I use the latest bios from HP site. As for drivers I have installed nvidia ones as they are compatible now without modding the inf (it seems Quadro FX became supported some time this summer). I'm very please with the new nvidia drivers they seem to be much faster than the older versions HP posts on their site. The laptop used to overheat because the videocard reached 105 degrees celsius and shut down. Now it tops around 90, i have no idea why, I haven't messed with the cooling. It's probably a driver thing and not a sensor error because the fan revs up slower now and the air is cooler too. In order to overheat the laptop the best test I've seen is running heroes of might and magic 5. I know it's not very scientific (i know about orthos, furmark a.s.o. and have used them) but it's the program that seems to stress out the cooling system the most due to the fact that it uses both the cpu and the videocard to the maximum (also no idea why it does that as it should not be as resource consuming as crysis for instance). At any rate I'm more pleased now with the machine than I was when I bought it. The only regret I have is the screen.

yea i noticed nvidia supports quadro. the driver i found is 186.18. very good. that i think went to 92c.
i tried dox 185.85. that also was very good, probably better than 186.18. but i got slow down and went to 98c. but i was using the 9600m gt on it.
im about to try 186.03, im testing the temps with street fighter 4 so thats whee im getting the temps.
Also what can i do gaming cos its excellent to begin with then im testing again and theres insane slowdown. so the frames difference is like from 60fps to like 33fps. but it really has to be at 60fps in street fighter for it to be normal. so what can i do top prevent this throttling? -
Could someone be so kind to extract the GPU bios for me? It would be greatly appreciated! The Ati HD3650 bios, to be specific.
-
I ran street fighter benchmark on mine 1440x900 no aa rest max i get around 45fps, pretty decent. If you are getting throttling it's probably the cpu overheating. Use everest or speedfan or something to check the temps.
About the driver, I am using 186.03 from nvidia's site, no other mods, card is in quadro not geforce mode. There really is no reason for me to change it as I am very pleased with it.
-
So if im getting throttling. its cos of the cpu? not the gpu? i no that at the time of throttling they where both cpu and gpu at around 95c.
Im using the whql 186.18 and the quadro drivers. i have not noticed throttling. the first time i used them i did get it. but after testing other drivers and then going back to this one. besides no difference in temps the throttling hasnt happened. but i use u'volting now to help the temps slightly.
i have an excellent experience playing this very demanding game. and im quite suprised that the laptop has not be loud.
when i 1st ha this laptop with xp installed and tried rainbow six vegas 2. the noise and heat was attrosious. i was sad & disappointed wanted to sell it. but after trying vista think its cos the game hard to work so damn hard with single core rather than two.
Just want to find a way to keep the temps to 80c at load now till the thinkpads has a new line of GDDR3 4600 series gpus (lol do not suggest a cooler, laptop should be be designed with reasonbly good temps at load) -
I have had my laptop since november, same config as yours except for bluray. Like I said, back then it used to overheat and shutdown, no throttling. I'm 99% confident it was because of the videocard temps. I haven't gamed on it much since then but i have updated the bios and all other drivers regularly. I use vista 32 bit.
Now it will no longer shutdown, but it does get hot when both cpu and gpu are stressed. I assume it was a bios or video card driver that improved things. I have a laptop cooler and it does have some effect but I do not use it for this laptop daily. So all my test are done with the laptop on a flat wood desk at normal room temperature (around 23-24 degrees).
I know core2duo cpus can and will throttle around 100 degrees (depends on model) and theoretically the videocard should do the same. Except mine didn't, it just shut down. That is why I assumed it would be the cpu throttling (i have seen other cpus from same generation do this).
As for the temps, since both gpu and cpu are on the same heatpipe they will heat each other regardless which one is the culprit.
The cooling system is clearly underpowered. I would apply thermal paste but somehow I like having another 2 1/3 years of warranty. Also undervolting (as you do) should help, I'm just too lazy to do it since now it doesnt shut down anymore. -
lol yes i agree with you on the warranty thing. i had mine sice dec. but started warranty in jan only cos i decided to keep it. and lol wont void the warranty for the thermal paste. ill let them do that if i comlain of over heating.
Well i cant say i have update the bios really. idling right now my temps are
cpu 1: 37c
cpu 2: 33c
gpu: 47c
so i no my laptop is normal in terms of using it generally. i made a thread in the gaming section about your gpu temps under load with the 9600gt/ fx 770m where you could poll your notebooks average maximum and i see that everyones is relatively the same. So i assume its just he damned 9600m/770m that is hot.
im tempted to swap cards and add the 9650m gt. as its 55nm as opposed to ours on the 65mn and its supposed to be cooler as well as the advantage of better gaming. its just an idea but i no lenovo will have (i assume) there new line with 4600 series gpu. which i certainly must have.
But also tempted to have my first mainstream and go for a sager 8662 which has a nice sleek chassis like this but in dark and 15", but im a pointing stick user so im delayed and waiting to see if lenovo will deliver. -
Has anyone changed the screen on a 8530w. I'm getting quite annoyed with the low brightness on my WUXGA and I'd like to get a WSXGA+ and replace it. Anyone has any ideea how hard it is?
-
I've changed out screens on a lot of laptops. It is one of the more difficult parts to replace. Depending on how they are assembled, the little plastic snaps that keep the bezel secured can be very easy to snap. Also, if the screws are under rubber nubs, the glue that keeps the nubs in place may come off. If you are going to replace the screen you just have to take it very slow and be careful.
-
I'm considering getting a 8530w for CAD software, rendering and photo graphics. I'll probably go with the Qx9300 and WUXGA monitor. Any thoughts on a possible GPU update soon? The QuadroFX 2700M would be nice! Also, why just the 80gb SSD option? Any idea if this will change, possibly to 128-160gb?
Can anyone comment on HP customer service. I've never owned one before but the reputation for durability is good. -
Hi folks,
I've searched this thread and elsewhere, and nobody has answered this question:
Can the 8530w output to two screens via DVI (docking station) and HDMI simultaneously? Or does the DVI prevent you from using the HDMI jack?
Specifically, I am wondering if this will work with the Quadro FX 770M card.
Thanks,
Matt -
I have not tried it but i doubt it can. The videocard has 2 ramdacs and in laptops one of them is always connected to the lcd, so you only get one output no matter the form.
-
Have had the 8530p since april now. Amazing machine.

Hi
I am seriously considering buying the 8530w [ quad core, FX 770M, 4GB RAM, WUXGA 1920 x 1200 ]. I have been going through this post since the beginning and I have read a lot of bad reviews as well as good ones. Can someone tell me if it is worth the money compared to the Dell M440? Has HP fixed most of the issues reported here?
Also I don't plan to be doing much gaming on the laptop. Graphics programming mostly, so only the occasional flash games. I will also be making a dual boot machine with a Linux flavor as the primary OS. I am hoping that somebody who already owns 8530w can provide me with the pros and cons of the updated model. [ By "updated" I mean after the fixes for the initial complaints ]. Also how is the HP Business support?
Thanks -
Hi all,
Do you know whether the 8530 series have the same mobo layout than the older nx8220/nc8230/nw8240 laptops, which targetted the same segment?
Why asking? Well to tell my little story, I bought a nc8230 4 years ago at a huge price tag (1600). I was really impressed by the frame solidity and the overall performances. Sadly, this laptop experienced multiple problems, the last one being random freezes due to... bad soldering of the ICH! Yes... And I wasn't the only one to experience that. Of course HP doesn't want to exchange the mobo when the laptop is out of warranty, despite being an obvious manufacturing flaw.
My question is: does this quality problem still exist in newer series ?
This post isn't intended to be an HP flameout, but I'm considering buying an Elitebook to replace my failing nc8230, so I want to make sure that everything's working well this time.
Thanks

hi everyone! i just placed an order for this 8530w notebook and saw it can accept memory for 667/800/1066mhz memory. i selected the qx9300 processor also btw. should i go w/ the 667mhz memory because cpu-z will probably say the memory is downclocked even if i went with faster speeds?
-
Otherwise, I really don't know.... -
Thanks. Did you get any problem with your 8440?
-
Since I have had both of these laptops you speak of, and some in between, I'm afraid to say you really lucked out by getting the 82x0 series. Even at the time it really had nothing going for it. The previous model (nw8000) has almost the same specs, and was rock solid. The successor (nw8440) brought dual core and double the VRAM to the party.
When I had the HP tech out (again replacing a nw8240 mobo), he saw my 2 nw8000's and asked if I wanted to sell them to him. He said he never got service calls about that series, they just keep going and going, but the 82x0 series always needed new mobos all the time.
If I were you I'd cut my losses and get a 8530p/w. They are even more solidly built than their previous best chassis (they have a full metal bottom casing, instead of just a metal frame with plastic over it). Having used almost all of HP's buisness workstation lineup over the years, I fully recommend the 8530p/w. -
So I've had the 8530p for about half a year now, after the nightmarish return of the 6930p. The screen seems to be developing a purple blotch on the top right corner and I suspect its due to the different pressure being applied onto the back of the LCD from the aluminum lid. I only notice the purplish blotch on a completely dark, near black background so I'm going to let it slide. However, the screen seems to flicker ever now and then like the famous macbook LCD flicker. Hopefully if I send it in for repair they would let me upgrade to a LED one. I've also had some problems with the HDMI output and my Samsung TV would have refreshing "scan lines" horizontally moving upwards whenever I output my video to the TV. If I touch the cable, the image would go all pink and it seems to be a problem with the HDMI port connection coming loose on the 8530p.
The rubber studs near the touch pad below the keyboard has left a little scratch on the LCD bezel and so has the side of the touchpad, leaving a scratch mark right below the night light button. Apart from this, it seems that the cover of the LCD is really scratch resistant, but sadly, the corners of the lower casing is not too dent proof and the aluminum has dented round the corners near the LCD hinge.
Driver wise, HP seems to have done quite a good job at providing updates. The latest "Quick Launch Buttons" update has refreshed the outlook of the pop-up volume bar and even fixed the problem of programs minimizing to the taskbar whenever the touch sensitive volume buttons are used.
One little issue I've had is that I only recently noticed that the 8530p does not have an IR port. That being said, I can't use the nifty HP remote from the DV series that would also fit in the 8530p's Expresscard slot. -
-
And BTW, I enjoyed a student discount when I bought my nc8230 ; at that time it was more powerful and cheaper than IBM's T40/41p, and I absolutely wanted business notebooks. Sadly, HP seems to have screwed up with the 82xx series. They don't even want to acknoledge the flaw (I tried to explain my case in France and Malaysia, they wouldn't even care). I guess I'll soon be up to buying a new mobo on eBay... -
I had to have the keyboard replaced once and my CD-ROM drive is acting up again, but that was because I got a little too curious about the insides of my notebook... lol -
Is anyone running a dual external monitor setup with their 8530w with the NVIDIA card?
If so how are you accomplishing this?
I am returning a M4400 and planning on ordering an 8530w but the M4400 has 2 DVI ports on the docking station and I see that the HP docking stations do not... -

Hey guys want to bump thread for some feedback?
I am a new owner of a 8530w, and it is really slick - I bought from a highly reputed seller on Ebay and saved a lot of money vs buying from my school.
However there are these two cracks and a dent. The seller admits he could have missed them, or it it was a result of shipping/customs manhandling.
What reparation do you think is in fair, were you in my shoes?
Also 3 yr warranty will repair this no sweat, right? I plan to contact them anyway but don't have time atm. Any HP service experiences welcome
Thank you ;] -
If I were you I'd be sending it back for a full refund. I just got one myself off eBay for UDS995, (T9400, 4GB, FX770) brand new in sealed box. How much did you pay?
On your one it needs at least a new bottom cover, that is a couple of hundered dollars and about an hours work. But that part has the service tag on it, so I'm not sure what happens when you don't have the service tag on your replacement part. Anyway, send it back, you don't want it. -
I bought from this seller, who did you buy from? paid $1409 to Canada, which is really steep compared to your price.
Here I took snaps of how it was wrapped, think it's because of customs?
Thanks for reply
Edit: Not that I don't take what stumo says seriously, but any other opinions?
edit2: the warranty check out? see at the bottom "out of warranty"
-
I got more or less the same damage displayed on your first pic when I dropped mine from a meter height... This is how I discovered HP hardened laptops haha.
Seriously, as highlighted by stumo, this lappy received shocks, but we don't know whether it comes from the handling or the previous owner himself. Did you check if the pack has any sort of tear or damage? -
The box was in rough shape if thats what you mean; one side was semi-squashed a little torn on one corner, so there was room for the 'book to slide around.
I'm torn, as it works perfectly and has a few better features over the one from school and saved me $400.
I believe the seller honestly did not know or it was pristine at the time, he has been very helpful as well as having 100% feedback [checked with Toolhaus.org].
If he did not know, damage could occurred prior via his supplier[?].
Appreciate your inputs though, your pov's help, thanks. -
But let me give you some more advice, since I have rebuilt a few of these laptops...
1. I don't think it is worth getting a discount with that level of damage. You WILL have to replace the base enclosure, since it is the actual chassis of the laptop on these, those cracks are not superficial and they will only get worse. That whole front corner of the laptop (corner with the HDD in it) will be held on only by the thin plastic/metal top cover after a month or so of use if you keep it as is. As said before, I don't know what happens when you replace the base enclosure, since that is the part that carries the service tag for the warranty. I hope someone can enlighten us?
2. I think when it says out of warranty it means the initial setup part, but I could be wrong.
3. Assuming you paid by paypal, it really doesn't matter when/where the damage occured. The item is not as described, period. It is the sellers problem to recover their losses from whoever did the damage.
4. Send it back for a full refund. There are plenty of these laptops around and they will only get cheaper. -
Oh, and don't fall for their return policy either. the only thing you HAVE to pay for is return shipping, even then, a truly genuine good seller would refund you the return shipping too in this case, since they are totally at fault by sending an item that is not as described.
-
isn't this laptop body made of metal? I wonder if a little/light bump could've caused it. I've heard this laptop was built like a tank
-
I'd say to cause those cracks in the magnesium base enclosure would have taken a decent drop onto concrete at the right/wrong place. -
Stumo, I was about to say I think you misinterpret the photo but I just took a second to unscrew the hard drive cover and the hairline crack is so much worse than I thought.
It peculiar though because there is no other sign of this trauma besides those pictured.
Yeah, I do want it refunded or exchanged now. Oh and I haven't fallen for the return policy, its not a factor. As you said, item was not as described. -

I've had my 8530p for 9 months, in daily use and commuting to and from work in the car, with a lot of database work that hammers the CPU and hard disks. I also travel around a fair bit on trains for work. The chassis doesn't even have a scratch despite all this travelling, so the build quality is pretty impressive. But I am quite careful with it.
I have experienced the same 'problems' as others, specifically with:
- the dim screen, which isn't so dim that it's unusable, but in a dark hotel room it gets a bit annoying as the auto-adjust is too dark for my liking. I'm sure it's better for my eyes though so I don't mind so much. Unfortunately I don't seem able to switch off the sensor nor adjust brightness as it's a work laptop and they've disabled almost all admin settings. (Any suggestions for circumvention? The obvious one is to just install a new copy of XP for personal use, as they haven't prevented booting from a DVD!)
- buggy touch buttons when coming out of standby sometimes, only a restart seems to fix this
- battery no longer snug. (It was snug until I removed it when I upgraded the memory.)
Other random problems:
- I've installed in a 2GB memory stick but only have 3GB total. Not sure what the problem is there but I don't want to send it to our IT dept for a week just to find out it can't be resolved.
- I sometimes catch the keys on the up-stroke when I type too quickly, and the GHB thumb stick just gets in my way, but it's a minor quibble.
- it's SO heavy it's untrue. The power supply is half the problem as it's huge. And 130W ouput???? Goodness me. I wonder how on earth the battery lasts so long!! My record is 4 hours listening to Winamp in the car from a USB stick (i.e. no hard disk activity).
All in all I really like this laptop. I've no other laptops to compare it to at the same price point, but it's certainly very solid, and going back to a cheaper laptop reminds me just how well this unit is built. It's very capable for my needs, and CPU fan only ever spins up when I'm balls deep in database extraction so it must be pretty good. However, having come from a dual 3.4GHz desktop machine I do miss the extra CPU grunt that offered. -

-
That sux. They have changed the battery for this series, the previous battery was great and was used for 3 generations.
[/QUOTE]
Its true, I had battery wobble the day I got it and I fixed it with some duct tape. My older HP business notebook had stronger catches to lock the battery in place. The new Elitebooks have very fragile looking battery hooks!
Try going to HP System Information (just type it in the vista Start search box). Under RAM installed, it should show the proper number(4096MB) , but if System Memory is still at 3GB, it's definitely a 32bit OS limitation.
-
HP came to fix it with a new base, but the new base was just as bad (tried before swawpping) so we just used some tape and plastic to give the catch less clearance. It is a stupid design.
Interestingly, you can see on the battery there is an extra slot (next to the catch that is loose), nothing uses that slot, but I assume the 8730w does have an extra attaching point there.

DIMMING PROBLEM!!!!
I've had the 8530p for about 10 months and have had no problems with it until lately. For about the last month the screen has started to dim to about 40% (seems to be about as bright as the default dim on battery). It does this whether on AC or battery and I have all the dimming choices off. I also have the ambient light sensor off in BIOS.
The wierd thing is that I found out the if I press the bottom portion of the screen bezel (like where the ambient light sensor is located) it will brighten up to full brightness but then dim back down when I let go. Sometimes I can do this a few times and it will stay bright, and sometimes not.
Also, just as I am writing this the screen was dim and the spontaneously got bright for about two seconds then dimmed again.
I've tested this with Windows XP and Ubuntu and it does it on both...it even does it on the HP start up screen.
Any ideas or similar complaints?
Thanks

Any advice/tips for a new owner? I won't get it by Saturday at the earliest... gonna be a long wait.
-
Thanks Zyber...
I was on the HP online service center chat last night and he had me install a few updates and such and the problem continues so I'll be sending it in for repair under warranty. I hope it does not take to long.
Anyone know who I would contact to see if I can pay for an upgraded LED screen?
Thanks

Next up is video drivers but trying to justify to the IT department that I need an upgrade to that is probably a long shot
I've already used the wifi excuse to get the above updated!
I think I'll stick some gaffa tape under the battery to stop it wobbling, a classic roadie fix!
I've also disabled the screen dimming. Display looks much better now.
AND I've bought the 90W adapter, and the 12V car adapter, they're both TINY!! Great stuff.
Also removed the cap from the joystick and now have no typing problems either
Cheers all!
