lol it makes me laugh, the F.21 bios just changes the temp thresholds for the fans. if you have an nvidia GPU you'll get this regardless of any 'bios fix', it's been this way for years.

Firewire chipset is not from TI, as I remember correctly its from jMicron and it is connected over pci-e so it's a rather new controller type. To me that worked fine with a Terratex X24FW soundcard.
Performance with Ableton is as you would expect it. To be honest I was a little bit disappointed, my home workstation with a i3-2100, 8GB RAM, and OCZ agility 3 provides a "faster" experience.
But nevertheless, I would buy that notebook again, its build quality is just fantastic, great keyboard, great touchpad and trackpoint. Great screen too (non-DC FHD). I was extremely surprised how good the internal soundcard is, very silent and with ample power to drive even my AKG K271 / K400.

Can someone tell me what is the black cover of the primary disk? I have an 256 ssd disk on the HP 8760w LG673EA. The black cover on the hard disk has a plug and looks like a card.
I removed the 256 ssd hard disk from the primary bay and put it in the secondary bay. It fits O.K., but it can not take a black cover like in the primary bay. However, there is no the clip positions for such cover, which means that it is not necessary. Therefore, it is possible to put a second ssd hard disk in the secondary bay. I do not see where is the problem to add a secondary SSD like it was mentioned before.
Please let me know if someone tried to put a second SSD without beeing obliged to cut a plastic like it was shown in a previous thread.
    Thank you.

BTW, does your LG673EA come with a bracket for the hard drive in the secondary bay?

If you have not ordered a secondary HDD there will be no bracket. Anyway, I chose to remove the bracket from my primary SSD, fixed the very light SSD just with double-sided foam tape and used the bracket to install a rotary disk HDD in the second bay. I don't see why I should spend about €20 to get that piece of metal.

yeah, 20 Euro to get the bracket is really a rip off, hard to get too

Why HP changed the bracket? you can find it cheaper for the 8740w generation and the bracket seems not that different...

Well, I'm not sure if there is any difference between the hdd brackets 8x40w vs. 8x60w...
Btw - the heatsink-modules for the mxm graphics should work on all nVidia Cards, i.e. would the heatsink from the 5010m work on a 3000m too? Might not improve things by much but anyhow... I'm able to overclock the 3000m to 750/1500, memory also to 1500 but - it get's hot and noisy then....

There is. 8760w has a new type (and indeed, the LG763EA doesn't have it included).

I want to buy 8760w (LG671EA) with OCZ Vertex 3. Could anybody tell me if it will work properly ? What is the transfer rate in benchmark ATTO ?

OCZ Vertex 3 is a SF2281 with MLC synchron (25nm)

you could compare it to my extremememory XLR8 Express with SF2281 and 25nm sync

"throttled" compared to desktop based systems, most likely C-States.

I got 28% (see posting #16 on page 2 in this topic) by using HP's online chat. Later, when they delayed the shipment a few times, I got another 10% on top of this through an HP Case Manager as compensation for the delays.

I have finished my new machine setup and determined that Intel turbo boost is not working. Under no circumstances, cores will go over 2.2 GHz. Checked this with HWiNFO and Intel turbo boost technology monitor. For test case I have used Cinebench R10 64 Bit. Single thread result is 3679 points while it should be around 4700.
HWiNFO reports Intel Turbo Boost Technology as Supported, Enabled. Notebook bios is latest F.21 and there is no option related to Turbo Boost configuration. SpeedStep is enabled and working.
    Notebook configuration is: HP 8760W (LY534EA), FHD, i7-2670QM, 16GB DDR3, SSD Samsung 830 256GB, HDD 500 GB, AMD FirePro M5950, Intel N6205, Windows 7 Pro 64
Windows install was done from the supplied OS recovery DVD and I wonder if this has something to do with the problem. Intel chipset drivers are installed and in the device manager there are no unrecognized devices.
Can anyone shed some light or check at his notebook?

    Thanks,
    Boris

no problem here with an i7-2760. Will go up straight to 4x3.2GHz and that for at least up to 40 minutes - as long as I have tested it. Temperatures were about 75°C, Graphics (3000m) not stressed.
check in windows energy settings that cpu is up to 100%, otherwise I have no glue...

Hello, I just ordered my 8760w and expect it the first Week in 2012 and I want to add a SSD.

Does anybody know whether the 8760w supports a 512 GB M4 SSD from Crucial?

Crucial says Yes: Upgrades for HP - Compaq EliteBook 8760w Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com

However in the 8760w manual they only talk about 128 and 256 GB SSD's.

And where do I get the right caddy bracket for it which fits for sure in the primary or secondary hardware bay from 8760w? Or comes it already with the caddy bracket for the second hardware bay? Or just I don't need it?

See last postings. If you've ordered your 8760w with just one drive you don't have the second bracket. I've fixed the SSD in the primary bay with some foam-double-sided tape and used the bracket to install a HDD. The Samsung SSD is very light so I don't expect that fix to fail.

Show me one Notebook with an integrated CompactFlash Reader!
SmartCards are extensively used in company's...
And we don't need to talk about SD-Cards.
Btw, there are Expresscard CompactFlash Readers like this one:

My HP Elitebook 8710W has an integrated PCMCIA slot that works with a Compact Flash adapter very nicely and completely swallows the card inside the case where it can't get snapped off. See note below on what I have now learned about Express Card adapters that I previosly did not know until Blomquist pointed it out.

    To Blomquist;

Thanks for the pointer on the Express Card adapter. I have one on order already. Ironically I had Googled for such a device and read an article that said there were none due to a 128 Mb limit on memory. It clearly was an erroneous and dated article as I have now found many models including Sandisk and Belkin among others. Belkin have assured me that theirs has no problems with 32 and 64 Gb Compact Flash cards. This is a much better solution than an external card reader, except for what appears to be a protruding card vs. my previous adapter in my HP 8710W Elitebook that completely swallowed the card inside of the laptop's case.

I have since bought the Belkin Expresscard 54 Adapter for a Compact Flash card and it works well and is faster than my older PCMCIA slot on the 8710W. However the CF card sticks out far enough to NOT be left in for fear of damage when the 8760W is being moved around. So it gets put in and removed before undocking. My older 8710W used to completely swallow the CF card which was a nice safety feature!!

I have a slight problem. I wrote a HD video with my camera, and when I run it in my HP 8760w LG673EA (2620, Quadro 3000, simple display) it makes rarely a lag in a frame and in the sound. Did you have the same problem? When I run the same video in another computer with a lower resolution screen it runs fluently. Is there something I can do to fix it?
    Thank you.

Just got my Elitebook today and apparently I had a bad bios flash. After flashing to the newest bios (21 I believe), the system won't power on. The bios was flashed and verified, but after shutting itself down, it has not been able to power back up again. When I plug in the AC adapter, the battery LED cycles through blue and amber colors. It won't respond to the power button or any other input. Any ideas?

Be careful do not install the connection manager from HP support assistant, it blocks instantly the play of any video file no matter it is HD or not. It took me a weekend to resolve the problem.

I have a problem and will probably have to send my 8760a to HP service. External speakers stopped working, the headphone and microphone jacks work, but speakers or built in mic don't. Tried reinstalling the drivers, reflashed the bios, but the problem exists in HP quickWeb also, so it's probably hardware. Disappointed... If anybody has any advice/ideas, I'm all ears :)

Yesterday, I was working all day (installing software) on my LG 673EA and the processor reached 73 degrees celcius and the screen froze and then a blue screen appeared and restarted. Unfortunately, the adjustment of the CPU temperature and fan speed is not the best from the latest bios. Is there a way to control the fan speed? I could not manage to do it with HWINFO.
    Thank you.

I would NOT recommend a micron-based SSD. I have both a C300 256GB and two OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SSDs in RAID1 (Yes even though it's solid state, I've had a C300 fail) and frankly the C300 caused many, many issues, whereas the OCZ resolved all of it.

There's a problem with the Crucial SSD firmare. It causes system lock-up for up to 2 minutes after which it just returns to a normal operational state. It does this completely randomly, and Crucial support isn't helpful in trying to resolve the issue. Registry hacks to change power management did not resolve it for me, and the M4 (if you read through the crucial community forums) also suffers from this issue.

Surely someone mentioned it before, but just in case you have to cut away a piece of plastic in the second drive bay in order to get drives into it. It voids HP warranty.

Does anyone here have a Europe-ordered 8760w with a UK Backlit keyboard? It seems it's impossible to have it ordered. I have spoken to our B2B Account manager and several other of the B2B "specialists" but it seems nobody can order the part as per the replacement part manual. I'm starting to question as to whether HP even produces these...

You can't control the fan using HWINFO, I already been in contact with the developer and gave him all the details HP could provide me, no luck...I use a fancontrol for thinkpads to avoid the fan going crazy...

this might be interesting for those of you guys having the Firepro m5950 installed in their 8560w / 8760w or the m3900 in the 8460w.

Since HP has not updated the graphics driver for the Firepro m5950 for a while now, i was searching for an updated driver over at AMD/ATI. I reckoned that Ati might have a newer driver with the proper installation routines for the m5950. While i was searching over at ATi i found a new driver - version 8.85.7.3 / officially released on 19/12/2011 :

you can find the driver for win7 ( 32 and 64 bit ) here :
    AMD FirePro? Mobile Driver

    supported are m3900 and the m5950 in the 8460w / 8560w / 8760w

I looked through that document already. Those codes only consider systems that startup and flash error codes through the Caps Lock and Num Lock LEDs. My system doesn't even turn on. Furthermore, that document does not mention the battery LED alternating from blue to amber.

My thoughts: This is a serious error that cannot be recovered unless I remove the bios and reflash it manually OR replace the system board. Alternatively, I've never had a battery, I've only used AC power since I've had it...maybe there is an issue with the bios update that needs the battery?? It is the battery LED that is flashing after all...

If anybody has any information regarding the bios chip (where is it located on the system board, is it soldered or removable, are there any motherboard headers to flash the bios without removal) OR if I need to install a battery to resolve the blue-amber battery LED issue, please let me know! Thanks!

My HP LP3065 30" LCD Monitor has been intermittent with my new HP 8760W and it's 230W Advanced Docking station. I use an HP NR078AA Adapter to convert the Displayport to a Dual Link Output. The problem is the same whether I use the docking station's displayport or the Laptop's Displayport. I am using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and have the latest video drivers according to HP's web site.

When I first dock the 8760W into the Advanced Docking station the HP LP3065 30" display will not show an image. I learned on another chat group that by unplugging the USB power supply cable for the NR078AA adapter it will then wake up the monitor. This usually results in about 10 seconds of proper image on the monitor and then it goes out again. A 2nd or 3rd momentary removal of the Adapter's USB cable will usually fix the problem and then it runs perfectly for the rest of the day. The image is flawless and stable after that, but this constant need upon first docking to "reboot" the adapter with the unplugging of it's USB cable seems primitive and is a temporary fix at best. Talking to HP's Indian tech support team has shown that they have no experience with this issue or even the products involved. So far they have sent me the wrong docking station (120W model) to try out and now I am awaiting a new NR078AA adapter to come. They are clearly guessing as they have no direct experience or tech support articles on this issue.

I have now received a replacement NR078AA adapter and so far it behaves fundamentally the same, just different timing before it turns off and/or turns back on. It still requires from 1 to 3 momentary "USB power cable reboots" before the monitor settles down and then works exceptionally well!!

This adapter seems to be widely available on many web sites leading me to believe there are a lot of users for such a rare item. This adapter capability used to be built into my 5 year old HP Advanced docking station that I used very successfully with my 8710W and the same 30" HP display, so it has been a source of great frustration to have to use such a very messy and expensive external device that has proven to be very unreliable upon first docking.

Numerous Apple threads on their very similar adapter mention that it has also been flaky for Apple users on large Dual Link monitors. Apparently Apple went through 3 BIOS updates for their adapter to maybe get it to settle down.

By the way, no amount of playing with the "Detect" and "Identify" buttons in the Screen Resolution Control Panel will wake up the 30" display connected via the adapter. Only momentary unplugging of the NR078AA's USB cable will activate the display.

Does anyone else have this same problem?

So with Dell now offering the IPS RGB-LED panel on the Precision M6600, is there still a compelling reason to get the HP 8760w? Reason I'm asking is because I'm looking for a replacement to my 8730w and I can get either the Dell or the HP around the same price configured (the HP tends to be more expensive typically). The 8760w doesn't have Optimus support nor SATA III, but the Dell has both.

just for info: the 8760w does have SATA III, as lots of people on this thread have confirmed.

If you are going for the dell with the IPS Panel you won´t be able to use optimus. The Intel HD Graphics 3000 simply does not support 10 displays, so you won´t have both energy-saving graphics option + IPS-Screen.

And I just found out about this too. Thanks for the info. It does look like the 8760w isn't such a poor option after all.

Does anyone knows if we can use optimus technology in our HP 8760w with Quadro 3000 card and the simple screen?

No unlike Dell, HP has not enabled this tech in this round of laptops for its quadro based Elitebooks.

I tried to make a video by using adobe premiere elements 10. Surprisingly the temperature of the CPU reached 87 degrees and increasing and of GPU 55. Fortunately I had installed tpfan and when I activated it it during the rendering the CPU temperature droped to 79 and stayed there and of GPU to 43. I would rather hear the noise of the fan when I do something like this than not hearing the fan and have 90 degrees. The new bios has something wrong with temperatures.

it seems the temperature table was adjusted because there were too many complaints about the fan noise. How ironic eh.

There is no optimus on the 8760w because of the fact HP offers 10bit displays. Until Intel get off their backsides and realise more people are using 10bit, they won't be compatible. it was easier to keep optimus disabled than it was to try to tell users its going to be disabled because of the 10bit oversight by the integrated graphics solution on the 2xxx processors.

I think they just wanted less hassle by people going 'well this guy has it enabled, but why can't I on a DreamColor display? Disable for all = less support time and people getting irate.

The fan temp threshold table is different in the new bios, i'm not sure why this has occurred, nor why it has suddenly allowed systems to hit 80+ C in render situations.
