Hiya safari, sorry i haven't responded to you sooner.
Do you have a battery for this machine? The 87x0/85x0 series have a battery check option in the bios which ensures it's a proper battery and was the one that the system came with etc when it boots up. The battery sync check was supposed to have been relaxed a bit (it was for the 8740/8540) but it sounds like the system can't verify the battery on the power monitor circuit and is not initalising. you could however try a blind bios flash using a usb pen, uhm where did i put the settings... hang on.
Post on Blind Flash Recovery Replace the 68CAD with the correct bios for your machine in this case 68SAD. make sure the usb is placed in a USB2 slot, (the ones on the right hand side) by the optical bay, and that the usb is formatted to FAT.
Your machine may still blindflash if the battery light is coming on. check to see that the usb is being read when you press the power button. (it should flicker or such, so make sure you have a USB pen with a light!) This process can take up to 15 minutes, though, so be warned.
if however it does not, it'll have to be returned to hp.

Could some of you list the max battery times you have experienced with different CPU/GPU combos under various power settings? I really want to get the machine because of the dreamcolor display but I do travel every week on a plane. Without having to buy 2 laptops (one for travel and another for desk use) I would like to get an idea of how much battery life I can expect from this machine off the grid (and yes I realize you can get a sizeable bettery slice option).
My struggle is that when I am working at a cubicle -- I find the 1920x180p to be much better for screen real estate and at the hotel I want the power of a high end GPU. Alienware m17x is not an option because of the gamer bling and the Sagers because of the missing VGA out that I need for meetings. MSI has these things but I still dislike the chassis. So I am back to this (ridicoulsly expensive) option.
Thanks for your anecdotal info in advance. -

I have heard you can get 7 hours if you are just surfing (using WLAN) with the Dell M6600 (I guess not maximum brightness). All at maximum it is of course only 1 hour with the Dell. It depends also on the configuration, right, the tested Dell had an i7 2920XM and a M4000.
-
Yes, Dell claims 10hours for the M6600/4600 with Optimus. It's around 6 realistically.
-
How much battery life does the ultra battery slice add to the HP8760w? -
-
Also, can someone confirm whether the Ivy bridge chips will be socket compatible?
Would the power envelope be better enough to notice or does the 4000m/5010m power usage overwhlem any meaningful gain from a chip swap? -
I tried to order the backlight keyboard for Greece and they told me there is no possibility to get it. Then why they make a part number?
-
Hi guys, first post for me...
I love the industrial and elegant design of this notebook, but... Dell M6600 says to me: buy me, buy me...
On my future laptop I will use autodesk softwares like Revit, Autocad, 3dStudio Max, and some Adobe stuff like Lightroom.
Theres anybody like me?
Here in Italy informations on this notebook are very-very poor.

I was wondering if anybody is seeing the Quadro 4000M clocks bumping up and down during normal Windows usage. They're always jumping around on my 8760W (and during video play it bumps to full clocks).
Is this strange for these cards; I know the ATI cards stay at low clocks during normal usage. -
Totally normal, that's how Powermizer works. ATI cards also show erratic behaviour in certain cases. For example, the latest 6990M CF would go almost to the max when watching youtube.

Dreamcolor Display
Initially though i had a dead pixel but upon tapping it it dropped lower on the screen - is there a way to get rid of it or must i send the laptop in?
It seems to be behind the pixels somehow very weird! -
Normal behaviour, because youtube uses hardware acceleration now, (html5 is h264 -> VPU on graphics card, and Flash 10.2+ uses UMD/CUDA on graphics card).

- new Video card made no difference.
- new Motherboard made no difference.
- New CPU made no difference.
- 3rd new NR078AA video adapter made no difference.
- Changing the power settings to "Performance" made no difference.
- plugging the USB cable into a dedicated USB power adapter on a wall outlet made no difference.
- trying a 3rd new NR078AA video adapter made no difference.
- I have been saying the NR078AA is a faulty design and these tests are confirming that more and more.
- Now awaiting an HP ZR30W 30" display with a Displayport connector to eliminate the need for the faulty NR078AA adapter. -
is it possible to use a total of 12GB (3 x 4 GB or 1 x 8 and 1 x 4GB) in the 8760W (Quad core) or does this make no sense?
-
Maximized dual-channel performance requires SODIMMs of the same size and speed in both memory slots.
for a week I used 3x4GB in my 8560w, now with 4x4GB.
Haven´t tried mixing different sizes, but should be no problem - although you miss the dual-channel performance of the board. -
thanks for the fast answer

I got my order in finally - decided to take advantage of the lease deal. I ordered with only 4gbs of RAM and one 320gb drive because I plan to install 32gbs of RAM from Crucial and two Samsung 830 512gb SSD's myself.
In short, it's the quad core, i7-2860QM CPU, anti-glare DreamColor, NVIDIA Quadro 4000M, Blu-ray/DVDRW, backlit keyboard, bluetooth, Intell Ultimate-N 6300 ethernet card, 230W, 3-year Elite Support, 3-year Accidental Damage.
I'll need to order the drive caddy for the SSD, an advanced replicator port, a couple extra power supplies a couple weeks before the scheduled delivery date - I hate to order them at the same time because they ship the accessories right away and then they sit around while you wait for the computer!
Meanwhile, because I don't expect to see it until mid-or-late February, and then take a week to set it up, I wound up upgrading my HDX18 from 500gb to 750gb drives because I was out of space.
I got an email saying my order was in from leasing & sales, but I haven't got an order number yet so when I get that I'll know more about when to expect it.
It's amazing that this unit is still on long backorder after being out so long, but that happened with the HDX as well back in 20098-2009. -

Can the screens on these laptops be manually upgraded from the 1600 x 900 to the "Full HD" 1920 x 1080 resolution? Or is that something that has to be factory installed only? Also, if a screen upgrade is possible on my part, which screen would work for this laptop and where should I get it from?
Thanks in advance for any help! -

^^ You can upgrade it but that would void the warranty. According to HP the screen is not user replaceable/upgradeable. Do it at your own risk, but like I said, it is doable.

I don't have the experience and confidence to change the lid of my 8740w. Not even a local technician is willing to do (it's a very delicate work). So I'm going to send my 8740w to an official service center to swap only the lid (display enclosure, not the entire screen) due to an accident.
Compatibility-wise, screens are upgradeables without problems, even the DreamColor 2, at least on the 8x40w series. I guess the 8x60w series will support this too. -
As soon as you leave the HP frame and look for other options, there are lots of compatible panels out there that don't cost and arm and a leg but you will void the warranty and also, need to be aware of the connectors, many panels have proprietary stuff. -

Thanks for the help guys. One last question. Is there that much of a color/quality difference between the 1600 x 900 and "Full HD" 1920 x 1080 resolution of screens for this model of computer? I know that the DreamColor screen is in a whole nother stratosphere, I'm just talking about the minor upgrade from the 1600 x 900 screen to the 1920 x 1080 screen.
Thanks again guys! -
No big difference for non-IPS panels.

Got my answer. Thanks!

Still have to separately buy 32gb's of RAM, two SSD's, and the drive bracket. -
HP 8760W RESOURCES
Last updated 01-20-2011
I just finished going back through every page of this thread making a single list of resources I will need when my 8760W arrives. Maybe it might be useful to others so they don't have to go through the thread themselves. I'll edit it if anyone has anything to add. PS: This is not a driver or software update list or an advice list.
HARD DRIVE TRAY
If you order only one drive and plan to install two of your own, you will need a hard drive tray for drive bay 1 (the first bay is drive bay 0).
HP PartSurfer (this is part of HP not a 3rd party): 642774-001 Hard Drive Hardware Kit (includes hard drive bracket and screws)
List Price (USD) is $13.30 on HP Partsurfer. FYI, they charged me another 11 bucks to ship it. You can enter the part number at HP PartSurfer

CRUCIAL RAM
Here's one place to get a 16gb kit (2 8gb sticks) or get two of these for 32 gbs of RAM:

^awesome CyberBeach! but I just went through all the pages and still can't find what I'm looking for.
Can anyone confirm if an mSATA SSD (like the Intel 310) will or will not work in the mini-PCIe slot? Please don't recommend that I use a 2.5" or the OD-bay; I'm obviously trying to avoid those configurations. -
-
what's interesting is, that on the 8760w there are solder points for a 3rd mini-pcie slot visible. I'am about to order such a connector to see if that 3rd slot is good for any purpose.

BIOS update! Version F.23 is now available for you owners.

Looks like all my parts will be in by tomorrow! The computer came early actually, got the dock, extra power supplies (I like to just leave one at home, one at the office, and one in the trunk of the car), extra battery (you can charge two for travel or just have a spare for 2 years down the road when the first one inevitably dies).
I switched my spec/order from Samsung 830's to the Crucial M4's for no major reason except the Crucial has been shipping just a bit longer, and then I was able to get the SSD's and the 32gbs of RAM both shipped direct from Crucial.
Work plan:
So Saturday, I'll update the BIOS, and then I will be swapping out the easy-access RAM, then removing the keyboard to swap or place the additional extra RAM, then pulling the one included drive and replacing it with an SSD, and then sawing away at the plastic bar so I can put in another SSD.
Once all that's done, I'll install Windows 7 64 Pro or Ultimate (although I'll think about Windows 8 beta), either from the HP disks or from Microsoft Technet media, let it update, install Symantec NIS 2012, update that and let it scan, and then install VMWare. Finally I'll copy the 3 VM's I use - at 50 to 128 gb's each that will take overnight (Saturday night if I'm lucky but probably not until Sunday night).
And THEN I will load two 8gb VM's simultaneously and see how they work.
Wish me luck! -
A quick question, I guy has this HP EliteBook 8760w for sale. He said it doesn't have a serial number because he bought it refurbished. He also said it has a ATI 6700 series graphics card. Shouldn't refurbished EliteBooks have a serial number? I thought EliteBooks have ATI FirePro or nVidia Quadro graphics cards. Should I pursue this purchase or not? Thanks
-
-
Unless the price is dirt cheap, I wouldn't buy it, it might be stolen, seller-refurbished, and what else? -
I'm planning to install new SSD's to my new 8760 and then install Windows from scratch.
Which if any of the HP utilities are worth installing?
Some I see on the included drive are:
HP ProtectTools
HP Connection Manager
HP Power Assistant
Synaptics (yes)
SRS Audio Control (yes)
Intel Management and Security Status
Intel Rapid Storage Technology
Symantec NIS Trials (have this anyway)
PDF Complete Special Edition
Computrace Trial (can download this)
Roxio MYDVD
Anything else or drivers that Windows won't install by itself? -

The serial number is also kept in the BIOS. Not sure about Windows, but in Linux you display the serical number with the "dmidecode" command. Most likely there is a similar function in Windows, but if you can't find, just boot from a live CD (like a Ubuntu CD) and run this command:
sudo dmidecode | less
This line runs the command "dmidecode" under the root userid and pipes the output to the command "less", which scrolls through the output. The serial number is part of the "DMI Type 1" information block (aka System Information), about 30-40 lines from the top.
cheers,
Werner -
Has anyone updated the BIOS to F23 ?

30% discounts are pretty sweet, although the CTO models are already inflated a lot compared to the quick-ship models, so in the end they don't end up being different that much. -
