laptop batteries all have smart ic chips in them. they scan and log hundreds of points every minute- from voltages and currents in and out, heat and other things. if at any point, ANY parameter goes outside of the set limit, the ic chip can self-destruct itself and render the entire battery pack useless.

remember the laptop battery fires back in the 90's? you dont see them anymore because all batteries now have these smart monitoring systems built into them. so even if your battery is fully charged, it may not work.

Hi 'NecessaryEvil', I am following up an upgrade for a 8770w to install a 3rd drive in the optical bay by swapping the caddy to a HDD caddy. I saw that you had looked at the spare parts needed for this and concluded they are: (I take one of them is the caddy itself while the other is a the optical bay frame?)

This doesn't sound like a software problem. It's most probably faulty hardware.

    Sorry for the bad news.

    Hi guys.
    I'm not a 8560w owner, but I found a good bargain on a used one. A HP EliteBook 8560w-LG660EA with i5 2540M, 8gb of ram and AMD FirePro M5950.
The things I'd like to know are:
    • can the cpu be upgraded with a 3rd gen i7 or you can only upgraded with cpu listed in Spare Parts from HP ?
    • can I change (without any problem) the AMD video card with a
NVIDIA Quadro 1000M graphics card 652673-001
      or
NVIDIA Quadro 2000M graphics card 652674-001?

Maybe for the video card is better the 1000M model so I won't need a differente heatsink.

    Thank you very much

No you cannot use a newer gen CPU, the chipset doesn't support it.
Yes you can change the GPU but changing it to the quadro 1000 would be a downgrade and the 2000 would be a sidegrade (its faster in certain tasks but slower in other) plus the cost of buying a new GPU is too high for changing to be reasonable.
I would say that the best upgrade is an SSD so look into that...you get more for your money and more battery time.

I forgot to mention...i doubt it's possible to upgrade to an i7 quad core CPU sinc the motherboad for quads is different.

thank u for the quick reply.
yes, I already own a Samsung SSD. Is its mainboard SATA III compliant?
I wanted an Nvidia GPU to try osX on this machine. GPU on ebay have good prices.
The question is wheter u can sell the AMD video card easily or not.

DO you think it's still a bargain for 400€ ?
specs are good but it's out of warranty. (plus I noticed it's heavy :( )

Upgrading from i5 to i7 might be possible, main difference is that i5 boards have only two memory slots. There could also be differences with heatsinks, power circuits, stuff like that. I don't remember seeing anyone here NBR trying that yet.

_If_ my 8650w had i5 and I had an i7 around I'd certainly try it... just for fun. But it already has i7 and downgrade to i5 has also been tested already :)

GPU should be a drop-in replacement, again different heatsink might be required. I recommend that you would check out Service manual for parts first. That AMD card can do 5 displays at once, while nVidia can only two.

wow... 5 monitors (I own only 2 monitors lol). I guess it's better to keep it like it is.
do you think it's a bargain an 8560w with these specs:
    HP EliteBook 8560w-LG660EA
    8g ram
    Intel Core i5 2540M
    AMD FirePro M5950 1024 MB

    for 400€ (without warranty)

I think this review is the exact same model Review HP EliteBook 8560w-LG660EA Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews Prices differ around the world a lot but that 400e seems like an average price. Not the cheapest possible but also far less than the most expensive ones :)

Also the board is sata3 compatible, so you'll get nice speeds with an SSD. I have 250GB Samsung 840 in mine.

At least I can't find it mentioned in the specs (except in this sentence: "The DisplayPort is also designed to be a space saving tool that can still deliver high resolution digital display, digital audio, and bi-directional communications.") So my guess is there is no other digital audio output.

Does it even work? Shutdown the laptop, take primary battery out and leave only secondary. Can you boot the laptop, if you can is it then visible?

Sometimes batteries do not show as two separate but as one. You'll only notice added capacity.

Or if your laptop does not even boot, the battery could be dead.

Yes but does it work on your laptop alone? If not, then the issue could be your laptop's external battery connector.

    i've done some another tests:

    1. I removed the laptop principal battery
    2. I connected the second battery
    3. I've put the laptop in a docking stations
    4 power on the laptop
    5 remove from docking

after this the laptop was still running on the second battery, but in the power management was still not present.

Sounds like the external battery connector on laptop could be damaged. Nothing visible like bent pins or corrosion?

Unless that connector is on a separate board motherboard would need to be replaced.

there is no corrosion or bent pins...
The strange thing is that the battery works when I remove the laptop from docking station but I need to charge it with another laptop

    Hi All,

Been looking through the forum and this thread but couldn't find a real answer.

I just received my refurb 8560w 2 days ago, and it won't power on today.

Only the power led (lightning bolt) is flashing white/red when the AC adapter is connected.
I don't have a battery that I can place as I still have to order that.

But it won't do anything except have that light blinking.

I already removed the cell battery as I thought it might be a BIOS problem and then tried powering it on with AC adapter, to no effect.

I Also measured through the power adapter (120W) and measured 19.5V on the inner sleeve, and 16.1V on the center pin, which I don't know if that might be the problem.

I already contacted the seller, and HP support as it still is under warranty, but as I live in the Netherlands, and is bought in the US I don't like to have it shipped back-forth again (still have to receive an answer from both).

If anyone can enlighten me, much appreciated.

I registered the 8560w at the dutch HP site, but was transfered to the US support site where I could place the service request as wel as select the Netherlands as country of product location. I received a confirmation from the Dutch support, so it's linked somehow, so I hope Dutch support will reply to me.
Still have 60 days warranty from the seller, but as said, would hate to have it shipped back/forth.

But getting back on the issue, anyone know the white/red lightning bolt blink indication?

Well, I'm happy at the moment, and very pleased with HP service.
They called me just yet, informing me that they will pick up the unit tomorrow with their courier and repair will take 5-12 workdays.

    All under warranty.

I see some of 8570w on eBay within range of prices like $850-$950.
    Here is one of examples: HP EliteBook 8570W 15 6" 750 GB Intel Core i7 3rd Gen 2 7 GHz 16GB | eBay
Based on the warranty end date, that machine should have been manufactured back to Oct-2013.
Is there anything wrong with those machines?
It seems people bought them for about $2.5K, why they are selling them just for $850-950?

    Thanks.

Ok, so it appears I have a broken AC Adapter and is exchanged by HP.
The workstation is back on its way to me.
Now I want to buy a battery, but I see different voltages that are offered on ebay supposed to be compatible with it, 10.8 and 14.4 V.
    So are both voltages compatible?

Ok, so the returned unit failed again after the first reboot. Same error message again, power led red/white blinking. Phoned HP and they replaced the Mobo today.
The replaced Mobo was locked (something which BIOS or something) but perfectly workinh, but the engineer will return tomorrow to have the Mobo once again replaced with a new one. Pffff...

Following up myself on this one. I've never had time to publish results, but two SSDs in RAID 0 setup work in the HP 8560W and we get improved performance over one single SSD. One drive sits in the bay and the other in the standard HD area,

The system is setup with two old Corsair Neutron GTX 240GB, and here are the resulsts:

Not as good as what I get from the 8570w with two Samsung Pro, but it is really decent for an "old" machine. Since there are now cheap small SSD on the market, you can potentially use this method to get a single drive from the two disks and improve the overall performance of the laptop.

    Cheers

I recently noticed a big design flaw. The slot for the express card won't let me place the express cards because of the housing that's sloped inwards. The express cards won't connect entirely. As the length is reduced because of the housing slope :S

Has anyone succesfully upgraded from a 900p display to 1080p? More specifically was your 900p a Samsung ltn156kt02-301? Did you notice if some of the 40 pins were not connected?

Has anyone upgraded their GPU to something newer? Such as Firepro from 8570w?
I'd like having three monitor support but current Quadro 2000M supports only two outputs.
If I'm going to replace the GPU, I'd rather put in something beefier than FirePro M5950.

900p and 1080p should use same cable.

Yes the cable should be the same, I'm just going to try it to see what happens.
You cant upgrade the GPU AFAIK, because the VGA bios of the M5950 is integrated into the system bios, meaning an upgrade will brick the system. I could be wrong though.

That should not be a problem at all. Just see the service manual for part numbers for GPU (to get correct 2000m) and perhaps heatsink.

    Hey all-new to the forum.
I got an issue last night that my laptop thinks is a bad graphics controller (4 blinks diag code). Powering on wouldn't even show the hp splash.
I pulled out the hdd to try in an old laptop I had and got the same issue. I got suspicious and used the hdd from said old laptop and it booted past bios and would then BSOD immediately. I am pretty sure this is just because of the working hdd going from a core 2 duo into the I5.
My failed drive is running 8.1 and my 8560 has 8GB ram.
I'm curious as to why the motherboard is showing a bad graphics controller when it is clearly the hdd itself. Could the drivers have gotten that corrupt that badly/that quickly?
Think there's a way to roll back the drivers on the affected hdd?
Background: I came home for lunch and it worked fine. I left it turned on (closed the lid) and came home and it wouldn't wake up from sleep.

That's certainly good to hear. I have seen a few reports of folks upgrading to the 2000m only to have funky scrambled green lines appear on the screen after boot. Is this only a problem for those upgrading from the FirePro or will I have to do anything with the BIOS or VBIOS? Your insights are definitely appreciated.

These machines should all work with either Quadro 1000m, 2000m or FirePro 5950 cards. If I remember right at least service manual does not make difference between motherboards/GPUs but heatsinks for them were different. Trying to use GPU from 8570w or another brand may cause unpredictable results.

It's hard to say what would cause those lines, especially if there has been several cases. They _should_ work :)

I will be ordering a 2000m (correct HP part) as well as the appropriate heat sink / fan assembly on Monday. I'm trying to max this thing out in the hopes of keeping it around for another year or so. It's by far the best notebook I have ever had.

    I know the feeling :)
Mine is i7, dreamcolor, 16GB ram, 3G, 250GB SSD and 750GB HDD. I actually replaced my desktop with it, I now use two 24" monitors with the advanced dock. I'd like to use that gorgeus internal display too but gpu supports only two outputs at once.

I might upgrade to 8570w at some point since it apparently has no whitelist, it would allow ac wlan and 4g wwan upgrades. Or 17" version to get another hdd slot and upgradeable graphics. Altough I'm not in a hurry, I already have one damn fine machine in my hands.

It sounds like mine is just like yours except for the Dreamcolor. My 8560w has 16gb (2x8gb), a 256gb 840 pro, 750gb HDD in the bay, and I just upgraded it from the 2720qm to a 2860qm (2720 went in the girlfriend's 8460p). I wish I had a Dreamcolor as that display makes me salivate. I just ordered the HP 2000m and heat sink and I'm hoping that the installation goes without a hitch. For the last little while, I have been drooling over the 8770w, but I cant afford it until they start popping up used at a fraction of the retail price. The Zbooks look cool too. Thanks for your help.

Hi all from a wet Cape Town! I am new to the forum, thanks for having me!

Just about read this whole thread and I am pretty satisfied that there were no major issues with this machine. Unfortunately I just had two laptops and a tablet stolen and so I have to replace them. I want to go business machine as I am a huge fan of the build quality and specs but cannot afford a brand new machine. The thing that has brought me this direction was one of the stolen laptops was an old HP Compaq 8510w and I was very impressed with this machine. I liked it so much more than the Dell Inspiron N5110 i7 that was stolen. Hence I am looking for the best of both worlds.

I have come across this on eBay, the seller says that it is a refurbished unit from HP Labs. What do you guys think? He will remove the 500GB HDD and fit a 256GB SSD for an extra $40 and add Win7 Pro for an extra $10.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Dylan
