OK, so I decided to go for regular FullHD version. Something is wrong with these DreamColor2 displays - every display has some kind of color casts (pink/blue/green), besides that white is not white, it is little yellow. Also because of the graininess (personally it does not bother me) the image is not that sharp, it is little blur, at least with some backgrounds. Another thing is that the display gets quite warm/hot at the top of the lid. So though the colors and angles are amazing, for my needs it won't be the best fit. I think HP/LG still needs to work and fix some things on DC2 displays.

Only Quads support 4 SODIMM slots, so dualcore motherboards have only two slots installed. That at least is the difference. While I'm not 100% certain but I believe you could install a quadcore on a dual motherboard. I have a feeling that someone did it on a 8560w but I'm too lazy to look for it in the owner's thread now :)

Heatsink for the quad core CPU has extra capper pipes to help the thermal.
You might want to check before changing from dual core to quad core CPU.

Colour cast - if there is any return the unit or calibrate the display properly.
It is a bit yellow if you compare it to standard LED backlit displays which have blue tinting.
Grain is because of anti-glare coating - like you said it's more visible of certain backgrounds (white/grey).
Pretty much all IPS screens are warmer than standard TN (AFAIK DC2 is using CCFL backlight).

However you are right - if you have no need or use for it it's a waste.

    Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade the hard drive in my 8570W and wondering if anyone knows if it is a 7.5mm or 9.0mm drive that I need to buy?

    Thanks

AFAIK standard is 9,5mm but you can also use the bigger 12,5mm. You can always take the drive out and measure it if you want to be sure.

When switching on my 8570w the screen often does not come on. It does happen from cold boot as well as standby. Although in the case of cold boot the screen always comes on after entering my BIOS password (blind of course).
For Win7 from standby it is very annoying because I have to send it right back into standby (via key combo of course). The second time it has always worked so far.
Sometimes it doesn't happen for 10 or so wakeups, and then it happens for 5 in a row. Mostly irregular und unpredictable. It's mostly standing on the desk with nothing changing between wakeups.
Its a dreamcolor display. Must be a BIOS problem, but they haven't issued any video-bios updates so far and the system bios is up to date.

I forgot to give you some update. As I wrote I exchanged the previous model with the ATI FirePro M4000 and regular FullHD version. The rest is the same and it is true that FirePro M4000 is faster than Quadro K2000M and at the same time it is 250-300$ less expensive. Windows Experience Index for the GPU increased from 6.9 to 7.1:

    CPU: 7.9
    RAM: 8.1
    GPU: 7.1
    HDD: 8.1

    fireprom4000_wei.jpg

At the same time I'm happy I got regular FullHD screen. Despite the colors and angles all the rest is better for me. The screen is more clear, sharper, it does not strain your eyes so much. It is also cold at the top of the lid. I'm only little disappointed with white color which is not white (similar to DC2 version), but little yellow. It is especially visible if you look at other screen, which is really white. But after few minutes you'll get used to it. Overall I'm very happy, though I experience some issues with Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 WiFi card (dropped packets). I expect to receive package from HP with new card on Monday.

If they use two different boards the answer is NO. Same as old questions from C2D days. Processor runs at full speed till OS loads drivers.Dual core board doesnt have extra power circuitry to light off 4 cores on startup.

I reckon you own a 8570w? I am thinking of buying one.

Is the BIOS as limited as 8530-series? Is there a way of overclocking it (I am fine with modding the hell out of it).

I've been comparing 8570w and M4700 and I'm leaning towards the former but why is it so hard to find a quad core i7, 1080p screen with FirePro M4000 for <£1500?

I can only find a dual core i5 model with FirePro M4000 for 1100 ish but from what I've read here, you can't replace the processor because the system uses 2 different board for dual core and quad core model. (or you can but you won't be able to use the 2 extra RAM slots, not sure which is the case.)

There's a model with quad core i7, 1080p screen and with Quadro K2000m for 1600~ but I don't want Quadro, I could replace the GPU but that increases the cost.

Dell is the only one that offers the config I want and it comes in just under £1400.

I live in the UK btw, if there's a way to get the specific 8570w I want (i7 quad core, 1080p, FirePro M4000), I'd love to know.

You might try ebay or cost central. A lot of ebay sellers ship overseas, from the US to the UK, for example. Good luck.

Not going to consider overseas shipping, looks like I'll have to either suck it up and go with i5 model or go for M4700.

I'm wondering if it is possible to build a Raid 0 volume connecting two sata3 ssd drive, the first as replacement of hard drive and the second attached by a caddy (dvd replaced).
    Thank you very much!

I don't have a 8570w (yet, ordered one today), so it's hard to provide you with a definitive answer.
That said, I saw some saying the caddy and hard drive are both connected to a 6Gb/s SATA III port. As the intel RAID controller can only have two SATA 6Gb/s, that's the best option for you to setup a RAID0 volume.

Then you need RAID to be activated in BIOS. Again I think it is ok since this model should have an mSATA drive (used as a cache) and that requires BIOS to have this option activated (RAID instead of AHCI). I have another HP model with an mSATA drive and RAID is activated although the configuration can't be seen in the very simple BIOS. I don't know if it's the same with the 8570W, but I guess so.

Once you have the two drives, you can activate the RAID0 volume using Intel Rapid Storage manager, or by entering the RAID BIOS (normally CTRL+I will let you enter the RAID BIOS) and manually creating the volume (all data are lost in this case).

On my other HP PC, I've never been able to have a working RAID0 volume between the mSATA and SSD drive, and I've never figured out why. You are not in the same case, so it might work for you.

Check you have access to the RAID BIOS, check you can activate or not RAID in the HP BIOS, those are first steps, I'd say.

I'll do the basic tests on mine when I get it.

    Cheers

I would be surprised if this works, but if yours has the 1080P screen rather than the 1600 x 900, I would consider to buy yours from you so you can get the other config.. I am not looking for IPS, just the higher resolution standard screen.

It's possible, as mine has a backlit KB. Check out the service and maintenance guide for the 8570w, you will find the part number.

BTW, I ordered a caddy for mine and I'll try to setup two SSD in RAID 0. I need to make sure, before the upgrade, that the caddy has the other SATA III connector. The mSATA one is SATA II, I used an intel 525 180gb for the testing and performance was limited to 3Gb/s.

I'll keep you posted on my further tests.

Hi, it works. The optical bay has a SATA III connector. Look at the results:

Once the RAID0 is setup, then the results are:

That makes a fast single big volume.

    Cheers.

How to use mSATA cache with two hard drives in RAID0 volume?

    Hello everyone,

I did some further RAID0 tests with the 8570w. Since RAID0 works and as the laptop offers a mSATA SSD slot, I was wondering if it would be possible to create a RAID0 volume with two standard hard drives (not SSD) and then use the Intel Smart Response Technology to accelerate this RAID0 volume with the mSATA SSD Cache.

To perform the test, I used two old hard drives, 250Gb 7200RPM extracted from two HP 8530w.

Creating the RAID0 volume was easy: simply activate CTRL+I in BIOS, save, restart, press CTRL+I at boot and setup raid volume (stripe 128k) using full space available. Then install Windows (Win 8.1 Beta in my case).

Once done I get a 500Gb volume. That's one of the benefits to go RAID0, since only half of the data go on each disk, it generates a volume of twice the size of each.

The performance of the volume is the following:

This shows the other advantage of RAID 0, the performance is theoretically doubled. In real life, it's not the case but improvements over one disk are clear. Again, I used old drives, modern ones offer much better performance so you can expect better than what's shown above.

With this setup, Windows boots in 31 secondes, which is decent. This is to be compared to the initial 46 secondes required with the 500Gb 7200RPM disk which came with my 8570w:

As I said before, and in light of the performance of this single disk, it would be interesting to test with two, but I did not have the opportunity.

How to cache the RAID0 volume?

The mSATA cache technology works with Intel Rapid Storage Technology tool to activate the Smart Response Technology. The principle is to use the mSATA SSD as a cache area for the standard disk (configurable in read only or read/write).

Again theoretically this would provide you with the performance of an SSD drive, while the disk behind a normal one.

To do this, you just need to install Rapid Storage Technology (RST) tool from Intel site. It will install the latest drivers for the RAID controller (iastor).

The reason why I was wondering if it would work is because Intel RST creates a RAID0 volume in the mSATA SSD to run the cache. So to me it sounded like a RAID0 of RAID0 in my case, which is kind of weird.

That said, it works, look the screenshots below:

Click on "Enable Accceleration" and then you access this screen where you can setup de size and type of acceleration:

Once done, the status shows the two disks in RAID 0 volume accelerated by the mSATA SSD drive as a RAID0 cache volume:

    Results

First of all, you might already know that the mSATA connector is limited to SATA II performance in the 8570w. The two SATA III connectors available with the QM77 chipset that comes with the 8570w are for the main disk bay and the optical bay.

Secondly, the mSATA drive I used for those tests is a low cost, low performance 32Gb SSD. The performance of this SSD alone (connected to a SATA III connector in a HP Envy 6) is the following:

The write performance is poor, but it's not a surprise for such a disk. In the 8570w, read performance are lower (max 250Mb/s) because of the SATA II limitation.

Now, as you saw, there are two ways to setup the acceleration:
    - Enhanced mode: that's read only cache, the SSD cache is used to store commonly accessed data (through an intelligent algorithm from Intel). The results are below:

You see we get SSD performance when it comes to read data from the cache, so that's pretty efficient. However, the read performance is lower than with the initial setting and I have no explanation. Maybe improvements can be found with fine tuning.

    - Maximized mode: that's the read/write cache and again the Intel driver will use an intelligent algorithm to read or write to the SSD disk instead of the standard disk. The results are below:

This time you see that we get full SSD performance of the mSATA drive. A better SSD drive would improve the situation of course (I did some tests with an Intel 525 180Gb in my HP Envy 6 and the write speeds goes up to 250Gb/s)

    Conclusion(s)

If you need a big disk space and don't have the budget for full SSD solution, this mSATA cache is a good alternative. You can potentially think using two 1.5Tb disks to create a huge 3Tb RAID0 disk accelerated by a fast mSATA SSD drive. This has no equivalent in SSD only solutions.

If your needs are not that extreme, then you will have to analyse on a case by case basis, depending on what you do with the PC and possibly the parts already available to you.

    Drawbacks:
    - Creating a RAID0 volume is risky, if one of the disks fails, everything is lost. Backup your data.
    - The additional RAID0 performance is useless if you use the mSATA SSD as a read/write cache because the real performance of the disk is hidden by the one of the SSD. You only keep the benefit of the bigger RAID 0 volume.
    - The write performance suffers from the cache system when it's only used as a read cache.
    - Using the mSATA SSD cache as read/write is risky since you can potentially loose data in the cache volume before it's written to the disk. Added to the RAID0 volume behind, it might be a lot of risks...

Note: if you go for an mSATA drive bigger than 64Gb (it is the maximum size of the cache allowed), the rest of the space will be made available by the Intel SRT as a RAID0 volume that you can format in disk manager to then use as an additional drive.

    Cheers.

    Hi There!

I just bought a 8570w with a 750GB Hybrid HDD (24gb ssd apparently) and I getting very disappointing drive benchmarks and I was hoping someone would test their one with the same utlity and let me know the results?

Here are mine which are completely blown away by the sata hdd in a 3.5 year old HP desktop, which is more than surprising!

Atto is the tool I use and the results are here:

I owned/own a similar notebook (HP with mSata, quad core i7 ivy bridge, etc) and here's the deal:

    - mSata port is 6Gbps

    - mSata port may be user populated by any mSata card you want - sata 2 or 3, 24gb or 256gb, it doesn't matter. it will work.

    - if mSata port is populated, the system will always try to boot from it first, even if you have the original 2.5" drive with an OS on it. Always.

    - the 2.5" slot is sata3

    - the optical drive, if you choose to buy an upgrade bay 2.5" to optical port adapter to add an additional drive, is sata 1. 1.5Mbps.

    - if you get a unit with 24gb mSata ssd and you want to get rid of the hidden partition, wipe the entire drive, or any drive in the machine, boot to gParted via USB

    - any user installed drives, mSata, 2.5", or opticals, will always show up correctly in device manager, or right click My Computer->Manage->Disk Management

    - i owned several mSata drives. my favorite, the fastest by far, is the Intel 525 90Gb. i have installed windows server 2008 r2 via usb3.0 flash drive and port, and been at the Administrator desktop in 3 minutes or less. this was on an hp envy 17t-3200 with i7-3610qm and 16gb ram.

    Nothing is wrong.

The system is using the 24gb mSata for HDD caching. One of the worst marketing ideas ever - use an incredibly fast drive to store commonly used data from the boot drive - a slow 2.5" hard drive. Nothing makes sense about that, except to the people trying to market mSata drives that are really small to people that can't wrap their head around going from a 1Tb primary hdd to a 60gb primary ssd.

Also, as much as I love HP, they are notorious for using very low spec drives to increase profit.

    Want speed? Do this:
    - Wipe the mSata and reformat, install Windows on it as the primary boot drive/OS. Only use the 2.5" for data storage. That's how it's supposed to be.

And before you ask about how you will make a drive that only gives you about 20gb of usable space a windows drive, this is how: set your virtual pagefile to 0gb, especially on ssd's. much smaller and faster OS, i can install windows 7, 8 or server 2008 r2 or 2012 and apps like visual studio and sql server and still be under 20gb with no page file. i have not had 1 issue removing page file.

try that, re-run your benchmarks, then reply with your results. i guarantee your scores will be through the roof compared to the first run.

    Hi There!

I am wondering if I should just remove BOTH drives and just install a 256GB Samsung SSD I have sitting on my desk?

Is that an option? Will it cause issues? (I understand from warranty perspective it's not ideal)

the tech probably forgot to plug the connector back in, lol. Happens to the best. HP ( business) support isn't that bad when compared to other companies out there. I've had worse experience with Dell and Lenovo. Luckily, I fix my stuff by myself nowadays and it works out pretty good. With dell, you can get the parts by mail, do the job, send the broken stuff back. With HP, they insist on sending you a technician with the parts, so you just tell him to stand aside and observe, or leave the part/s and go home.

I have an 8570w with a 90w dock, with the VGA and DVI ports. I am able to run the laptop display and the external VGA display in clone or in extended view.

I want to run two externals. I don't really care how it needs to be done, but I want to just put the laptop somewhere I don't even need to see it, and have two externals running off of it. I am open to buying a dock, daisy chaining DisplayPorts, whatever. Anybody know how I can do this?

Just use the Samsung SSD, I'm using it in my 8560w for quite some time with no issues. And AFAIK you won't void warranty if you only swap the drive.

Should I remove the 24GB SSD cache drive too?

If you want to you can...not much point in a cache SSD if you have an SSD as the main drive.

We have 3 new HP Elitebook 8570w notebooks that are well equipped (i7 CPU,
8GB RAM, large HDD) at our office and ALL THREE are having problems locking up -
hangs - freezes using Windows 8 Professional OS.

Troubleshooting: We've scanned for viruses, installed Windows Updates, found
no pgms or services taking too much CPU or RAM, etc.

I've turned OFF Windows Search utility which helps a little .. but now
Outlook searches are VERY slow. I've increased the Windows SWAP file to 3 times
RAM (24GB) .. but system still hangs and runs very slow.

ANY SUGGESTIONS to fix this issue will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

Install the latest BIOS version from HP.com. I'd also check if the systems were recently upgraded with a third party RAM/HDD from the same supplier. Incompatible/bad ram sticks could cause freezes. Also check the event viewer for errors that occur during the time freezes. Hopefully this will give you some leads.

Does anyone know if the 8570w has the same screen that the 8560w does? Namely, the LP156WF3-SLB1 LP156WF3-SLB2 or LP156WF3-SLB3?

I saw that this is a 10-bit screen, which is extremely rare for a laptop. The macbook pro retina is only an 8-bit.

If it is, in fact, a 10-bit screen, can anyone comment on how they like it?

    Thanks!

Edit: After reading through a lot of the posts here, it seems that you Can get a "dreamcolor" display which is 10-bit. So now my question is: do you have to specifically ask for that? Are you guaranteed Dreamcolor 2 (vs. dreamcolor 1 or "hd display")?

Edit2: One final question: how does this display match up to the Macbook Pro Retina? There's a huge thread on eye strain over on the mac forum ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/7937338#7937338) and I'm one of the people that has had this life-altering (had to quit work) eye strain. This is why I'm looking into the 8570w. Could anyone take a video of their 8570w screen and send it here? I would be so immensely grateful to see the screen at multiple distances to see how much of an issue dithering/pwm (flickering) is.

I am trying to run Windows Server 2012 Data Center on my 8750w... predictably having trouble getting some drivers, including the network drivers, etc. Anyone know where I can get drivers that will work on 2012 server? HP only lists drivers for Win 7 and 8

I'm looking for the K2000m vbios of the 8570W, can anyone upload a copy of it for me?
Can be dumped with one click in GPU-Z.

Server 2012 is essentially windows 8 so try those and see....If the ethernet card is from Intel try downloading the driver directly from Intel.

    Hi to all,

at first-sorry for my bad english but i hope you can understand my problems...

I bought a 8570W and now i try to install it with Windows 8 and i try to use the Caching Msata drive but i doesnt work. I cant see the "Accelerate" section after the Installation and so i cant active it.
I can see the msata drive as "normal" drive in the Explorer from Win and i can use it as normal disk...but this is not what i want to do

So-can anybody how use this Notebook and work with Caching modul told me the Setup from the BIOS Options?
Here http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/co...na-c03481730&dtd=default&locale=de&details=no i can read that i should have a entry "Intel Rapid Start Technology" but i did not have this entry in my Bios so i am a Little bit confused..

    Thanks

    Hi

I have a 8570w with a Startech USB 3.0 gigabit ethernet adapter. (need 2 ethernet connections)

The problem is that this device driver doesnt load until after Windows login, and sometimes not even after that.

Anyone have a clue how to solve this?

If I pull out the device in put it in again everything works....

8570w can only take nVidia K1000m, K2000m and AMD FirePro M4000
Because it only has a half height MXM slot.
