than satisfied with HP's customer service, but that is partially my fault. I purchased on the HP online store. This was a huge mistake, buy it through someone over the phone at HP so you have someone to talk with whenever you need to open up a new support case.

    Pros for my 8530w

Temps are low, idle at 30 load at 50
Keyboard is sturdy, touchpad is just right
Love the easy to reach mute button on the quicklaunch bar
    Battery lasts around 3 hours
OS (Vista 64) has been stable
Build seems sturdy (Battery lock a little loose...)
    Webcam is of high quality
IMO, sharp look, professional but also stylish
    Love the WUXGA

    Cons

Screen's brightness at 100% is good, but I wish I had more play room in case it dulls over the years
    Screen's colors mediocre
Weird Locking Mechanism, works fine, but could have been designed much better
No tv out capability to standard def tv's via s-video or RCA without pricey converter box, but this applies to 99% of all new notebooks... (Having said this, the HDMI cord works great for HD tvs)
Solid build seems to add to weight, kinda heavy

Overall I have grown to love my elitebook dearly. Sturdy, Reliable, Sharp Looking. I would love to see a 14 inch elitebook with a workstation graphics card, but till then, I am completely satisfied with my 8530w.

Im just keeping my fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong or breaks, cause when it does, im sure all hell will break loose dealing with HP customer service.

Just wanted to update that I finally got a replacement. After I sent it in for repair they just replaced the cpu/graphics card and sent it back. They didn't fix the webcam which wasn't working either and they didn't do anything with the scratches either. After one and half hour on the phone trying to get the webcam to work they asked to send it in again. I insisted on sending a replacement or allowing me to return it and they sent me a replacement. HP business support sucks.

    Hi,

anyone new tried the 90W adapter?

amihalceanu, is it still working good? Any side-effects?

To be sure - the part number is ED495AA? The one that came with is too big to carry around :)

    Thank you.

    A new BIOS, F.0B (20 April 2009), for the 8530W was posted.

    Changelog:

    - Fixes an intermittent issue where the video may be corrupted when playing an .MP3 file.

I flashed my 8530W and it flashed OK.

I'm thinking about buying an 8530p, but I could really use the advice of current users about the screen quality. That is the one part that I'm a bit hesitant. I've seen a few negative comments on various forums. Note I'd be getting the 1680x1050 display.

Really I just want to ask: How good is the screen? How bright is it? The other options would be Dell Latitude and Lenovo, so any comparisons to those would be great.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi shanteo,

I have a 8530w with1680x1050 display, the manufacturer is SEC (samsung?). The colors and viewing angles are good, no grain, and I also like the matte surface, but I'm not very satisfied with the bright, I think it's enough for normal use, but more brightness it will be better.

    sorry for my english.

That about sums it up. I use the brightness at 100%, which scares me because they dim over time. Its not enough to make me regret my purchase, buts its definitely disappointing.

That and the retarded locking mechanism...wow. Whoever was in charge of that should lose their job. When I first got my lappy a few months ago their was no problem closing the lid. Now i need to firmly press down over top of the the two locking holes.

The colors are alright, . The viewing angles are much better than my ex-Vaio, my friend's toshiba and most of the guys at college. However, the brightness is a little low. I just hope that the backlight won't fade soon.

My brightness is set around 50% when there is low light, around 75% during class (lots of lights) and 100% whenever outside or playing movies and games. Lower than 50% gets really low

Also, does anyone with the 250gb 5400rpm Fujitsu HDD find that it's RETARDED slow???

I have to make some synthetic benches soon but I am pretty sure the read/write performance is AWFUL.

    Next upgrade, WD Scorpio 320gb...

The ati firegl in the 8530w you are looking at is not a good gaming card, it is designed for opengl (CAD) processes. I guess it depends on the games your fiancee will be playing, but you would be much better off buying a laptop with a geforce 9600gs. I hate not to recommend an 8530w to someone else, because I love mine, but you may want to look for another laptop with a gaming card.

    Hi guys,

Is there any way to know who manufactures which panels? I'm currently weighing up the 8530W (with a 1680x1050 display) and the 8530P (with a 1920x1200 display). I'd prefer an LG panel for its brightness, but I don't know if we can guess this based on Elitebook model and display resolution?

    Thanks in advance.

If you are running Windows, you should be able to find this info in Device manager. The hardware ID is listed and then you can figure out the manufacturer. I can't remember where this is hidden but it is in one of the tabs.

I have the 1920X1200 and the screen is bright enough inside, but in lighter areas I miss a slightly brighter LED one. I had a m4400 and the LED screen was a bit better, this one makes up for it in other areas though, and the video settings can be changed to improve contrast etc..

I have an 8530W for sale with quad core etc... PM me if your interested.

So far no problems with overheating, id say the core's idle around 30-35 and max at around 50-55. The GPU stays between 50-65.

It could be the difference in processors maybe? Did you undervolt yet? How old is your 8530w, I hope they dont get too much hotter as time goes on.

My gpu (770FX) used to overheat in games. It doesnt anymore, I don't know why, but I am assuming it's a bios or driver thing. I'm afraid to put thermal paste on because I might lose the warranty.

ok at the time of writing that my laptop used to be hotter. of course the more ur hard drive is filled the the more the computer stress although i cant see how when just browsing. buti reinstalled and my temps are kinda or noral again. around 38-44c for my cpu's and 52c on average the gpu. but sometimes can go into the 60s shortly. maybe i block the fan at the time.

i tried undervolting at the time before reinstalling and it never helped. it was tellimg me my system was over heating lolk and im like so sh*t ,quick turn it off lol. my notebook is like used from Jan its that young lol. But the sad thing is all laptops get hotter as time goes on. but as long as your warrany is in then ur ok cos if overheating is bad when theyt test it then they replace the motherboard no matter how old.

To amilhalceanu, what bios and driver u suing and what temps was it over heating at? and what are they now?
